Love the hotel, But...

32 years ago, my husband and I had a wonderful wedding reception at the Sheraton Commander. We have started to stay there while visiting the area because of our sentimental attachment to the hotel and because it is a Starwood related hotel. This spring, we stayed there on several occasions, the latest being in June. We love this hotel. The rooms are large and comfortable, the bathrooms are lovely, and the decor is very welcoming. Without any problems, we have found the staff to be very helpful--someone even opened up the ballroom where we had celebrated our wedding just because I wanted to see it. There is a but here. Last time we stayed, there was a problem and the staff seemed unsure of what to do. I stored my wedding ring and a necklace in the drawer of the desk and left it by mistake. When we arrived home, I realized that I had left my items in that drawer and called the hotel immediately. It took 48 hours to be told that the ring and necklace were gone and could not be found. I know that my forgetfulness resulted in this loss and that hotels are not liable for loss, but I did expect a more concerned response and some admission that this happened in one of their rooms tended only by their staff. I think most of us who stay at a hotel of this level with a good reputation have some expectation that their belongings in general are safe in a locked hotel room and out of sight. This will not prevent us from staying there, but we were certainly disappointed in the hotel's handling of the situation. The police have been responsive to our concerns. It is disappointing that this could have even happened in a hotel that prides itself in guest services & safety and that there was no one able to admit that a problem exists in hotel room security. We will return again but not with the same sense of comfort and security that we enjoyed before this incident. Please watch what you bring.
