Historical Traveller Reviews of The Stowaway Grand Hotel
Grand in Every Way

We just returned from a five day stay at the Grand Hotel with our 14 and 17 year olds. To say we were satisfied is an understatement. This hotel is beautiful; perfectly situated. It's on the boardwalk but away from the hustle and bustle of the strip of souvenir shops, concession stands and amusements but within walking distance (or a short trolley ride). The view from the balcony of the beach is spectacular. Our room was quite large (enough to fit 2 Aero beds comfortably). The "kitchen" area consists of cabinets, a sink, coffee pot, microwave and small refrigerator (larger then you'd find in most beach hotels). Rooms are immaculate; furnishings more than adequate for the four of us. Having an all night pizza shop was convenient (although the pizza was not terrific). Coffee shop, gift, jewelry shops gave the hotel a "resort" feel. Hotel staff was very courteous and efficient. Asking for a light bulb, extra blankets was responded to quickly. The outdoor pool was quite nice; we didn't use the indoor pool but it was nice to know it was there. Larger pool towels would be nice. Only complaint is that they do not have menus from local restaurants to review and few suggestions for eateries. Also, coffee pot was not cleaned out. Small complaints for such a delightful time. I wouldn't stay anywhere else!
The Fire Alarm Goes Off Again at the Grand Hotel!!!
My family and I spent 3 nights at the Grand Hotel in August. This hotel is on 21st Street and at the quieter end of the Boardwalk. When we arrived the staff at the front desk was limited, so it took awhile to check in. The room was roomy with 2 queen beds, sink, small wet bar, coffee maker and microwave. They have coffee, but no tea bags, sugar or powered milk. The walls of the room were paper thin and you had no problems hearing the neighbors cell phone going off at 6 AM. The last night we stayed there it sounded as if 10 people were next door - don't they have a policy on how many to a room? You had to use 2 hands to open the deck door and you heard other deck doors 'rumble' when they opened or closed. Outside on the deck they had 2 uncomfortable chairs with no table to sit your drinks or ashtray on. The carpet in the room for a newer hotel surprised me as it needed stretched. The bathroom was average, but I was surprised for an 'upscale' hotel that it didn't have the line to dry your swimsuits on. I've been in cheaper hotels that have this! Breakfast buffet was OK for $7.95/Adults and $5.95/Children - you paid $2.50 for a small glass of milk or juice and they didn't have tomato juice! The eggs were pretty rubbery, but there was plenty of food. The indoor and outdoor pool needed cleaned. On the last night we were there the fire alarm went off at 3 AM and we had to evacuate. I see now, by other reviews, that this is a common problem at this hotel. We had to go down the stairs and wait till we were told we could go back in. Thank goodness it had stopped raining that night! When I went to check out, the girl at the front desk just said "Sorry, someone was smoking where they shouldn't have." I think overall for $259/night they should improve on alot of things and I do not plan to stay at this hotel again.
Wonderful Family vacation
We recently stayed at The Grand in Ocean City, Maryland with our two girls (6 & 8) for four days. The hotel was extremely clean (they were constantly vacuming the lobby) and was located right on the boardwalk. We spent most of our time going between the indoor pool, outdoor pool and the beach. The pools are located over the parking lot and overlook the Coastal Highway but our room had a great view of the ocean and was quite spacious. The only complaint was the airconditioning unit which was a forced air compressor and while it cooled the room quite well, it turned on and off like a "take off and landing".
The cafe was convenient but pretty expensive and there were other good souvenier/beach shops. I would stay there again if I went back.
This was our 2nd visit to the Grand Hotel...and the family loved it.
The kids loved the pool, my husband loved the pool bar. This time, not only was the coffee shop open 24 hours, but so was the boardwalk pizzeria..24 hours! My husband and I could get cocktails in the lounge while watching the kids right next door at the pizzeria. The cherry on top was the ice cream parlor was open until 2 am. All the rooms in this hotel are oceanfront, steps away from the beach. This place is more a resort than just a hotel. You won't find another oceanfront hotel that has eateries, souvenir shops, jewelry store, beauty salon, 2 bars, an all you can eat breakfast buffet, indoor and outdoor pools, and a game room located right on the famous Ocean City boardwalk.
WOW was that a fun family trip.
not a great hotel
well, the elevators had dirty glasses and garbage in them, the restaurant was terrible the service was terrible we had worms in our fruit salad
they really didn't care if you complained never would stay there again

