Poorly insulated but looks magnificant on the surface.

I was placed in a room facing the inner courtyard. There were huge a/c units on the ground floor rumbling all the way up the courtyard walls like an echo chamber - the thin windows hardly blocked any noise out. I was moved to a room facing the exterior of the building. The Train ran every 20 minutes until midnight. Closed windows were useless against the noise. Neighbor's shower plumbing and flushing toilets could be heard at night and morning. Lobby looks magnificant. I would only be willing to pay $150 per night because of the poor noise insulation.

DON'T Tip at The Palmer House Hilter

Celebrating our 30th anniversary at the Palmer House Hilton.
I checked in and gave James W., who worked at the front desk a $20.00 tip and explained it was our 30th anniversary. He took the money and said to me, I will do something special for you. When you get to your room you will be surprised! YEA I WAS! NOTHING. I called the front desk and asked JAMES W. if I was missing something. He said he was sorry and he would have it sent right up! Never did. Tipping at the front desk when checking in at the PALMER HOUSE HILTON, D O N' T. This really kills it for tipping industry!
The hotel was nice. Rooms very small especially the bathroom. Good location.
PARKING, I was charged $90. for three nights. The Palmer House automaticlly charged my credit card and put the receipt under my door. When I left the parking structure I had to insert my parking ticket to exit and the meter said $61.00??
Don't have The Palmer House Validate your parking ticket It will cost you more!

The Palmer House offers a perfect setting for the business and vacation guests worldwide. Everytime I go to Chicago I have to stay here due to there staff and wonderful Executive features such as the top floors executive concierge Lounge. Free Breakfast, Appetizers and free drinks perfect for the relaxation from a hard days work in the Windy City. Don;t take my word for it Mike Ditka in his restaurant on rush street was telling his guests that his favorite hotel by far is the palmer house due to the location and security of this hotel. I suggest the palmer house to all that come to this great City Chicago!

It was a pleasure to stay at the Palmer House Hotel. The history made the hotel a part of our vacation experience. The site of the hotel was so convient to where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see. Being an older adult the help from the staff enabled us to do more then we thought possible. It was a true pleasure to be part of the Palmer House family!

Nice location, but not all that

The Palmer House has an ideal location in downtown Chicago, but might be a little over-rated. I stayed their recently in a king non-smoking room. I wasn't all that impressed with the room. It was small, the bathroom wasn't nearly as nice as most Hilton's I've stayed in, and the bed was very stiff. I did appreciate the down pillows, but they didn't really go with the scratchy blankets. It also seemed like the walls were very thin b/c you could hear everybody around you. Did I mention that it was overly humid in the room? And...for the finale...they charge $10 to use the fitness center, which hardly even compares to our local YMCA. Overpriced!

For the first time I decided to take a chance and book on priceline.com. We asked for two rooms at a 4 star hotel in the Chicago Loop for a ridiculous $77. I was shocked that my offer was accepted for the Palmer House Hilton. After reading the reviews, however, I was quite worried about our stay and feared the dreadful studio single (which I did glimpse as we walked by). I decided to take a chance and phoned the hotel directly and made several special requests such as refurbished rooms, connecting, non-smoking and two queen beds. The reservationist, Mary, couldn't have been nicer about recording our requests, but did caution us that since we booked through Priceline they couldn't guarantee our requests. We were very happy with the hotel's location and the upscale elegance of the hotel itself. I'd say the restoration is going beautifully. Even thought we showed up to check in several hours too early the front desk was wonderful about helping us get into our rooms in 45 minutes. Meanwhile the concierge desk recommended a great nearby restaurant for the Chicago style pizza we were dying to try. Our rooms were just as we had asked for and quite large. We didn't mind a bit that we didn't have a view. It was so nice to stay in an old hotel with all the architechtural interest and gilding the great ones had yet have all the modern amenities we take for granted. The hotel's location is within easy access of the free trolley system. That free trolley is surely the best discovery of our stay. We rode everywhere we wanted to visit downtown and it was easy to travel on. I would definitely recommend the Palmer House Hilton with the caveat to phone the hotel reservation staff in advance with your special requests.

Just got back from Chicago. I also was concerned after reading some of the reviews, but when we got there it was great. 2 dbl/2 baths are nice when you have kids with plenty of floor space for roll-away or sleeping bag. Didn't try dining, seemed a bit pricey. Bell hops and concierge most helpful. Yes we will stay there again.

Loved it, would like to come back soon!

We were a little nervous after reading some of the reviews. But when we got there we just loved it. We got one of the smallest rooms but it really wasnt that small. Besides we wernt planning on spending anytime in there except to sleep. It was a great location. We walked everywere.
The only time we took a cab was to get somthing to eat and we were not really sure where it was. Once we new where we were we walked back. Our view out of our window wasnt the greatest and the room service was a bit high but who wouldnt expect that. On the corner we ate breakfast for only $15 for 2 people. (eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast and drink)For only $90 a night we couldnt beat it. And if we go back and looking to spend as little money for a hotel as we can, the first place I will look is the Palmer House Hilton.

I recently stayed at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago after booking it through Priceline.com. I was a bit concerned about what to expect after reading mixed reviews on this website. I was pleasantly surprised. The room we had was great. Even though Priceline nor the hotel could guarantee my request for two double beds and a non-smoking room, the hotel was able to accomodate my request AND my room had two bathrooms!!! The hotel staff was pleasant and the concierge was great.
They were able to answer all of my questions regarding directions, best form of transporation to use to get to attractions, etc. Another good feature of this hotel is its location. It is close to Mchigan Avenue and popular attractions. Only one tip I would give people about the hotel - do not eat at the French Quarters restaurant if you do not want to get ripped off. The ambiance is nice and the food is good but it is way overpriced.

WE got this hotel through priceline when staying overnight to see the Lion King. When I read some of the reviews I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw our room. the room was clean reasonably spacious and had two small but full baths . We were running late so we appreciated the fact that check in went quickly and smoothly. The rooms aren't the most exciting as far as decor goes but they were attractive. We had double beds in our room instead of queens but they were very comfortable. the hotel lobby was beautiful and the bell captain was the most helpful and courteous I have ever encountered in any hotel. We would certainly stay here again.

Stayed July 11, 12th--Great hotel, very nice at front desk, originally booked for queen bed but upgraded to two doubles with two bathrooms for same price!!!would definitely stay again!

Top Local Tips for Chicago

The Grill Room We saw Jersey Boys at the LaSalle Bank Theatre for the 2pm showing--the restaurant is directly across the street from the theatre. Rather than fight the crowd trying to dine before the 8pm show, we waited 'til 7:30pm and practically had the place to ourselves, as people were leaving for the later show. Food/service was excellent!

O'Hare Take the Blue Line to Monroe. Then it's only 2 blocks to walk. And cheap ($2/ person) and most likely the same fast as the shuttle busses that stop at nearly every hotel or get stuck in traffic.

Taking Amtrak This hotel is within walking distance of Union Station for those who want to see the sights as they travel to the hotel.
