Top Local Tips for New Orleans
Don't forget your hair care products!! If you are an african-american especially female, do not forget your hair care products and expect to purchase any from the local RiteAid because you will be completely surprised to find out that they are probably the only place in America that do not carry any of our products. I'm amazed at it being 2007 and we are still ot accepted in society. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rock and Bowl at the Mid City Lanes on Carrollton Ave. Close to Metairie Even if you don't dance, consider going to Rock and Bowl on Thursdays for Zydeco Night to listen to great music, enjoy watching the excellent local dancers, and experience the unique ambiance of Mid City Lanes. It's about half way between Metairie and downtown New Orleans. You'll have to walk up some steep stairs that can be a barrier to those with health problems ( a la "Shultze Gets the Blues")but ladies, this is a safe place to go by yourself, at least on Zydeco and Cajun dance nights. Can't speak to the others. Dancers don't drink much except for water (there is a bar with reasonable prices, though), the gentlemen are exactly that, and please remember that in New Orleans, being called Darlin' or Cher doesn't mean somebody is getting fresh or being condescending. Children can come, too. I saw one guy teaching his 6 or 7 year old son to dance--what a delightful treat! If you enjoy SW LA culture, you'll be in 7th heaven, or at least close to the 7th lane adjoining the dance floor.
Stay in Metairie? If you 1) want some distance form the quarter craziness (noise) yet still want to be a short ride (7 minutes by car) to downtown, and you want to pay a fraction of the price, metairie -- the primary NOLA burb -- may be the right decision for you.
