Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Waterfront Hotel
Clean, great location, excellent service
from YankeeMomCTWe had a corner suite on the top floor. If anything, the room was too big. King bedroom, big bathroom with soaking tub and glass shower, and a separate living / dining room with fridge and microwave. A smaller, more intimate room would probably have suited us better, but we wanted the full view of the corner suite.
Service was fine. Friendly, courteous, helpful staff. The valet guys were very professional and respectful. Breakfast buffet was exceptionally good too.
The location of this hotel was ideal. We were able to walk all over Portland from there. We loved our early morning stroll on the eastern promenade, which is very near to the hotel. It's a lovely recreation path along the harbor with beautiful views all along the way.
The only thing keeping me from giving this hotel 5 stars was the heat. It might not be a problem in the other rooms, but in the suite it was very poorly designed and difficult to control. The bedroom was fine, as it had it's own heat source, but the living / dining room was big and cold. That heat blew directly at it's own thermostat, so the heat would not stay on.
Heat aside, I would definitely recommend this hotel, and can't wait to stay there again. This being the only hotel in Portland we've stayed at, we can't compare it to the others in town.
Nice Place, Nice People
from hbyerlyThe lobby and rooms are modern and very clean. Parking (valet only) is $11/day, which is actually less than the self-park lot across the street. The restaurant is small and the breakfast buffet unimpressive, but the buffet price was reasonable. The lobby bar closes very early, so don't count on that for your evening entertainment, but there's no need as there are lots of options within walking distance.
What really shone about this hotel was the staff - from the parking valets to the front desk, they were absolutely wonderful. I'd stay here again, and would go out of my way to do so if I could get a better rate.
An upscale Garden Inn
from nomade7APublic areas are very nice and classy. Our room was large, modern and sleek with pale wood furnitures. It overlooked the waterfront. I'm not sure I will pay the premium for this view next time, it is less spectacular than I expected. The bathroom was very large and spotless. Unlike many Garden Inn, the hotel's restaurant is open on evening but we had dinner in town so I can't comment. However, the breakfast was delicious. The quality of the food is above what you usually got at this type of hotel. Moreover, the breakfast was on the house due to a power shortage that morning.
We didn't experience any problem with the valet parking service!
A very nice stay but pricey.
Poor Service
from A TripAdvisor MemberSnotty Front Desk Manager
from A TripAdvisor MemberYou know I really understood - I didn't need her to explain it in a fashion as if I was 5 years old. After listening to her - getting our key and turning to go to where she pointed the lift to be I heard her turn and say to another front desk person - "Some people are so cheap"!
I was blown away - cheap cheap? Hello - I do believe the rate I just paid which with taxes and their parking fee (that I wasn't told about when I made my reservation!) was over $200 !!!!
That’s not cheap in my book - but the unprofessional manner in which she handled my entire family - well you can just say we won't be going back there.
Oh yeah and doesn't my money spent go towards her salary? Send her to Paris Hilton manner school - she needs some!
Sincerely,
Brenda C.
great location!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThis hotel is a very easy walk to all Old Port attractions, as well as to the Munjoy Hill area and the Eastern Prom. It was easy to go out for lunch and some shopping and still pop back in to use "our own" loo.
The room had a fridge and a microwave, which we found very useful. Because of this, we were able to take a doggie bag from Street and Company and enjoy the leftovers as a snack later. Also, we prefer to bring our own tipple, so we were pleased for a very big fridge in which we could store our fancy beer and vintage Champagne.
The bedroom of our suite was lovely, with a view of the water, a large closet, a big tv and a very comfy bed. The bathroom was enormous, with a tub and a separate shower. The living room had a dining area and a spacious living area, with three enormous windows, each with a view of the water.
On the 4th of July, we were able to sit in PJs in our living room and enjoy the fireworks while drinking Champagne. The fireworks were at eye level, and the room was the perfect viewing spot!
This is our second time at this hotel, and we enjoyed it so much that we will certainly come back next summer, and we may even plan a winter getaway!
I agree, except for cost
from Fitguyt wait to go back!
from Cynthia6343Every person on staff that we talked with during our stay was very friendly and helpful. I needed to have my medication delivered to the hotel during our vacation. It came three days earlier than expected. The hotel staff made sure it was refrigerated as was required. When we arrived, they immediately let me know it was there. We can't wait to go back to Portland and one of the reasons we want to go back is the Hilton Garden Inn Portland Downtown Waterfront.

Not worth the money

Fabulous Italian restaurant If you are in Portland, ME and are looking for some wonderful food at a great price, check out Ribollita on Middle Street just outside of the Old Port area. Fabulous, fresh ingredients, helpful, accomodating staff, and some of the best food we've had out in a long time. And while we both had the restaurant's signature soup (called Ribollita, and totally amazing) along with main courses and some wine, our total bill, with tip, was still well under $100 -- actually around $80.
car park view dont go
Vignola The sister restaurant of Cinque Terre is a great place for dinner. We ate at the bar and shared a pizza and tasting of olives and four of us shared two entrees. The bartender was very accommodating. He made an excellent diry martini and gave me an excellent suggestion on a glass of red wine. Service was friendly and unobtrusive. The bar seats were very comfortable. I enjoyed it even better than Cinque Terre!
