Disappointing

Let's start with the good - the staff was pleasant and responsive. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The location is pretty good.

But now the rest. This hotel bills itself as "Luxury" but it is far from. It would not even approach the standards of the worst hotels in real luxury chains like Four Seasons, Ritz, or Intercontinental. The facilities are old and worn, though they do appear to be doing some rennovations. The rooms, while clean and comfortable, and totally anonymous and undistinguished. If I didn't know better, I would say I was at some suburban Embassy Suites. The "Fitness Center" is laughable - a couple of sad old unattended machines thrown together in a grim and poorly air-conditioned room next to the elevators. The hotel does promise to have the concierge get you access to a nearby healthclub with "fuller facilities." By this, of course, they mean "facilities that are not hopelessly inadequate." The bar is uninviting and sterile looking. The glass fronts around the lobby are dirty and stained.

This is not to say that the hotel is unpleasant to stay in, it is just that it is completely unimaginable that anyone awarded it four diamonds for anything. Don't be fooled - this is not "luxury" in any real sense of the word.

Add to that the fact that the Loews chain seems to advertise itself as "pet friendly." It even has a page in the room service menu for pet snacks. This is absolutely great if you are pet owner travelling with your animal. If you are not, however, you will find youself with the odd experience of having people walking dogs all over the halls. And since the walls in this hotel are thin and noisy, and the doors do not fit the frames particularly tightly, the sound of barking dogs can be distracting late into the night.

Great experience at this accomodating hotel

We decided to stay at the Loews Annapolis because it was close to a concert we were going to at the US Naval Base. Parked in the lot behind the hotel and decided not to use the valet. Very short walk to the elevator that goes to the front desk. Upon check-in we were greeted by Erin who was very nice and super accomodating. We were told our room wasn't ready but she immediately put us into another one and called room service right away to have our ammenity changed to our new room.
I would definitely advise joining the loews first program so that you can choose from one of their many ammenities. It was nice to be able to get ready for the concert with a nice bottle of wine and some snacks.
We decided to have dinner at the hotel at the sports bar downstairs. The service there was outstanding and the bartender Allison was super nice. She definitely made us feel welcome. It was nice to know that a drive from NY to Maryland for a concert (and much more) was worth the trouble.
All in all a great experience and would recommend the Loews Annapolis to all my friends.

Nice, but not great.

Loews does some things really well. They have a nice arrival gift for Loews First members. Despite booking through Expedia, they gave us nuts and wine in our room as expected. Sometimes they do not because you are paying Expedia prices and not Loews published prices. It's still not cheap. Parking is $16 for valet, which I would recommend because if you are parking there I think it's $12 anyway. So just valet it. Internet is another $10 per day.

Hotel is within walking distance to the attractions. Very close to food (Ram's Head pub and 49 West coffee house, both good) and the Annapolis visitor center. Did not try the hotel food, but they have a bar, coffee shop, and sit down restaurant in-house.

This hotel has a nautical theme. It's OK, nothing over the top. The rooms are nicely furnished but we had some problems. The door, as in a previous review, does not shut tightly and therefore lets light and sound in. In some cases, lots of sound. We stayed Friday and Saturday nights, Saturday there was a wedding taking place. Our room looked in to the open middle of the hotel (the area in front of the ballroom) and it was a little loud with the music. I guess the music died down around 10:30 or so. The thing is, and believe me I can appreciate this, the hotel allows dogs. I have a dog, it's a nice option. But some dogs bark. And the doors don't shut tight. So you can imagine, if someone is letting their dog out after a late wedding night where the music is already going until 10:30 and the dog gets excited and starts barking, and there are people standing outside your room giving their drunken hugs goodnight, you will not sleep until they are done. The wedding decorations looked lovely though.

The other thing with the Expedia booking is the room iteself. I would have preferred a room looking outdoors. I find it disorienting not to be able to see outside from the room. But I knew the response to my question, had I gone to ask the front desk, was "You should have payed the full rate, then you would get what you wanted. Until then, you will take that room and like it." Obviously they would never say that, but I am certain the hotel was not full and despite our requested accomodations at booking, we received neither a view nor a queen bed. We got two doubles.

Valet service was pretty good, the coffee shop was out of muffins at 10:00 AM, the dogs are generally cool to see walking around (not used to that), and really we didn't have much else to worry about hotel-wise. We spent a lot of time seeing the sights. A fairly convenient place, but nothing spectacular, and not the best value, as reported previously by other reviewers.

Not great - service not noteworthy

I was not too impressed with my experience at this hotel.

Loews makes a great effort to promote their service quality, but I have a couple of concerns in this regard. First, the hotel advertises free shuttle service in Annapolis but we were told, upon inquiry, that the shuttle service is no longer available though the valet might be able to drive us to town "if they were not busy." I would request that the service not be advertised if it is not available. Second, we were there partially for business and wanted to use the gym somewhat early in the morning (around 6:00 a.m.). The door to the gym, however, was locked every morning and, on two occasions, we had to wait for the security man to open the door for us. In the process, he more or less informed us that he could only open the door if a guest was not staying next door to the gym. On both occasions, we were made to feel foolish for even asking "permission".

I was also not impressed with the facilities. The gym was cramped and limited as far as fitness equipment. The hotel rooms themselves, while clean, were not especially well lit and were very basic. The bathrooms were also not well lit and only of average quality. Insulation from hallway noise was also poor.

All in all, I would probably not return to this hotel, given the typical price range.

