Wrong Weekend To Be There

Apparently the weekend we were staying at the Sturbridge Host there was a trailer park conference of some kind? All along the pool were vendors set up and the pool was mobbed with out of control children and teens to where my 3 wouldn't even consider walking by the area. We had stayed there in the fall before and it was nice. Our oldest is in school 45 minutes from there and so we usually spend a few weekends...but I am leery now as it is a conference centre which obviously caters to those guests. Sincerely, Lynda Cardone

Have stayed there many times over the years. Clean, comfortable, good location and reasonable rates. Have never eaten at the hotel restaurants.

Ok For The Price

We stayed here because we got a fabulous deal - very inexpensive room for 2 nights. The actual room was just okay - older and in a hallway with that was a little yucky (poor carpet and water damaged walls + ceilings). The location was fine, the parking was fine, the indoor pool was very nice if you like those (we don't happen to use them); we ate breakfast at their cafe which was fine. We wanted to use the internet in our room but that was a bust - we had major problems trying to connect and then the cost was astronomical. I would probably only stay here again if the price was too good to pass up. Certainly wasn't among my favorite places in Sturbridge but I actually did recommend it to my sister because it was cheap and she has 2 little kids who would like the pool.

Disappointed with this place

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have never written an "on-line" review of anything before, but feel strongly enough to warn people not to waste time or money on this hotel. We recently booked and received confirmation numbers for two suites through the hotel's web site and arrived to find no reservation on file. We were directed to suites which obviously had not been prepared for our arrival or cleaned for months. The rooms had apparently remained unused for some time, as a layer of dust covered everything, wallpaper was peeling and stained, the bedsheets were unmade and had hairs on them, and hundreds of tiny flies scattered from the drapes when we opened them. As an alternative, we were placed in two double rooms with less obvious housekeeping issues. The rooms in this hotel are shabby and in need of repair and the pool could use some attention ( it had a slime layer). The rooms opened onto a central indoor courtyard containing the pool, a restaurant, and the hotel bar and the noise from these areas carried directly into our room late at night . To make matters worse, the morning staff have no qualms about rattling metal carts over brick walkways in the courtyard and shouting to each other at 6 am. I have expressed my concerns and disappointment to the hotel's management but have received no acknowledgment. After staying in many hotels, motels, and inns over the years, I consider this one to be one of the worst. It is out-dated, unsanitary, and lacks quality customer service.

Avoid like the plague

Grubby, shabby, careworn, malodorous - this hotel is a disgrace to the US tourist industry. The first room we were offered - overlooking the pool - was dark and smelly. The second (allocated by the friendly and hardly surprised reception staff) was slightly better but still boasted such mod cons as torn wallpaper, stained ceiling, corroded bathroom fittings, battered beds, holed bed linen and suspicious stains around the bathroom door and walls. The whole place looks like it hasn't been maintained in 20 years. British tour operator Virgin lists the Host amongst its "superior hotels". Don't be fooled...

A Very Nice Place to Stay!

from jeanie41
We stayed while my husband was attending a Chess Tournament. We were unsure if we wanted to stay here because of the terrible reviews I read. But to our surprise it was a very nice place. The only problem was that we did book last minute and we were told it was the last room availible. Our room was fine except we did here a noise on and off all day and night that sounded as if there was air in the pipes in the walls; it sounded like an elelphant but not as loud. Overall our room was fine, clean and not a mess as other reviewers said. The pool area was very nice and a great place for kids to swim at the pool was only 5 ft. deep. We did not eat at the hotel as the prices were rather high. Again overall everything was fine except that noise. I would stay here again! If we were in another room and had booked sooner we would of been fine. I'd suggest this hotel to stay.

Stodgy, Smelly, Disrepair, Bad, just plain bad!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Well, it could have been worse. The hotel does have hot and cold running water, the roof (at least in my room) didn't leak, and the staff was pleasant enough. It's on a lake and that was OK too.

But the place is old and stodgy. The room was dusty and musty. The pictures posted by the May 3 visitor from Las Vegas were spot on.

The food was, as you might expect, also stodgy. Uninspired and expensive. Reminded me of the Williamsburg Inn down in Virginia.

Fortunately I wasn't paying it for it so I can't complain about it too much.

In short I would absolutely Not recommend that anyone stay there. The place needs an overhaul.

Smelly, Dirty, and old

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the hotel for a conference in April. It was held at this location in 2003 also - the hotel was bad then, it's worse now. The rooms are dingy, dirty, and smelly. Cobwebs in the corners, the grouting in the bathroom tile was black from mold and dirt. The bathrooms in the meeting area are disgusting - filthy, especially the mirrors. Service in the breakfast restaurant - SLOW, unfriendly, food cold. The front desk staff annoyingly overly friendly - some tall blonde actually called me "hun" when I checked in. You don't call your guests hun - my recommendation - Stay somewhere else.

Worn Out Hotel

from VegasCanuck
This hotel is a worn out motor lodge. Nothing positive to say...sorry. See photos.

A pleasant, but slightly dated hotel

from williams.pj
We booked through hotels, and got a good price.

Our mini-suite room was comfortable and clean, but in need of a lick of paint in places.

The hotel has a strange atrium / pool area, surrounded by bedrooms. This gives the reception, and much of the area a smell of chlorine.

We ate in the hotel's 1820 built "Oxhead Tavern", which offers simple pub food, but with the exception of the barman, I do not believe any of the staff know how to smile...

Tthe hotel offered discounted tickets to visit the Old Sturbridge Village, just over the road, a great insight into the life of the 19th century.

I would be happy to return here.

Easter Brunch

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family Easter brunch at the Sturbridge Host Hotel was more than we expected. The food was excellent and appealing to the eye, all the hostess and waitresses were very attentive and charming, we enjoyed a wonderful jazz band and recurring visits from the Easter Bunny who gave chocolates to our little grandchildren.
Well done, we'll be back!
One addition: one of our daughters and family went to the wrong restaurant in another town and we had to wait for their arrival. Our hostess was very understanding which left us more relaxed to enjoy the event.

Outstanding Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
Recently attended a conference at this hotel - found an extremely well trained staff, exceptional service, outstanding meeting facilities, and a good range of recreational activities. We our moving our company's business to this hotel from another local hotel because of the business services - business center and wireless internet. Excellent place to entertain clients.

Good Conference Center

I was on the planning committee for a conference held here. The staff was great to work with. I had a good experience staying here.
