Historical Traveller Reviews of Chateau Hotel

best location in the quarter

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at the Chateau many times through the years and have enjoyed the atmosphere, the location, the parking convenience, the security, the timely breakfast and the staff !!!!! You can't expect absolute perfection...It's the French quarter...If you want a modern hotel go to the other side of town!!!! what you will gain is sterility and what you will miss is character!!!!

Great location and very friendly staff

from dcmhoney
Spent 5 nights at the Chateau Hotel and enjoyed free parking, newspaper and breakfast served promptly and politely every morning. Location was terrific for seeing the French Quarter with great help from staff and front desk with maps and suggestions for dining. Ronald and Cheryl particularly friendly to us. Rooms are small and quaint and courtyard very nice. I would return for a stay but request a room off the street. We were on Chartres and the trucks in the morning start rumbling quite early however the evenings were fairly quiet.... Also would be nice to have access to a computer.

Loved this quaint little hotel...

Very Rude Staff, Worn Furnishings, Damp, Musty, Avoid

from A TripAdvisor Member
This "quaint" motel has alot of problems. First of all, it has a very unfriendly staff. Making a reservation was basically like pulling teeth. The staff member on the phone was very unpleasant and it sounded as if I was bothering him. This is not the norm for customer service in the French Quarter. Upon arriving to the hotel, the service was very "cold" in nature once again. The only perk was the free parking. The room was small and had peeling wallpaper and paint everywhere. The furnishings were in need of replacement and the sheets are well worn. The shower in the bathroom was tiny and I had to basically squeeze into it. I understand that this motel is very old and was once a slave quarter, but it is terrible need of some type of renovation. The carpeting is dirty and the doors/locks are not secure. I would recommend staying elsewhere if possible.

Good value

My wife and I spent 4 nights at the Chateau Motor Hotel and were quite pleased with the location, friendly and proactive service and cleanliness, our only complaint was the inadequate lighting in the room.

Loved the Little Creole Cottage

from LynnP45789
Just returned from a five night stay at the Chateau Hotel. I was told at the time that I made the last minute reservation that I might get a room with no window. When we arrived, we got room 242 which is in a small creole cottage that is part of the hotel complex. It had cute little french doors that opened directly onto St. Phillip Street. It also did have a window. The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to help (especially Windell, the bellman). The only complaints I had were that the walls were thin in our little cottage and you could hear lots of street noise occasionally. Even with the noise, we believe the Chateau is a great value and plan on staying there again next year.

Quaint, great location

Two blocks from everything you need to see! Clean hotel with quaint garden and pool area. If you're looking for a good value and great location, this is it. If your looking for luxury or "brand new", this is not what you want. However, we enjoyed our stay. The staff was friendly and helpful with directions and recommending restaurants. I would reccomend the Chateau Hotel to my "less-snooty" friends, looking for a good deal.

A wonderful stay in New Orleans

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent 2 wonderful night at the Chateau Hotel in July 2004. We found it a charming and wonderful experience. Our room was on the top floor of the far back building in the courtyard overlooking the pool. It was not a very large room, but everything was fine. We enjoyed the private feeling of being away from the street noise, almost like another world inside of New Orleans. It is so humid in New Orleans in the summer and everything tends to be a little musty, but the air conditioner in our room helped. The shower did take awhile to warm up -- but it was a minor thing to us. We enjoyed the lovely courtyard pool area in the evening and also for breakfast. The porter and maids were very friendly and helpful. Our only complaint was the very rude woman working at the desk when we arrived. We made sure to avoid her. Everyone else went out of their way to be friendly. The other great thing about this place is the location. So many fun things to see and do are only a couple of blocks away. We would love to stay here again!

We were lucky

from fortunatetraveler
When we found the Chateau Hotel listing in the AAA Motel Guide, it sounded too good to be true (location, free off street parking, breakfast and morning paper, description, rate). We also booked late and were unaware of the Jazz Fest occurring during our stay. After we booked, I was somewhat dismayed to read the negative reviews listed on this site, especially from people who had gone there routinely and were disappointed recently. We spent two nights there (April 27, 28, 2004).
I was in e-mail contact with the hotel beforehand and expressed my trepidation that we might be placed in a room without a window. When we arrived, we were given Room 221 which must be one of the nicest rooms. It is the corner room over the lobby so we had the balcony and the view overlooking the street. The room was well maintained and the housekeeping staff were pleasant. Sharon during the day and the evening lady at the desk were very helpful in suggesting eating locations and identifying areas on the maps. It is an ideal location in the Quarter. We did try the breakfast in the courtyard one morning, but quickly decided a fuller breakfast in one of the nearby restaurants was more to our liking. Obviously, the room location was a major part of our satisfaction with the Chateau. We would stay there again if assigned to the same room.

Comfortable, great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel has a top-notch location, out of the crowds but close to attractions. Bonus - there is a sweet courtyard and pool, welcome on hot, steamy days. The building is very old and some parts are rundown, but it is clean and staff are obliging. It reminded me of pensions in Europe. My room included a bistro table and chairs on a balcony overlooking Chartres Street. My only concern were the flimsy doors and locks, however the hotel is staffed 24-hours and I haven't heard of any break-ins.

Top Local Tips for New Orleans

Irene's She's still my favorite place ot eat in Nola. Best part is she's a door away from The Chateau. The rosemary garlic chicken is to die for as is the veal marsala.

Things to do in New Orleans There are so many things to do in New Orleans.Wonderful tours. We went on the Natchez Queen, City tours, swamp tours, Katrina tours. Also there are so many good places to eat and shop. Its also fun to just watch the people on Jackson Square.

breakfast... bands.... charles.... we didn't partake of the continental breakfast as we walked to cafe du monde and enjoyed coffee and beignets. if you go to cdm, try and get an english speaking waitperson. we got there about 9 am on a rainy sunday and quickly got a seat. a half-hour later it was sunny and the line to enter was a block long! there was only one real jazz band on bourbon street at the jazz bar - that is the real reason bourbon street became so popular. the rest of the bands were rock and roll or canned top pop forty songs. the jazz band was amazing and so talented! we drove down st charles street and saw the old antebellum homes - some are amazingly beaitiful with such stately and ornatenessity.
