Historical Traveller Reviews of Eastland Park Hotel

Inconsistent but Interesting

from Cynergy
Stayed at the Eastland Park a couple weeks ago. Spent two nights here with my husband in what was termed a "King Parlor Suite." All things considered, it worked out very well for us. A large living room, a very large bedroom, but a teeny-tiny bathroom. This is an older hotel which I understand was recently renovated. I've seen better renovated old hotels, but they're trying. Our room was nicely decorated, although I suspect some of the recent renovation was sloppily performed. Found paint on the carpet, lumpy wallpaper, that kind of stuff. But other than the small bathroom, we were really quite comfortable. The king bed was very nice. Loved that the windows opened. Our few encounters with the staff were pleasant. Enjoyed Top of the East - the bar on the top floor. It was small, but cozy, and the view was lovely - a great way to end the evening. Can't speak to the food - we didn't dine here (too many other intriguing restaurants in Portland to try!).

Bloody awful

Initially from the foyer you think this is ok maybe nice but when you get past the weird guy playing chop sticks on the foyer piano (over and over ) and you get up stairs the lift doors open and your heart sinks it looks like the titanic there is so much piping down the corridors. The rooms are small and old fashioned but not in a nice way. The bar at the top is over priced cramped and dull and the actual town is horrid we could not get served alcoholic drinks because we "dont have maine ID " funny as we are tourists??!! Oh and dont bother whale watching its a con. But apart from that we loved it ...not

T STAY HERE - THIS HOTEL IS A CURSED DUMP!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at the Eastland Park hotel twice this summer and both times were a COMPLETE DISASTER. For the first stay, my husband had booked a $220 room for myself and two of my girlfriends for a fun night out of the city. When we arrived we were given what seemed to be a run down apartment with mismatched furniture, no sheet on the box spring, an old dingy pull out couch, a closet with one hanger and styrofoam debris in it and a bathroom disgusting enough that none of us decided to shower during our overnight stay in Maine. At one point we locked our key in the room and waited 30 minutes for the front desk attendant and engineer to tell us that there "wasn't another key to the room". WHAT!?! While we waited people exited other rooms on the floor with laundry baskets - what was this floor, you ask? I have no idea...
We went to dinner and upon our return the front desk had the original key - which basically means that they ahd to break into the room to retrieve it. After this terrible expereience I complained to the manager and was promised a complimentary one night's stay in a conierge level room at the hotel. My husband and I just went for that stay this past weekend. Shortly before we arrived there was a torrential rain storm in the area. When we walked into the lobby there was a veritable waterfall of a leak directly in the middle of the space that people were frantically trying to control. No one mentioned the leak and we were given our room key. The supposed "best room in the house - where we book our honeymooners" was a fairly standard room, nothing fancy. Once we had begun settling in we realized that there was a leak in our room as well. We went downstairs and requested another room, which is when we realized that there were numerous other leaks in the hallway and the stairwell. We were given a key to our next room which, upon our arrival, was in the midst of being cleaned(!?!). By this time, we were both livid and told the front desk staff that we were going out for a walk and when we returned we wanted a room that was clean and without leaks. When we finally did get a room, it was probably the best room in the hotel, but the one window you could open actually came off (and this is 12 stories up with no screen!!) and all of the windows leaked! It was not bad enough for us to have the energy to complain again and, in their defense, they did send up a cheese basket, a half bottle of wine and some drink tickets. However, all in all this was a complete disaster of a hotel and given the fact that they claim to have just spent millions on a renovation - totally inexcusable. There are other nice hotels in the downtown area of Portland. Don't stay at the Eastland Park!!!

The Eastland Park is a fine old place

from A TripAdvisor Member
Recently stayed at the Eastland Park on the top floor and found the rooms to be very large and the views quite nice. Our room was very clean although a bit shabby in areas (some smallish cracking in the ceiling, globs of glue that had dried on the wallpaper, carpet had some spots) but not offensively so. Keep in mind that the hotel is an older property and some of the old fixtures remain in place (such as radiator grates) - this is not a brand new hotel.

The bedding was always fresh as were the towels - housekeeping was excellent. The bathroom was a nice size and gleamed in 2 colors of granite. In room newspaper, coffee, tea, bottled water, & evening turn down service were nice extras. For less than $90 a night you cannot beat the room and it can be considered above average.

Location was more than fair with the waterfront being a slow 15 minute stroll at most.

Staff was friendly overall and although many events were held over the weekend (conference, wedding, showers, etc) they appeared not to be overwhelmed and able to cater to all of their guests when approached. The only major drawback to the hotel was that the renovations taking place (still) left only 2 elevators working and some of the hallways smelling less than pleasant. The Eastland Park needs to focus on consistancy.

The Top of the East is a must for any guest - just for one drink overlooking this small city.

Great place - takes pets too!

This place is a decent hotel. Rooms are clean, they allow pets which is nice for a city hotel and it's in a great area walking distance to the Old Port. I booked my ----------------------------------------on EZTrip. They have a really nice site. Mike

t stay here!

