Comfortable and convenient

Right downtown, just a short walk from the shuttle which delivers you to Navy Pier, the Lenox is serene and attractive. With perques like fresh fruit at the front desk, complimentary morning paper and continental breakfast, this hotel is a very good value. The staff are friendly, yet professional and attentive, and the rooms are clean, quiet and packed with amenities--like a mini-bar with comparatively low prices.

My second night, I was dog-tired from a day of sight-seeing and just wanted to curl up in front of the TV, so I really appreciated the full kitchen. I walked just around the corner to the pizza place and returned to heat up my pie in a real oven. Almost as good as room service.

I certainly recommend this hotel for the budget-minded or business traveler and I will stay here again on my next trip to Chicago.

Great Stylish Hotel

from mlanm
Stayed at The James Chicago for our anniversary and couldn't have been happier. The hotel is very stylish and modern and everyone from the doorman to the front desk attendent were very friendly. The location is great and the rooms are super stylish and modern. I would stay here again anytime. We got the room through priceline and when we arrived the room we had reserved wasn't available, but without even asking the front desk upgraded us to a suite that had a seating area. The room we had was a bit on the small side but it wasn't enough to complain about at all. Overall a great hotel, will definately consider staying here the next time we are in Chicago.

Liked it BUT it tries too hard to be trendy

from athtrasna
The James Hotel has many pluses, it's location being one. Located within 30 seconds of Michigan Avenue, it's aperfect hotel for those planning to tread the Magnificent Mile.

The lobby is small but adequate. It did smell of gas (the natural, heating kind) and this smell persisted despite us alerting staff to it on more than one occasion.

The room was stark. I've stayed in other trendy hotels but the James lacks the warm touches, even a red chair made the room feel bleak. Having said that, it was a large room for a city centre hotel and well furnished and equipped. The plasma tv and entertainment centre including a mp3 player connection were apreciated. The bed was exquisitey comfortable.

Top marks to the bathroom. The door slides and was a little heavy but it was stylish yet functional. Dr Kiehls toiletries were well received. The shower was powerful and the towels soft.

All in all I would return, but only through hotwire/priceline again, the hotel's price list is a little steep.

Perfect stay at the James

from redpainter
This has been the most comfortable of all my experiences in hotels. From the front door you are greeted with a smile, the modern simplistic design is inviting, the room was spacious and bright. Room service was there twice during the day. David Burke's resturant was a super plus. I would come back

Think modern. Great hotel for the century...

Excellent Stay!!

For those travelers who are jaded by the martini's and simplicity, stay somewhere else. Very trendy, close to shopping, resturants and night life.

Loved It - Going back again

from travelgirlontario
We stayed at this for a long weekend in July. We loved it so much we are going back for Thanksgiving (we are from Canada).

This hotel is a boutique hotel so does not have the huge entrance/lobby you may expect. The rooms are beautiful with flat screen TV's, modern decor, duvets and very comfortable beds.

The location is perfect if you want to be close to Michigan ave.

The restaurant on site is excellent ...huge portions of meat ... try the martinis they rock!!

Lacks Attention to Detail

from Pashapuff
The best thing this hotel has going for it is its workout facility. The location is not bad either but dont expect a view. Our room was a studio suite on the 17th floor. It was adequate, but for all the hype, lacked attention to detail. For example, the air conditioning was noisy, the safe was too high for a normal sized person to reach comfortably, there were no shelves or drawers, the shower was nothing special with a standard motel 6 style tub and unreliable water pressure. Additionally, we did not recieve turn down service or for that matter, much in the way of housekeeping. The conscierge line was busy for two hours so we made our own reservations for dinner. The mimimalist martini motif is a tad overdone and unoriginal- the bar in the room had 4 glasses for martinis but none for champagne. But hey, at least the bed was comfortable.

Cool and Trendy Hipster Hotel

from Relax4Life
Stayed here for business and it was great! FREE wireless internet can't be beat. The beds are super comfortable. The gym is AWESOME!!! used it everyday and the equipment is super new w/ TVs attached to the equipment. Plasma tvs are a nice modern touch.

So what wasn't up too par? Not too much- you can kind of tell certain things still need to be renovated... or you can tell that certain rooms are products of a patch up renovation job...I'm sure this will change w/ service menu a little lacking...and no desk to work in the room??? That's a little strange since they hold quite a few business meetings.

Other than that, great hotel w/ a fun vibe and close to a TON of restaurants/shopping. Not a bad choice if you are going to be in Chicago...price is a bit steep but when all the details get ironed out it may be worth it.

Just Fine

from rwp05
The best thing the new James has going for it is its publicist. You simply cannot open a travel magazine without stumbling accross an article on some aspect of the hotel. The truth is the James is absolutley fine. But make no mistake, you've seen it all before...self conscious design, minimalist decor, determinedly groovy ambiance. The brand new rooms (ours was deluxe, but many overlook and inner court) are smallish, failry stark yet full of amenities. The gym is terrific, as is should be. One of the owners is the man behind the Equinox chain.
Would I stay here again? Probably not. On the high end The Penninsula, Park Hyatt and Four Seaons are our favorites. In the mid price rage the Sofitel is a better bet..especially if you opt for the amazingly reasonable Executive suite or sprawling one bedroom. The James, for all its attempts is a little bit ordinary.

Awesome but BEWARE

from Jerzygal
Recently booked a long weekend at The James, with hardly any other reviews to rely upon. It is truly unique - hip, trendy and cool. The room and amenities were beyond our expectations (ugh, except for the worst smelling toiletries ever/bring your own. With so many negative comments you would think they would have changed them by now). The location could not be better and the staff was professional and accommodating on every level. The gym is outstanding and, although we didn't have the opportunity to try it, we heard the restaurant was excellent. OK - now the bad part. PLEASE BEWARE - if you have, or even suspect that you have an allergy to down or feathers do not stay here. What I thought was the most wonderful bedding and linens I had ever experienced, sent me to the ER, making me miss the entire last day of my stay. I was covered with head to toe fiery hives for which I was prescribed some pretty heavy-duty medications. Although the staff apologized profusely and housekeeping changed out all the bedding, I suspect the allergens had permeated the entire room. Immediately upon returning home, the rash cleared. The hotel does offer non-allergenic alternatives, but if you are at all in doubt, don't take the chance. Some reactions are far more serious than a rash. Such a pity since The James would have been my first choice for a return trip to Chicago.

Okay at The James

Our stay at The James was quite nice. The rooms were reasonably sized, with contemporary furnishings (think W Hotel chain). The 40" flat-screen TVs were quite nice. They advertise Ipod connections to their in-room stereo, but I had no luck getting it to work.

The hotel is very well located, if you want to stay near Michigan Avenue. The workout facilities were as nice as I've seen in a hotel. Great workout equipment and plenty of it.

Staff seemed quite good, except our room wasn't cleaned until 2pm or 3pm. Around 4pm, they appear for turndown service! The bellman was very nice and helpful, and front desk staff was competent. Didn't get a chance to try the bar, but it appeared lively.

Overall, a nice stay and will likely return.

Top Local Tips for Chicago

Priceline/Hotwire Don't pay full price for downtown hotel unless you feel the need to waste money...

Rosebud on Rush for lunch! Rosebud is a terrific Italian restaurant and can be pricey at night. GO FOR LUNCH! The menu is great and make sure to have a nice leisurely late lunch at a fraction of the dinner prices!

Additional tip Book on hotwire and hope you get this will save tons!! Also have concierge store your bags after checkout if you have a later flight or want to explore more of the city
