Charming and Refreshing!

from Hosanna97
What a charming and refreshing hotel! Had we more time, we would have stayed several nights just to see the various themed rooms/suites that are done pullman style, for you train lovers!

Staff was friendly and accommodating, room was clean, comfy, with plush bedding and amenities thoughtfully included for your comfort (eye mask, soothing sleep CD, plush pillows . . . .

Loved the lobby and the station - still a working railroad station, by the way!

Very nice hotel!

We just stayed a night at the Indianapolis Crowne Plaza Hotel at Union Station. I highly recommend a train car room or else you won't have anything with a window to the outside. I'm sure I wouldn't have liked the hotel so much if we were in another room. Upon check-in, I told the staff I saw a cheaper rate online ($30 cheaper), so she gave me the cheaper rate without question. The pool situation is a little odd with it being on the end of the center of the first floor - in the open, but it was nice to have a pool. We also received soothing lavendar spray, ear plugs and a cd to keep. Overall, we loved the atmosphere and proximity to the Circle Center Mall.

Nice getaway

I arrived at the Crowne Plaza for a conference, not really expecting anything but a bed away from home. What a wonderful surprise! Union Station itself was unique and intriguing, with white-cast statuettes of folks from the 1800's strategically placed throughout the hotel common areas. The pullman train on the second floor has me wanting to come back to in stay one of those rooms, also. My room was spacious, clean and quite a relief. The relaxation CD was a nice added-touch, also. Most desirable was the location; this hotel is in close proximity to shopping, nice restaurants, and bars. I will be back soon, with my husband.

Nice place for a professional conference

from tigerb
I recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza Union Station for a professional conference and was very happy overall with the hotel. Pros and cons:

Pros:
Catered food was very good in general for our function.
Extremely nice and friendly staff.
Comfortable beds and pristine bathrooms.
CD player at bedside a really nice touch.
Walking distance to an interesting mall and many food choices.

Cons:
Only problem with catered food was "continental" breakfast: a pile of pastries with juice and coffee. Not even very good pastries.
Conference rooms were set up with doors BEHIND the speakers! Very odd!
Rumbling trains didn't wake me up, but it did take me a bit to get used to them.
Giant charges for parking -- your choice of $20 valet or $18 in a ramp. Maybe this is par for a city of 800,000, I don't know.

In general I would recommend the hotel for a stay and would stay there again.

t wait to go back!

My husband and I recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza for our anniversary. This is sure to be one of my favorite hotels ever. The decor is unusual and fun. Pullman's Lounge was an incredible on site restaurant. Everyone was helpful and efficient makin our stay very enjoyable. In fact we are going back in September to take our daughter for a stay on a Pullman train car. If you get a chance this is definatley the place to stay.

Suited my needs

I landed the Crowne Plaza on Priceline- so I definitely can't complain about what I paid... I had a room overlooking the swimming pool, with no outside window. It sounds like from all of these reviews that that is how most of the rooms are. I'm not sure why I got the sleeping mask since the room is as dark as midnight all the time! The room itself was nice, basic, with a small fridge. I would take the chance on Priceline again for this 3.5 star hotel. Breakfast room service was good and prompt.

Decent, but far from great.

We live in Indianapolis, but decided to stay downtown for a night so we could soak up some nightlife without worrying about getting home. The Crowne Plaza, situated in what used to be Union Station, was reasonably priced and about as close to our planned destinations as we could get.

We were warned upon check-in about the trains that rumble through, so we were prepared. As we drifted off to sleep, I heard a train -- very quiet and in the distance -- and it was actually sort of novel and relaxing.

The walls, however, seemed to be paper thin. We were woken up at least twice by the loud snoring of the person in the room next to us. Other than that, the room was decent. The bed was comfortable, and there was a bag containing an eye mask, earplugs, scented sheet spray, and a relaxing sleep CD (there was a clock radio/CD player that also played relaxing nature sounds in the room) on the bed when we checked in. We didn't have a view, which was unfortunate given how gorgeous the skyline is at night. Our window looked out into the middle of the hotel, so we had to keep our curtains closed at all times to avoid people walking down the hall/waiting for the elevator from seeing us.

We didn't try out the pool, but we did get a late-night appetizer in the hotel bar (highly recommend the caramel chocolate cheesecake. Skip the nachos -- they're not worth the money or the calories). We had the breakfast buffet at Pullman's restaurant in the hotel. For $12/person, I found the buffet to be highly unspectacular: cantaloupe and bananas were the only fruit; the eggs seemed cold and as if they'd been sitting out; there was one piece of French toast left, and we had to request that more be brought out; and the bagels were in a bag. I'd suggest the nearby Red Eye Cafe for breakfast instead.

Great Service but Weird Setup

Just got back from a trip to Indy. Like everyone says, the staff is great and the hotel is definitely unique. If you love trains, this is the place for you. The hotel is in a great location...close to lots of restaurants, shopping and bars (Howl at the Moon is great). They also have free wireless and computer stations near the lobby. The rooms were really clean.

But...the trains are really noisy and vibrate the whole building, including the beds making it difficult to sleep. They have really creepy statues throughout the hotel to represent the ghosts of the station, which I swear they periodically move. But what bothered me most is that all of the rooms faced inward, which meant that the only window in the room faced the common area where there were constantly tons of people. Therefore, unless you are comfortable with people constantly watching you, you have to keep the shades drawn, making the room feel really closed in. I heard this complaint from several people staying in the hotel. I can't imagine how bad it'd be if you stayed on the first floor.

Overall, the hotel was nice and a good change of pace, but I think I might explore some of the other local hotels next time i visit.

Beware of the rumbling trains

from JB55
Recently spent one night at the Crowne Plaza which is situated in the old Union Station in downtown Indianapolis. The decor of the hotel is fantastic, especially the way they have incorporated all of the architectural details of the station into the hotel, even the rooms. We had a part of an arch going through the corner of our 3rd floor room. Just be aware, and the front desk advises you of the same upon check-in, that the hotel occupies part of what is still a working railway station so the building does shake at times and you will hear the rumbling of passing trains. The Crowne Plaza does provide you with all of the latest sleep amenities (eyeshades, ear plugs, sleep CD, etc.) in case this were to pose a problem. I only found myself wakened once during the night and peeked out of our window to find two locomotives at rest just outside, occasionally releasing air from their brakes - made me feel like I was inside the movie "The Polar Express". Other than that, the service was spectacular and the hotel is conveniently located to all that downtown Indianapolis has to offer - shopping, fine restaurants, theater and basketball games.

We Were Thrilled!

My husband and I were going through Indianapolis on our Honeymoon in order to get to our destination. We didn't have a plan for that night because we didn't know how tired we would be and wanted to be able to play it by ear. We drove into the city and Crown Plaza was one of the first nice looking hotels we saw. The lobby was beautiful, the valets friendly and we decided to stay. To our delight and surprise they set us up in a "Train Car" room. It was so cool! We couldn't believe our luck at finding such a unique and fun hotel. The archetecture of the hotel was amazing and although the train car rooms were a little tight the cool idea of it made them worth it. The room was equipt with a CD for sleeping, ear plugs and a aromatherapy "relaxing" spray for the sheets. The staff was friendly and helpful at directing us to great restuarants where the locals would go--no tourist traps. There were computers available with internet in the lobby which we used to write home and tell our family that our Honeymoon was starting off great at the Crown Plaza!
