This hotel was so nice! We actually spent a day just hanging out here, even though we didn't have much time. All the attractions are just a tramride away, and there are great restaurants in the area, so the location is superb. The wellkept old building is beautiful and the rooms are spacious and clean. Service: impeccable.

Great Service

Loved the place, The service was great and the room was comfortable and clean. They have a real winner with Karissa Caldcleugh as the manager.

Great New Orleans stay, with very reasonable rates for this city...Safe, Great location--street car stops 50 feet from the door, $1.25 or so will get you to the F.Quarter or down to Loyola/Tulane campuses and Audobon Park. Free internet access computer in Guest Lounge. Rooms are typically sized (not huge) for building that has been converted from a residence, but I think that all have private bathrooms, basic cable TV (N.O. local TV/news is definitely second tier) & direct dial phones, and are very clean and well kept. They offer garage parking (around the corner) for $10/nite, but there's plenty of street parking on St. Charles, (lots of all night traffic for security; meters stop eating your money around 6pm...would NOT advise street parking behind hotel, as New Orleans is very hit-and-miss with their neighborhoods...), where I've always parked my rental car. Free continental breakfast, with coffee and tea available 24/7. A cross between a quaint B&B and a traditional hotel, this has become my N.O.
"regular stay" hotel. There are probably cheaper B&B's that are run down or in a scary part of town, or more delux B&B's & new hotels in NO for $50+ more per nite, but this one's a good combination of everything you'll probably need for a fair price. Who stay's in their room in N.O., anyway?!?

ll be Back.

A delightful place with nice people. We frequently travel to New Orleans for business in the Garden District and have stayed an a number of higher-priced hotels. This one will become a regular home-away-from-home for us. The bed was very comfortable. The room smallish, but charming. Everything very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. After a long day working, it was wonderful to sit and relax on the balcony overlooking St. Charles Avenue with cool refreshment. Three points: Parking is at a premium, so park in their garage if you can. Emeril's Delmonico is two blocks down the street.
It's a restaurant well worth going to if you like excellent gourmet food...but be aware of yourself when walking back. Those two blocks were a bit rough a night. The St. Charles Tavern just down the street is a neighborhood pub and gathering spot. Grubby, but full of character and genuinely nice folks. We have breakfast there regularly. (The Garden District Hotel has continental breakfast too.) We highly recommend this hotel.

The most comfortable bed...and much more!

My husband and I stayed here December 1-5, 2003 and really enjoyed our stay here. The room we had was so clean and cozy. Freshly done each day. A nice continental breakfast each morning and a nice patio to sit out in. It was small and homey and we really enjoyed staying here, Conveniently on the streetcar line. I have nothing bad to say except it was offered free parking, but after we checked in they asked for 10 dollars a day. But when I told them my booking said free parking they gave it to me immediately. I would definitely stay here again if I went to New Orleans. A great value all around, I highly recommend!

very pleased!!!

I just returned from a trip to New Orleans staying at this hotel. The staff is very friendly and efficient. Karissa was wonderful about securing us a room that would suit us best. My mother and I both walk with canes and needed convenient first floor rooms. The free continental breakfast is pretty much the norm. Loved the free internet!!! The hotel was clean, comfortable and convenient to the streetcar (in front of the hotel). There are numerous eateries nearby including Emeril Lagasse's Delmonico and the St. Charles Tavern (24 hours a day and good!). I would stay again anytime.

Not the Greatest

For the price, the hotel was fine. There was the noise element from people coming in and out of the hotel as we were at the front of the hotel. I would recommend a room out back. Also, our room was dusty and there were stains on the wall. We had to request toilet paper as we were only equipped with one roll and I thought this was odd. The daytime attendant at the front desk was pretty unfriendly and not very helpful at all. However, the night manager, a young man, was extremely helpful and was always happy to assist us. I don't think I would stay here again.

loved this place

We were traveling on a budget - so were concerned about the quality of the hotel - but there was no need. This place was great. I'd recommend it to anyone. The staff was friendly. The place was nice and clean. I have to say, when I walked in and there was no lobby, just a hallway, I was worried. But the hoel was cozy and we couldn't have asked for anything better.

Small, Friendly Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Quaint, small hotel but not for someone looking for opulence. The staff is very helpful and friendly. We had no problems parking the car on the street, but be advised that the area other than the main street surrounding the hotel is not good at all. If you stay on St. Charles and ride the streetcar you should be fine. The room was decently sized, clean, and had a comfortable bed. There was a shower but no tub. All in all, for the price, I thought it was a great bargain and we enjoyed our stay. The location is excellent - midway between the Garden District and the French Quarter.

I have lived in New Orleans for over ten years and I have seen many of the hotels that this city has to offer. I have stayed in the fanciest of the fancy hotels and those hotels with the most localized New Orleans style. Nevertheless, I have never stayed in one that has compared to The Avenue Garden! It was cozy and sweet, as if I were curling up in my own bed at home. Yet I could see and feel the local New Orleans culture pulsate within the walls, as if it were alive. You can hear the jazz, feel the voodoo, and taste the old absinthe just by sitting in the French Quarter-style courtyard. The staff constituted some of the nicest people I have ever met (thanks again, Carissa!). The owner, Mr. Carimi, was not only devilishly handsome, but he was a true gentlman in every aspect. I'm ecstatic that an establishment like this stands in the city that I call home... a city that I am proud to call home.

I'm not sure if everyone else that wrote a review stayed at the same place as I did, because I have NO complaints! This was the best vacation my husband and I ever took! The hotel was beautiful and charming, the staff could not have been nicer and all of the accomodations were more than we expected. Housekeeping was excellent about keeping up with our room. I thought it was very clean and well kept. The location couldn't have been better! Not only is the hotel right on the Street Car line, making transportation to the French Quarter effortless, but it is also surrounded by great places to dine and drink. We parked our car right on the side of the hotel and had absolutely no problems with it. They even have a computer that is FREE for guest use, internet and all. We enjoyed our complimentary breakfast every morning in their lovely courtyard surrounded by handpainted mural of New Orleans life. Our room was well furnished and spacious. We could not have been happier with our stay at this hotel, we recommend it to everyone!!

Top Local Tips for New Orleans

check venues We went looking for old jazz and blues clubs, expecting to find this easily in New Orleans. Since the hurricane, it appears this part of the New Orleans culture has had a difficult time returning. We could not find a jazz or blues club playing while we were just wandering the first two nights unless we wanted to pay a $20.00+ cover charge). Last day there we used a travel brochure and called around. Half of the jazz clubs were not open on that day and only 2 of the 10 we called had shows for that night (and this was a 3 day weekend). Wish we would have done that on the first day and saved a lot of lost time and walking. We ended up at Donna's Pub on N. Rampart and had a FANTASTIC time!

Where to eat Definately et at the VooDoo BBQ next to the hotel! Yummy!