this was not our original hotel when we made our plans to visit ocean city. our original hotel was horrible, so we found ourselves at the front desk at 8pm looking for a room for the next three nights. they were very accommodating, and we found ourselves in a very large clean room with two queen beds, a tiny kitchen and a balcony for a reasonable rate. on the last night of our stay, the fire alarm went off around 12;30 and we were all forced to leave the building. not a pleasant thing to be awakened, walk down seven flights of stairs and be outside the building for a half hour. i felt we should have been compensated in some way for this major inconvenience, but all the manager did was offer an apology. we could hear everything from the people next door, especially if they were out on their balcony. the room itself was spotless and the location was right on the beach. for that alone, i'd go back.
Not bad, could be better.
This hotel has unfortunately had it share of problems since the original Stowaway buildings were torn down. The hotel took almost 6 years to build and I am assuming that is why the hotel charges such high rates, to make up for its financial problems. The hotel is rather nice, although the balconies are not very private. I guess that is so all of the rooms can be considered oceanview, since the hotel is a semi-circular building overlooking the ocean. The indoor pool are could be nice, although it seems as if too much chlorine is added to the pool, which is hard on my eyes. The indoor pool area also did not appear to be very well maintained. The nicest thing that I have found with this hotel is the retail shops accessible from the boardwalk. I must say, however, that they charge an awful lot for a small "deesh" of ice cream in their ice cream parlor. I honesty think that if everything went as planned when building this hotel, it would be finest hotel in Ocean City. In my opinion, if you want to spend a fortune on a nice hotel room, choose the newer Holiday Inn and Suites on 17th Street. It is much better there (no problems that I am aware of) and worth the money!

just got back from five nights at the grand. found the place to be wonderful.absoltuly spectatuclar view of the ocean from our tenth floor room.just gorgeous as you open your door to enter the room and all you see is ocean! as for the balconies it was sort of wierd not being private, but im thinking they left them open like that so you could have an unobstructed view to the sides.
as far as the employees everyone was wonderful there, helpful, nice any other positive adjective throw in there.the place was spotless. this was 20 dollars cheaper a night than the quality inn boardwalk i stayed at last year and this place is 20 million times the hotel.
only advise if you like to look at people on the boardwalk be a few floors lower as the tenth is a little high for true people watching.
Would not stay again - ever!

We stayed at The Grand in June 2004 for 4 days and got two rooms adjoining with our family. We were told that since we don't have a credit card that we would have to pay cash when we arrived. My wife phoned the hotel a few days before we left and was told that we owed for both rooms $855.44 balance since we already sent $272.72 check. Now that is for 4 days Mom-Thurs. Now here is the kicker - we paid cash $427.72 per room balance at check in but when we were ready to leave they told us that we owed another $117.72 per room. We were ask for our debit card for any phone calls - we used our calling card so they really didn't need our debit card but then they said that they put the balance on my debit card. My wife told them that we don't owe any thing that we paid the balance when we arrived but they said that they made a mistake so that we needed to pay so they went ahead and used my debit card anyway without my permission. They don't take debit cards in the first place so they say - it is a felony to use someones card without permission. Be very careful when paying with cash and make sure that your recipe is correct when you enter because if there is a mistake even on their part they will make you pay and give you a hard time even when its their fault. I have never stayed in a place that is so dishonest and I have never had a problem with any other property owers in O.C and I have been going there for thirty years.
Great Place with friendly staff:)
My friend and I just returned from Ocean City after staying there for 4 nights. Our orginal intentions did not have us staying at the Grand, yet that is where we ended up. We arrived late Wednesday night, the 25th after a three hour trip from Baltimore to our original destination Harrison Hall. Needless to say we were disappointed and went on a hotel search that same night. We drove down a couple of blocks and were lucky enough to see a vacancy sign up on the Grand, so we checked it out. The hotel staff could have not been nicer. The gentleman we dealt with at the front desk not only found us a room that suited us, but he took us up to see it himself before we made a decision. That is the kind of service my friend and I were looking for.
The room was two queen beds compared to two doubles at out prior location with a superior ocean view complete with balcony. The room was imaculate and huge for two people. It also came complete with a little kitchen area that had a coffee maker, fridge and microwave. The bathroom was also a great size for two people and the shower worked extremely well. If I had one complaint it would be that more space for bathroom storage would be nice, but not extremely necessary. The price of the room was a bit more than our original place, but I think this is a true instance of you get what you pay for. My friend and I are already thinking of staying here again next year.
Top Local Tips for Ocean City
No need to even think about drinking and driving.
Ocean City has a great bus program where you can pay a minimal fee and ride the bus along the main transportation route. This is wondeful for getting to hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. without worrying about the hazards of drinking and driving. In my mind, it's a city that has actually given some thought to a serious issue.
Harrison Harborwatch Restaurant
The Raw Bar at Harrison's has the best steamed shrimp in OC
Make sure you do not get the second floor is you have young children, and you do not smoke!!
