Terrible service

We stayed at the Newton Marriott the last week of August, while taking stepson to college nearby.

Our first room was located on the third floor, which really meant ground level with a door overlooking the parking lot. There was a strange odor to the room, and the A/C was very cold. Despite adjusting the thermostat and even resorting to turn on the heat, the room remained very cold. We called for service, and the engineer told us to put the heat on with fan on low. He provided a long explanation why. It didn't work. After two nights of huddling under covers, we asked that the AC be fixed or we be switched to a new room. We were assured they would leave us a note when we returned on whether/not they were able to fix problem.

When we returned, no note and the room was still freezing. We called the front desk to find out what was going on. Front desk asked, "well, what do you want us to do?" So husband asked to change rooms, which they did. No apology for the inconvenience or for not getting back to us. No discount or complimentary services were offered, not that I expected that.

The second room was on the fifth floor, overlooking the parking lot. This room had a working thermostat and didn't smell. However, the beds were weird. The first room had great beds, very soft down mattress pad and big comforter. In the second room, the down mattress pad was lumpy and I could feel feathers poking at me. It actually made crunching sounds when you moved on it. Truly horrible sensation. So I actually had less sleep in the second room than in the first, substation Zero room. Defeated, we did not ask for another room change.

Restaurant was okay. Food was ok, though expensive like hotel food. Cleaniness so-so (crumbs on seat, etc.) Service pretty good. Other pluses are they have nice bath products (from Bath & Body Works) and the rooms were relatively quiet (didn't hear much hallway noise).

There are many other hotels in the area which we are going to investigate/try out when we visit stepson. For the price, the Newton Marriott is not worth it.

Vandalism and Lax Security

Drove a U-Haul truck up to Newton from DC. Was tired and happy to reach the hotel and get a bed to lay our heads on. The next morning, we woke to to find our U-haul vandalised! The side mirror was smashed (making it almost impossible to drive because trucks don't have inside mirrors), the door had been scratched up and the gas tank cap was opened up and was lying by the side of the car. We were understandably upset. we contacted the security at the hotel and the lady came and took pictures of the damage and walked off and told us her supervisor would come and assist us, but he was 'in meetings'. we waited and waited, got tired, went to our room, and waited and waited, called the fron desk 3 hours later to ask if we anything was being done..... they said we should be patient and wait. we waited and waited - 4, 5 hours -nothing. Not knowing much about cars we were afraid that if someone had put water or some other liquid into the gas tank, driving the truck might damage it or we would be putting ourselves at risk. Finally I made phone calls to U-Haul (who were just as bad in their service) and to some people i knew who knew about cars and then I gathered up my guts, said a prayer and drove the truck out of there. The security at the hotel was UNHELPFUL and USELESS. That disturbed me. Moreover, the beds were soft and give a false impression that you will sleep well.... NOT. My friend and I tossed and turned and had a generally very uncomfortable night's sleep. Sheraton beds are waaaay better. Will not be staying at that Marriott ever again, and I hope you save yourself the trouble too.

really enjoyed my stay

I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel, while attending an ICT
Conference for teachers. Staff were so helpful and friendly and nothing was
too much trouble. Bedroom was very clean, and well serviced each day.
Staff in dining room and bar were also so pleasant. The free shuttle
service to the train station, in order to travel to the city centre, was
essential and very efficient.
Thanks to all staff - would certainly recommend it to anyone going to
Boston.

Musical Chaos

I had stayed at the Boston Marriott during one of the ATAM New England Music Festivals. It was very chaotic. There were kids running all over the place and the thin walls did not help with blocking out music from my hotel room. The room itself was descent, but a little dated. After their renovations the main lobby and balloroom are looking nicer. As for the restaurant, the service was terrible. However I cut them some slack considering they have to accomodate thousands of guests that weekend. My entire stay would have been more enjoyed if the hotel had cut the number of guests allowed, so the halls were less crowded and hot.

Theft from room

While the front desk staff are friendly and the rooms comfortable, we've had various problems with theft, lost faxes, and no ability to print documents from either our laptop or their single computer. Supposedly this hotel subscribes to an online printing service, it never worked and the hotel personnel said it had been disconnected.

During one stay we changed rooms and forgot a new and expensive lounge robe in the closet. We discovered it as soon as we got into the new room, i.e., within 10' of its disappearance, but the hotel staff said they could do nothing more than ask the cleaners who were working on that floor at the time. Of course it was never seen again.

I guess the lesson is to be very careful not to leave anything behind even for 10'. If they think you've gone, anything left is also gone.

Wedding night - not impressed

I am a Marriott Gold member, from frequent business traveling, and stayed here the night of my wedding. I requested a special room for my wedding night or possibly an upgrade. Did I get a special room? Nope. An upgrade of any sort? Nope. Champagne or chocolates? Nope. What does being a Gold Member get you? What does my endless loyalty to this hotel chain get me? Not much. I also had my rehearsal dinner here. The food was horrific. I was not impressed.

t Believe The (Reno) Hype

Just returned from a one night stay at the Boston-Newton Marriott. Unfortunately, that's one night too many.

Despite some misgivings about staying at an older property, Marriott representatives provided several assurances about a "recent renovation for all the rooms." Unless dated decor, chipped paint and dinged doors are part of the new ambiance, we'd suggest the renovation bypassed the third floor. By the way, the third floor is actually a level down from the lobby and has the feel of a cave.

The much-hyped bed was ill-suited for, err, sleeping. The room was cramped. The bathroom was small with stained ceiling tiles in the shower. And the grout was stained. Adding to out discomfort was the bathroom's less than clean condition.

Bright spots? Well, the restaurant served up decent fare and the staff was very accomodating. The location was convenient to our business stops.

Definitely not worth the $200+ rate.

Odor in room

We have stayed at this hotel before and had a terrible odor (like dead rats) in the original room. We moved directly that time. This time we were put in room 323 and there was a very toxic smell and the windows did not open. We requested a room change (we are Marriott owners) and were told there was nothing until the next day. The next day we did change to room 233-has a patio which we enjoyed enormously. Lots of fresh air. We will stay again but only in a patio room. We advised reception on leaving of the problem in room 323. Only stay in a room with a patio.

The windows in the room cannot be opened. We had 4 double rooms and all of us caught a cold or flu with a nasty cough. Also the heater/air conditioner in our room did not work optimally. I think the rooms are not aired out sufficiently after each customer since the windows cannot be opened. A perfect environment for bacteria?

Typical Marriott, very comfortable

This is a typical Marriott hotel - nothing beautiful but the food and service was good and the staff was friendly. The beds are comfortable so you should not have a problem sleeping. The bathroom is very small but the toiletries are nice as are the towels. If you are doing business in the Boston suburbs, this is an ideal property.
