Historical Traveller Reviews of Holiday Inn Portland by the Bay Hotel
Great Spot, Good Deal, Little Parking
My wife and I had a very good trip to Portland and this Hotel just added to the experience. You can walk to almost anywhere in the city from this location. It is all down hill from the Hotel so the walk back can be rough, but it's better than driving. Once you have a spot to park in the garage you don't want to give it up because the spots are small and there are not many of them. The location was great and the view from the bay side was excellent. The room itself was average but clean.
A good stay
Excellent location - walk to all downtown areas, nice views of the bay from large windows, free parking, free internet, and reasonable rates make hotel a good value. Average maintenance/cleanliness (bathroom ceiling had a lot of mildew, everything else was fine). I didn't try the restaurant or lounge, but the prices were also reasonable. Staff on the chilly side, but very efficient. Only real negative for me was the bed - extremely soft. Also, a mini-fridge would have been a nice touch. Would recommend to others traveling to Portland.
Nice Hotel But Needs More Parking
I stayed here with my partner for 4 nights and we had a nice clean room with a bay view. My only complaint is that on two separate occasions the staff closed the parking garage because it filled up to capacity. The hotel has an additional parking lot on Free Street located directly behind the YWCA but it was filled up as well because the Fall Out Boys were playing one night at the Cumberland Civic Center nearby. We ended up having to park our rental car across the street from Norms where we ate dinner and then had to move it back to the parking gargage the next morning. A second time the garage was closed because a conference was going on downstairs in the lobby. I really don't understand how a nice hotel of this size doesn't have enough parking for its patrons. Ridiculous. I would have given this hotel a higher rating had it not been for the parking issue.
Great deal at a great location
My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn for a Valentines Day weekend. The hotel was perfectly located! It overlooks the bay, and is next door to the Civic Center and the art museum. Short walking distance to Old Port and all the cute shops in Portland, not to mention plenty of restaurants, and a movie theater.
The hotel was very impressive on the inside. Nice, clean, elegant lobby and restaurant. The room was a good size, super clean, with no problems. We didn't use them, but there was also a good sized indoor pool, saunas, and a gym (small but efficient).
I would definitely recommend the Holiday Inn by the Bay, and we will stay there again on our next trip to Portland.
Nice hotel....cold saunas!
Hotel is like most other holiday Inns that I have stayed in, clean, nicely decorated. No complaints! The pool and gym looked excellent, and indeed they proved to be. My one complaint was about the sauna,,,or rather saunas, there is a men and a ladies and both were stone cold! I agree with saving energy, but have have never been in a cold sauna before. You can switch it on, and I am sure that a few hours it will be OK, but we did not have time for this. Is this an American thing, or have I just been unlucky with my hotel sauna choices? It seems strange for a country that uses so much energy powering oversized cars that they can't even switch on the sauna...or is just the Holiday Inn chain?
great hotel, worth a stay
What a pretty hotel with a nice staff. Great views, nice rooms for a decent price. Can't go wrong with this one.

I made the right choice in booking this hotel based on the reviews I have read in TripAdvisor. It is a great hotel, and the location is superb! The room is nice and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. My husband and I stayed here for one night and it was a great experience. We will definitely stay at this hotel again next time we are in Portland.
We enjoyed this hotel!
We had a great time at this hotel, and we would definitely stay here again the next time we're in Portland. We were only here for one night, in town for a wedding. Our room was a good size, beds were very comfortable, bathroom was cute and very clean. The room was furnished nicely and all in all quite pleasant. Front desk staff was very nice and helpful. The location was awesome, central to everthing, in walking distance to so many things. It was a decent value, not great, but acceptable. We don't generally pay $150 for a hotel room, so maybe it all depends on what you're used to. But despite that, I could easily see us staying here again, that's how nice it was.
of an update

This hotel has a great location, but it is in desparate need of an update. The bathroom was disgusting. The tiles on the wall were orange and there was mildew in between each tile. We settled for a double bed because that was the only non-smoking room available. However, the bed was more like a single and the room and hallway smelled like smoke anyway. The cleaning lady was walking up and down the hall spraying air freshener. That did not cover up the disgusting smoke smell. I would not stay here again.
Good 3* Hotel
If you go in expecting a good quality 3* hotel, you will not be disappointed.Room was basic, but very clean. We had a view of the bay, and the best part was the parking was free, and it was an easy walk to Old Port . Wireless internet was also available for free. Do not, however, have the breakfast buffet. It was the worst we have ever had-frozen and hard french toast sticks and waffles.Horrible homefries and eggs.
Top Local Tips for Portland
We went at the port and we booked a ''cruise'', arount 20$ for 2. Beautiful islands, great sailboats. We went on a little island and took a nice long walk. Really nice! We had a lunch at the local restaurant, very good local food (lobster, clams, etc.). But the water is freezing (even in August)! Nice main street (coffee shops, good restaurants). Nice to walk. Two days there and it's enough to see everything.
A great pizza !
also try the Portland Pie company for delivery Their unique pizza's are quite delicious
Looking for a fantastic restaurant
Fore Street Restaurant- excellent! Need reservations... but well worth any wait. Not for little children.