Uptown at the Loews Annapolis

We enjoyed a night at the Loews Hotel this Labor Day Weekend. The staff very nice and detail oriented. The hotel looks like it just opened. The look being near the harbor of course is nautical sailing motif. We had a wonderful night sleep very quiet and the bedding was very very comfortable. They give you nice treats before you go to bed. They do have a turndown service. We had a corner room which had lots of windows. The hotel to me is in a great location!!! I liked the fact that is was not in the hectic harbor. It is a 10 minute walk to the harbor but you pass lots of cute restuarants, coffee shops, pubs, stores, galleries etc... on your way there. The hotel has a parking lot and we used valet and found it to be a huge convenience worth the $16. The front desk helped us with our plans one evening did some internet searching for a movie. They are pet friendly so you occassionaly see a small pooch walking around. Dogs need vacations too! Stay here and I would actually reccommend taking in the breakfast at the hotel there is only 1 breakfast place that we found down by the harbor. We went to the Naval Academy I think next time I go I would like to attend Services there if possible I heard it was a beautiful church. The Naval Academy is interesting and you should check it out. They have a few group tours to join. All in all I feel the LOEWS is better than the Marriott if that is your other consideration for hotels.

O.K., not great

I stayed here for a wedding in early August 2005. I had never been to Annapolis before and I definitely enjoyed my time there. I agree with other reviewers that noted that this hotel is on the edge of the main town and you do have to walk by a few questionable blocks to get back to the hotel from the wharf areas.

As for the hotel itself, it seemed a little worn to me. I understand that Loews accepts pets chain-wide and it definitely showed at this hotel. I have never seen so many dogs in a hotel in my life! Don't get me wrong--I love dogs and other pets, but I think this policy leads to a property that is much harder to maintain. My room was clean, but nothing special. I was happy to not be on the interior, atrium side, as that is were part of the wedding reception I attended was located, and I'm sure the noise would have been heard in those rooms. Overall, for what I paid, the hotel does not give a great value, while I had no major complaints, nothing was very special about the property either. It just kind of reminded me of a Holiday Inn from the mid 1980s--definitely NOT a four star property.

A great place to stay in Annapolis

A great place to stay in Annapolis. This hotel lives up to its 4 star rating. The staff was extremely nice and the room was the cleanest hotel room I ever stayed in. Being a Loews First member they upgraded us to a large suite, gave us a nice bottle of wine with fresh strawberries and assorted nuts, and a free voucher for food purchases at the hotel. Every evening when we returned to our room they had the bed turned down for us and the ice bucket filled. They provide free apples to snack on through out the lobby which is a nice touch. The only negative I would have was the seal around the door which let light from the hall seep in. The light wasn’t visible from the bed and sort of acted like a night light for trips to the bathroom so I didn’t mind it. I would highly recommend Loews hotel when visiting Annapolis.

Questionable Value for your Dollar

We were not impressed. A week before our stay, I requested a room with a courtyard view, based on reviews I had read. I was told I was assigned room 457. I re-confirmed 3 hours before check-in while laying over in Atlanta. Upon check-in, was told our room was changed due to "inventory issues". Overlooked the parking lot. This could be "fine" if it were the only issue-read on. Valet and bell staff on check-in were nowhere to be seen even though the desk was "staffed". Our Loews First "Welcome Amenity" which was supposed to be waiting for us at check-in wasn't delivered until our last night after multiple and repeated requests. Room doors weren't properly sealed so bright light streamed in from the hallway. The air conditioning didn't work well-had to set it way low to make the room comfortable. When I went to take a shower the next morning, there was only lotion (?!) and conditioner in the shower-no shampoo. Hot water was slow to come on and, when it did, was inconsistent. The television didn't work. They did switch our room the second night (after I complained about all the problems) to a courtyard room but, by then, my opinion had already been set. These issues could be considered "acceptable" for a less-expensive hotel, but I was paying $158 a night (plus $16/night for parking). You could pay less and get the same or better service/amenities. In this case, we definitely did NOT get what we paid for. Look elsewhere-there are plenty of nicer places to stay in Annapolis.

Loews was great!

First time we stayed in a Loew's property. Thought it was great. Had a problem upon arrival with the location of room (faced the atrium and was noisy) but staff quickly moved us into a quieter location. Room was spacious and beds comfortable. A nice feature is the Loews First Club --- we had wine and nuts delivered to our room at no charge. Hotel is in walking distance (7-10 blocks) to all the main attractions, but shuttle service doesn't operate on weekends if you don't feel like walking. Staff were very accomodating and knew us by name. Got a good rate using AAA.

Enjoyed our stay

We transferred to Loews after spending 3 horrible nights at the Maryland Inn, talk about night and day. Pricey $209 but after paying $259 at Maryland what a deal! Would stay again with no hesitations. Only issue is the price of their bottled water in the rooms...$4 each, but I've seen it higher priced at other hotels.
Cant go wrong here.

Top Local Tips for Annapolis

McGarvey's Pub Excellent lunch fare at McGarvey's by the dock. We ate there twice and thorougly enjoyed both meals. The shrimp salad sandwich was excellent as was the pulled pork sandwich.

Loews Annapolis Hotel The Breeze restaurant is wonderful....fantasic seafood choices and delightful desserts. Also the breakfast is great, big and bountiful.

Keep an eye out I reserved a shuttle back to the airport. The shuttle driver past by the hotel because the entrance isn't on the main street. Our taxi driver almost missed it too. I would just keep a look out for taxi/shuttle to flag them down so they don't miss the hotel.