I got married March 13 in Portland and was looking for a really nice hotel to recommend to my guests. I read the Eastland Park Hotel's web site and thought this would be the perfect place. I couldn't have been more disappointed. When I spoke to the reservation manager she suggested the honeymoon package for the bride and groom, which included a deluxe room~with a nice sitting area, 2 free drinks each for the bride and groom, breakfast in bed, and valet service. All this for $159. I reserved that room and was told the rest of my guests would receive their lowest available rate, which was the online booking price of $79. I told her I would need 12-15 rooms. The first problem I encountered was that some of my guests could not book online because that rate had limited rooms, the rest of my guests had to pay varied rates of $89-109 depending on who answered the phone when they called to reserve. When my guests arrived there was no rhyme or reason to who recieved what room or why. Some who had paid $79 received "deluxe rooms" and some received below standard rooms for $99 and vice-a-versa, and there was never any mention of the $10 parking fee for staying at their hotel. The parking lot was a block away which on a windy cold Maine afternoon was too difficult to walk, with luggage, for some of my elderly guests who then were charged $17 for valet service. When I first got to the hotel with my older children I was met with the next problem, I was given a room with one bed for 3 adult children after I had months ago made it clear what I would need. I called the desk to explain the delemna and I was told that unfortunately all their double rooms were booked and there was nothing they could do. I was very upset and the wedding was only a couple of hours away so I complained that they absolutely had to change the room and somehow they managed to do just that. (I wonder how the other party whose room was given to us felt). The honeymoon room turned out to be the very same type room my children were first given. It did not have a sitting area and it was dark and dingy with a very outdated bath, nothing like I had been told when I made the reservation!! When I was headed out for the wedding ceremony I waited 30 minutes for my car and was told it would be 10 minutes at the most. Finally, when I added up the cost of my room I actually ended up paying much more than if I had purchased all the specials in the package seperately. The 2 complimentary drinks each for the bride and groom were just two $10 coupons good in the lounge, where there is not a drink less than $8, so in reality we had only one drink each. (and they did not have live jazz entertainment on the weekend I was there, as they have advertised). The breakfast was the one thing that was good, and the girl who brought it was very pleasant. I think the problem at the Eastland Park Hotel is basicly poor management and untrained personel. The owners are probably not aware of the major issues here. I would absolutely not recommend this hotel to anyone and I would certainly stay away if you are having a special event.

the allure of the chandelier

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at the Eastland Park three times now and am rather pleased. The location is drop-dead groovy. The art museum is just across the street, there's a parking garage right next door, and Old Port, even for an old fogey like me, is a ten-minute walk. For breakfast, I recommend the corn-meal johnny cakes on the menu rather than the deadly-generic-looking breakfast buffet. The rooms lack character but everything works, and nothing is frayed or tawdry looking. On the rooftop lounge, some windows have great views. Everyone on the staff seemed to display intelligence. When I asked questions, no one looked at me mindlessly. This is always encouraging. And there's that nice chandelier in the lobby . . .

Wonderful with a bit of history

Wonderful, friendly staff in an old, well preserved hotel in Portland.
The price was great, the accommodations excellent, clean, and much larger than traditional hotels. The restaurant served large, well prepared meals and the presentation was beautiful. I ate one of the best steaks I have ever had. Hot food, well prepared and affordable. I would stay there again in a flash!

A wonderful romantic weekend!

After visiting the Eastland Park Hotel, I can't imagine how anyone could have a bad time. Upon arrival, we were greeted cheerfully by the bellman. Check-in was easy and pleasant. Our room on the concierge level was beautiful, and huge. The bed was comfortable, and everything was very clean with nice furnishings. Our view was very pretty, city views with water in the background. The location is central, an easy, short walk to the old port, art galleries, and many other sights.
Parking next door was $10, and was easy and safe. We did not eat in the restaurant, but the bar upstairs was beautiful: 360 degree views of portland. It is really romantic and the staff is excellent. We did have continental breakfast, which was conveniently right downstairs, and you can even take it to go. The front desk staff was wonderfully helpful, recommending restaurants, nightlife, and giving us directions. The front desk manager Jeremy made our stay extra special through his attention to detail and pleasant personality.

We had a wonderful time and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
Portland is alot of fun, a small city with real new england feel. I urge anyone that is considering staying here to ignore the bad reviews and give it a shot.

Should be called Hotel California

A disaster. As one poster said, a 2 room suite at $79 isn't bad.
However, we paid a negotiated group rate of $159 single room that was so small we had to move the desk chair out of the way to get to the bed. The bathroom door almost hit our knees. What did we get for the extra money? Concierge level, with a permanently locked concierge lounge (because of 9/11 they told us!) After many conflicting answers we finally got continental breakfast tickets (for the lobby, not the concierge lounge) and drink coupons for the bar, which were supposedly included in the room rate. Or not. We could never figure it out.
Concierge level had no ice machine or concierge. As a concession, they did allow us to use the business center off the lobby, a large bare room which contained two chairs and one computer being used by the formerly-invisible bell hop. We evicted him, and printed out the TripAdvisor "Don't Stay Here" post to share with our friends who laughed all the way through it. We recommend staying at the Eagles Hotel California before you try this place.

Top Local Tips for Portland

Priceline If you're not picky about where you stay in a particular city, try Priceline. Always start your price low.

Public Market For those wishing to visit the public market while in Portland, it is no longer open, which was quite a disappointment when we tried to visit there. Also, a lot of the small "mom and pop" shops seem to be going out of business in the downtown area.

Portland is a restaurant town There are many well-known and pricey restaurants in Portland that you might want to try, but you might just as well avoid those in favor of the countless hole-in-the-wall bistros that are serving innovative fare at non-tourist prices. Definitely don't miss the seafood in Portland. Try the fantastic fresh bay scallops (the size of small hamburgers!). Maybe even pack some in ice to take home.
