Royal Mile pub A short walk from the hotel is the Royal Mile pub. I looked it up on CitySearch and several reviewers were English ex-pats who said the food their was the best they've had since Jolly Old England. They weren't joking! I'm not much on beer though I did try an Irish Cream Ale which wasn't bad. But their beer and cheddar soup was warming to the bones on that rainy night and their steak and ale pie was filled with the juiciest sirloin. I wish we had stayed in town long enough to lunch there the next day; they had chicken and leek pasties! The only caution: many pubs in the UK are family friendly and this place was rated as such but we disagreed. Perhaps if one was out on the patio but the interior is definitely not family friendly. We did take out.

various tips Skywalks in Des Moines are great. You can get to a lot of events and businesses on the skywalk system. This is best when it is 100 degrees outside (f) and when it is -100 degrees (f) outside! Parking in city garages is reasonable, but ask the hotels for deals and the best place to park for their particular hotel. Hotel choices are slim in downtown Des Moines. The Savery, Marriott, Comfort Inn, Suites on 800 and the Embassy Suites are the only games in town. As a result, they own the market and charge accordingly. Do your homework and find the best price online before you book. There are deals to be had out there. Going the State Fair in the summer is a MUST! Stay downtown and take two or three days for the fair. It is AMAZING. It is a unique bit of Americana at its best. Stay at the hotel and take the city buses that go to the fair on a regular schedule.
