The Big Sleazy

The hotel was fine - good location, quiet, clean, comfortable, great free buffet breakfast. However, there's an unavoidable 6$ or 7$ daily charge for safe, local calls and internet connection, none of which I wanted or used. Having made and paid for the booking online, it was out of the question to walk away in protest. I only discovered this sleazy charge once I reached my room and found a card explaining it. It's certainly left a bad after-taste from my stay.

My girlfriend and I recently stayed at the Cotton Exchange Hotel in New Orleans. We weren’t disappointed in the location, which was quite good or the room, which was very small but nice, but we were disappointed in the hotel itself and the way its guests are nickel-and-dimed to death. We booked the Cotton Exchange on a travel web site based on its location and customer reviews, but nowhere was it mentioned that the only parking available at the hotel was valet parking at $17.95 per night or that you are charged $4.95 for a safe and $2.95 for Internet access, whether or not you use them. Our room had an excellent view of the hotel across the street, and that’s probably where we’ll stay if we ever go to New Orleans again. BTW, the parking fee applies to the Holiday Inn Express next door, too -- they seem to share some so-called “amenities” and personnel. The pool is about the size of a bathtub, the one working elevator is slower than Christmas, even though the hotel isn’t very large and I’ve never stayed in a hotel that was this noisy before. I could hear banging and jumping and kids stomping and yelling through the halls at all hours, and I could even hear normal conversations from down the hall. I will never, ever stay in this hotel again.

Stay away from this place!

We stayed here during the Sugar Bowl. An additional $7/d chg for a phone we didn't use was added to bill. They have 5X7 sign posted on the far left of their check in that tells you this! After the Sugar Bowl we had no towels and no hot water. At 7am the next morning, their staff was yelling the LSU chant and waking us and calling our room saying "Tiger Bait" when our check out wasn't until 1PM. They allowed their staff to be totally unprofessional and I'm telling everyone I know who is even thinking of staying in N.O. to stay away from this place!

Top Local Tips for New Orleans

Mardi Gras is great for kids Everyone thought we were crazy bringing our baby to Mardi Gras but were we ever glad we did! It's a great time for kids... the parades, the music, the dancing...etc. We came back home with tons of souvenir beads and toys which were thrown out to us during the parades just because we had a child with us. So don't believe the myths about only drunken, hedonistic adventures during Mardi Gras. It can actually be good clean fun too!
