State House Inn a Winner in Springfield!

We stayed at the State House Inn over Presidents Day Weekend. We figured what better way to celebrate the holiday than to make a tour of Lincoln sites. The State House Inn was an obvious choice based on the reviews here as well as the great rate (free Internet didn't hurt either). We were not disappointed.

The hotel is located right in downtown, close to the State Capitol, the Lincoln Museum and Library, the Old State Capitol, the Lincoln Home, etc. The building is pretty generic on the outside, but inside it is decorated in a retro, 60s style. Check out their web site for a better idea.

Our room was a mini-suite, with the bedroom separated from the rest of the room. We had a microwave and refrigerator which was handy when bringing back leftovers from dinner. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was a bit narrow, but large enough for both of us to get ready without getting in each others way (mostly). The only item that was lacking was the couch, or what passed for a couch. It was one of those modern pieces of furniture that emphasizes looks over comfort. OK for one but pretty uncomfortable for two.

If you're looking for a place to stay in Springfield, definitely consider the State House Inn.

Wonderful Stay

Stayed here while visiting an aunt who was sick and it could not have better. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Unlike many hotels, the fron desk staff was knowledgeable on the sites around the city as well as restaurants, bars, and directions to every place we asked about. One desk clerk made a reservation for us and one morning the general manager talked to us for ten minutes telling us the history of the hotel and making other recommendations.

Location was perfect. business center was nice, rooms were very comfortable, and the lounge was unique and eclectic.

No need to look at any other hotels (and trust me we travel a great deal and are quite picky!).

This hotel is located in Downtown Springfield where all the historical sites are. The style of the rooms look dated, but clearly the furniture is from IKEA. The bed is super comfy, all down with pillow-top mattress. Free bath robes in bathroom. 2 TVs in king bedroom, one in the bedroom portion of the room, the other in the sitting area of the room. Clean, clean, clean room. Free internet access. Business center with free use of their computers with internet access, fax, printer, scanner, etc. FULL comp breakfast. None of this donut and coffee nonsense. The fitness center was quiet. Only hubby and I were in there. And the staff was SUPER nice!!!! Stay here...look no further!! We will forever stay in this hotel on our future trips!

what a great value

We just got back from a four day stay and we loved the hotel. Very clean facilities, friendly, accommodating staff and we loved the well designed rooms. The location is within walking distance of the new Abraham Lincolm museum, restaurants and tourist attractions in downtown Springfield. The 60's and 70's interior's style is extremely well done, with quality, comfortable furniture, and the lobby and bar are fun to hang out at. Free full breakfast, free internet access and the robes and coffee maker in the rooms just put this place over the top in my book, and at a great rate. Well done! We will be back.

Good value, no nonsense accommodation

Good value for money, the first thing we noticed in the room was real china mugs, not a couple of foam or paper cups. Good clean rooms with helpful staff, good bar and a short walk to eateries and sights in the downtown area. Breakfast was good with the only problem being no spoons for a while. It seems the 'dishwasher' called in sick and as a result my Cheerios waved goodbye to me in a sea of milk, but that is a very minor point. Gave me something to write in our travel diary. Worth a visit.

Conveniently located across the street from the State Capitol, retro-decor, friendly and helpful staff, delicious breakfast buffet (do-it-yourself waffles a MUST in my opinion) and a nice bar!

Better Love Train Whistles

This is a fine hotel with one BIG drawback; it is very close to the train station. Light sleepers will have trouble with all night harmonic train horns. Ask for a room away from the tracks, which, they say, are available in all but the busy season. Or byo ear plugs.

I stay in a lot of what I would call moderate hotels and there is no doubt this place is in the top 1% of my experience. Obviously fairly recently refurbished, great decor, inside it really looks like a much higher bracket establishment - in fact, I'd recommed staying here before they figure it out and jack prices up (which by the way are a good value also). Good breakfast with a lot of room and tables. Let me note I don't even like having a TV going in the corner in the breakfast room before I say the projection system there is too much.

I thought the beds were too soft but everyone else thought they were great. The regular room was on the smallish side but the suite - wow!

State House Delivers with Simplicity and Style

This was my second stay at the State House Inn and once again I wasn't disappointed. The King Suite room is a bargain at just $95 per night especially when coupled with the full breakfast buffet at no extra cost! One of the best breakfast buffets that I've ever had (even better than the buffet at Chicago's Palmer House).

The hotel lobby and rooms are decorated in a fun mod 50's design that is unlike anything that I've seen in other hotels within this price range. The king size bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed having two TV's (one in the bedroom and one in the living room).

One downside to this hotel, it might not please families who are looking for a hotel with a pool because there isn't one. But, on the other hand, the lack of families makes for a pretty quiet hotel.

Note that this hotel is within easy walking distance of the new Lincoln Library and Museum (which is big fun).

Fantastic rooms!

I recently visited Springfield, Illinois with my family to visit relatives and see the area. We stayed at the fabulous Quality Inn & Suites, State House, across from the Capitol. I highly recommend the Quality State House Inn. Don't be fooled by the exterior (it looks dated because the building is historic and cannot have exterior changes.) HOWEVER, the inside is modern and very nice. We had 3 2-room suites for the week and were very pleased with the spaciousness, cleanliness and the wonderful, comfortable beds/bedding. We were on the top floor and it was very quite. The breakfast buffet was extensive, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, biscuits, muffins, danish, waffles, potatoes, fruit, cereal-a great breakfast with friendly servers. I am very particular about my accomodations and highly recommend the Quality State House Inn to all who visit Springfield.

Top Local Tips for Springfield

Must-Do List: If visiting Springfield for the Lincoln sites, I advise that you not miss the following attactions, in this order: Lincoln Museum (budget four hours), Lincoln House (1 hour), Lincoln-Herndon Law Offce (1 hour), Lincoln Tomb (30 minutes).

President Lincoln The historical sites and museums were great. I really enjoyed learning about President Lincoln and the many accomplishments he had done.

Excellent family location. The Lincoln Museum/Library is simply fantastic. After seeing it, we had a hard time understanding the criticism we'd heard about the "Disney" treatment of Lincoln in the museum. Although there are those elements, as educators, we felt that in reaching the general public, it was brilliant in so many ways. It was reverant without being sappy, and fun, without being inappropriately so. It went a long way toward making visitors appreciate Lincoln as a man, not a God-like icon. Mary Todd Lincoln is also portrayed in a balanced and enlightened way - finally! What at first glance appears to be just a hall displaying her gowns is especially effective when you realize what the real message is. It's quite shocking. By the end, I was so moved, my eyes filled with tears. We almost skipped the Old Salem site for lack of time, but don't. Even though it's a cleaned up recreation of reality - it also helps visitors admire Lincoln all the more experiencing his early life in this small way.
