The room I had looked as though it used to be a storage area previously. The hotel had a mould smell to it. It did not smell or look clean. I spent 5 nights there, the linen was changed the last night, I assume because I happened to have been in the room when the house keeper came by. The massage was very nice! I did not feel as though employees were there to help me! For example, I was there 6 days, I caught a taxi every evening to go to bourbon street, not one time did someone say "you could take the trolley and you will be within walking distances. The maids sat in my room and talked about "frequent flyer" visitors and their habitus/personal desires/encounters. I will never go back and certainly will never encourage any else to stay there.

I stayed at the Avenue Plaza just before it undertook a remodeling a few years ago, which prompted a major increase in its room rates. Neither a great hotel nor a dump. Won't make you say "Wow!" Then again, who comes to New Orleans to stay in their hotel?
One of the Avenue Plaza's best features is its presence on St. Charles Avenue at the upper end of the Garden District, one of the most beautiful urban settings in the world. From there, it's a short streetcar ride to downtown and the French Quarter, or to Audubon Park in the opposite in direction. It's also on the same block with a coin laundry, which means you can travel with a lot less clothes, which means you can pack a lot less. The first time you can pack everything you need for a one- or a two-week trip into a single CARRY-ON bag, you'll know why I look for laundries when I travel.
The other advantage is that rooms at the Avenue PLaza come with a kitchenette, complete with microwave oven and a full-sized refrigerator. Being able to cook some of your own meals, and safely eat off the leftovers of some of those sinfully good New Orleans dinners, will save you much money on food costs. And if you're there in mid-summer, keeping a fridge full of ice and cold drinks can be a lifesaver.
The one big disadvantage, if you have your own car, is parking -- or rather, the lack of it. If you park on your own, it won't be easy. If you use the hotel's valet parking, it won't be cheap. But that's pretty much the story anywhere along St. Charles.
Also, light sleepers should ask for a room away from St. Charles, unless you want to listen to the metallic rattle of streetcars most of the night.
WARNING: For security reasons, if you do choose to park on your own, DO NOT park more than one block north of St. Charles, EVER.
