I got to admit this hotel was great...

Last year I got a free weekend promo they were running and I decided to take the wife away for the weekend to Baltimore. Since it was a freebie I wasn't expecting much more than a typical Marriott, which is always good, but they wowed us. First of all the service was excellent; the staff was friendly and courteous; but the room was the icing on the cake. I was expecting a low floor overlooking the dumpster but we wound up getting the 17th floor, corner room, overlooking the harbor. Everything about this stay was awesome...

For the price of this place I was pretty disappointed in a lot of things. The staff was not very friendly. It was $20 a night to park. Just put that in the price so I don't even notice! Did you think I was going to walk there??!! Then when we had visitors come down for the day I asked the hotel clerk where the best place for them to park was. She said their garage was the best place at $20/ day. I said ok, what about the lot across the street? I guess it's not a public lot? She said, yes that's public, they could park there if they want for $13/day. Need I say anymore? They were more concerned with squeaking $20 bucks out then being helpful to a customer. Finally, when we went to breakfast, the buffett was $18.99. Fine if it was any good but it was far from it. My wife only wanted a bagel but had to argue with the waitress who was trying to convince her that instead of paying $5 for a bagel it really makes more sense for her to get the buffet for only $13 more???!!! The wait staff overall made me feel like I was in their way every time I tried to walk through the restaraunt. Finally, when we first arrived, the maid opened our door about 5 mintues after we got there and I had to tell her that we just checked in so we didn't need housekeeping. The saving grace was the view! Beautiful view of the harbor. We had a wonderful trip but unfortunately it was in spite of this hotel.

This is a very nice Marriott from top to bottom. Our hotel room was beautiful and we had a very nice view of the city and some of the waterfront. Requesting a room on a higher floor would be worth it. We ate at the restaurant in the hotel and it was very good. The only disappointing feature was room service. They claimed we hadn't marked a time on our breakfast card so our meal did not arrive on time. I would have preferred them being honest and saying they made a mistake. Thankfully we had time and it all worked out.

We travel to Baltimore (Inner Harbor) every other year. We enjoy the water taxi service and the wonderful restaurants. We always travel there by AmTrak - a great way to relax. We usually stay at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel but they priced themselves right out of our budget this year. So we experimented with Priceline. We received the Marriott Waterfront as our location this trip. The hotel itself is well situated. The hotel design very pleasing. Can't say enough about the view - spectacular. Staff very pleasant. Then it was time to sleep! The noise was awful. You could hear everything right to the opening and closing of the bathroom door in the adjoining suites. If your not a light sleeper this hotel is for you!

My family with 2 young boys stayed here July 23-24, 2004. Our experience was overall fabulous. We found the location worked well - with short walks to the Inner Harbor and also Little Italy restaurants. Walks to the Inner Habor via footbridges took less than 10 minutes.

The rooms are very nice/clean and the fact that the hotel is new is a big plus. Beds were comfortable and the views overlooking the harbor are spectacular. The indoor pool was good for the kids and a big veranda near the pool also afforded good views of Inner Harbor. The breakfast buffet on Sunday was a bit overpriced and next time would probably just order from the menu. We will definitely stay here again and highly recommend the hotel.

Just another Marriott, but new

I've stayed here a bunch of times, and I have to say that this hotel from the reviews I've read is completely overrated.

Why, you may ask? First, there is another Marriott property that is identical in the interior and has better service and is close to the harbor about .75 miles away.

Second, there is a Marriott Renaissance about .25 miles away which is just as nice (perhaps slightly more upscale even) and overlooks the harbor and has rates that tend to be 10-25% less than the marriott waterfront.

Now, beyond the proximity of these other properties, I've stayed here a number of times both on business and for leisure and I don't see any compelling reasons to stay.

The rooms at this Marriott are identical to any Marriott full service property in the world - this is a good thing but not for the rates they charge for their rooms. A typical weekday rate is ~$280 and a typical weekend rate is ~$220. I rarely find any promotions that make staying there over the other 2 properties worthwhile.

The hotel pool is a joke - it's literally about 12 ft by 12 ft, it's indoors, and whenever I've went there it's full of children running around unsupervised. The pool at the Renaissance is far better IMO. Parking is outrages here...$20 and you don't have a choice given there is virtually no on-street parking in the vicinity.

The views are nice, but once again they are nice from the other 2 Marriott properties nearby. No edge there.

The proximity to any of the places you may want to visit (the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Canton, Federal Hill, Ravens or Orioles stadiums) is not any more convenient either.

If there were no other Marriott properties nearby and if this hotel offered something above and beyond the ones that are literally across the street, I'd give this place higher marks.

For what you're spending, you can have a better experience at the Pier 5 hotel. You won't have a bad experience, but you're not having an experience that justify staying here (not sure why Marriott puts it as a Category 6 hotel).

Otherwise, save some money and stay at the Inner Harbor Marriott or the Harborplace Renaissance.

Our stay was over the weekend 6/11/04 to 6/13/04. The facility is very well maintained. I highly recommend a room with a harbor view. Very friendly and attentive staff. It was a pleasure to stay there.

What an excellent property. As a fellow Marriott employee, I had such wonderful conversations with the employees...and the funny part; they didn't know I also worked for the company until I mentioned it. The room was excellent appointed and the harbor view was amazing! The staff has been one of the most attentive and the AYS department deserves a pat of the back!

Great job, we'll see you again!

Had some problems...

My request for double beds was mixed up as I was greeted with "we were able to get you a king size bed," my phone had so much static I could hardly hear anything and my shower wouldn't drain. Also, the "Marriott" parking garage charges the same ($20/day) for hotel and non-hotel customers. The bed I did get was very comfortable and the hotel is located right near the water. However, check-out service was rushed and unfriendly. I would recommend checking out other hotels nearby as the location is very nice but the hotel is nothing special.

The service we received from all of the staff was impecable. The room was lovely, as was the entire hotel. This hotel sets the standard for how other hotels should treat their guests. Highly recommended.

Top Local Tips for Baltimore

Great eats in Baltimore If you are looking for a splurge dinner, go to Charleston. You will not be dissappointed. BUT, if you are looking for a budget-conscious restaurant for dinner, but don't want a crappy chain restaurant with pre-fab food and no ambiance go to the eclectic SOBO Cafe in Federal Hill. A fresh take on dishes like meatloaf (they make the best I have ever had and it is in the shape of a muffin, ie. meat muffins) and mac and cheese (this is the adult version you have been dreaming of). Plus their bottles of wine are all under $24 with a lot of great choices at the $18 price point.

Amiccis and Della Notte's Amicci's is perfect for young kids (under 10 yrs old) Cheap eats is their motto. AFterwards, go across the street and get the kids a gellatto from Vacarros. Della Notte is really wonderful for a nice (and pricey) dinner. Get a window seat and check out the traffic!

Beware OF THE WALLET EATING LOBSTERS AT OCEANAIRE Baltimore has hundreds of seafood offerings. Stay away from the "chain" establishments who that seem to overcharge for what is good but not exceptional food. Ask the locals for some of the places to get great food at non tourist prices.
