Historical Traveller Reviews of The Drake Hotel Chicago

full of old world charm

from A TripAdvisor Member
Me and my partner stayed at The Drake for 2 nights in September 2003 on a stopover to LA, we had read the mixed reviews and decided to try it out for ourselves. This hotel is fabulous, from the moment we checked in we fell in love with her,ok the bathroom door didn't close but it all added to it's quirky charm. The bedrooms were fine and fresh fruit on every floor was a nice touch. We had a wonderful time and there is nothing quite like having breakfast overlooking Lake Michigan in the Oak Terrace. I would highly recommend The Drake if you want a hotel with a bit of character. We will return to Chicago and certainly stay here again.

I spent a few day at The Drake nad it was wonderful. My room overlooked the lake nad I had access to a special lounge on the top floor that served free drinks all night! I also ate and drank in the Coq d'Or and this bar was the highlight of my trip. Although 70 years old te ambiance and service is second to none. I would highly recommend the Coq d'Or for giant Martinis and great service. The Drake hotel is wonderful...

What a great hotel

Just stayed 3 nights at the Drake, 25/26/27 December and the whole place was beautifully decorated for Christmas. I had already paid for the room online which was just as well because I arrived at O'hare minus my credit cards!! I contacted the hotel and they agreed to pay for the shuttle from the airport until I could get my cards replaced.
The assistant manager (Mario) and his staff were excellent thoughout our stay. Although I cannot comment on the restaurants, the Coq d'or bar had a great atmosphere and the food was good value.....again bar and waiting staff were terrific. One dissapointment was the lack of coffee maker in the room but then again the walk though the hotel to the complimentary drinks every morning was a delight. The hotel is in a great location just minutes from the Hancock building and Michigan Avenue and I would have no hesitation recommending to others.....especially when you can get rooms for as little as $99.00 a night.

RUINED OUR THANKGIVING HOLIDAY

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Drake is horrible. They ruined our Thanksgiving with stale food, horrible service. ("Hey if you going to tack on a 17% gratuity, you'd better earn it) What's worse is the management has not been responsive to my complaints. That is a 5 star hotel? PLEASE....Make note, I am not the only one that has written a review like this for the "DRAKE" If you have a special occassion, don't depend on them to meet the need. DONT SPEND ANY OF YOUR MONEY AT THE DRAKE HOTEL. The dinner was HORRIBLE!

We are also going to seek relief if they don't refund the money we paid for the "meal"

Great Christmas Spot

from A TripAdvisor Member
I always wanted to stay at the Drake, because I've heard great things.
It was everything I had hoped! Very classy. Great place during the Christmas season, because of all the beautiful decorations. Plus, it was great for us, because it's right on the north side of Michicgan Ave, so we can shop all day, then be right back at our hotel. The service was great, and they even gave us a free upgrade!

Excellant value!!

Just had two nights at the Drake, had read many of the reviews from previous visiters and now see what some people complained about. Yes the bathrooms are missing a shelf, some views are not very good etc etc but if that is all you have to complain about then you need to take a good look at yourself! I just wish we had stayed a few days later as we stayed 19th and 20th Nov. The place is looking amazing with the decorations which were just being finished. The giant tree in the loby, the Chocolate Sears Tower and the Icing winter scene of chicago with all sweets....absolutely stunning. No complaints with the service, the room, the package we booked which included breakfast and tickets to the Art Institute. Enjoyed cocktails in the piano bar.. I cant think of anything negative to say about the place. Did not eat in the restaurants, for no other reason than we preferred to go elsewhere. I proposed to my girlfriend at the nearby Signature room restaurant on the 95th floor of the John Hancock building which the concierge arranged the reservation and confirmed with me discreetly. Enjoyed the whole experiance and am glad I did it there so we have somewhere nice to go back and remember. Would thoroughly recommend it to any friends or family, especially to go during Thanksgiving / Christmas.

Complete Joke

This is my fathers favorite Chicago area hotel, so I thought I would try it out while in the Chicago area. However, after thinking about the ol' italianate feel of the place and its location relative to what i was interested in, etc. I cancelled my reservation, favoring the Hotel 71, which is a pretty darmn nice hotel, and thus my problems with the Drake began. In a nutshell, they have nicked me for $200+ because they never gave me a cancellation number, and I didn't think to get one, I just figured that they would take care of it and didn't give it a second thought, until of course, my credit card bill came. So, I have been arguing with them for weeks over aq cencellation number they never gave me and I am at my wits end. In short, any place that gives such poor customer service doesn't deserve your business.

Not what I expected !!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed two nights at the Drake. on october the 4th and 5th. We were expecting luxury (like at any Ritz Carltons for example) and comfort. We were astonished with the size of the room, the quality of the bed, no feather bed no feather comforter. The towels were small and old, the shower curtain looked all weary. For us the experience was a disaster we booked on the internet a king deluxe and we got a small room with a nice view. I left a long complaint and I am still waiting for their response. I called the front desk to complaint and they never payed attention to my claim. I booked and early check in and they left us waiting for three hours.

I do not know why Princess Di liked it so much !!

I certainly wont recommend it and stick to Ritz Carlton with my eyes closed.

In April 2003 my friend's dad suprprised us with a trip to Chicago for her birthday. Upon our arrival, we got off the plane at O'Hare airport and boarded a taxi. While we were riding, my friend's dad called the Drake to see if there were any openings. There were. As we pulled up to the Drake my friend and I's jaws dropped. We were very "Wowed". The bellman took our bags, gave a ticket stub and took our bags up. We walked into the hotel, again being "Wowed". We went up the stairs to be greeted by a huge vase full of flowers! ( I stood next to it and it was taller than me, and I'm 5 feet! ) We turned and walked to the check-in/out counter. Check-in was quick. We were told we would be staying one the 1st floor ( one story up from Lobby (L) level ) and that our room number would be room 115. We walked to the elevators where another bellman took us up. The hallways were so quiet. We walked to our room, slid the key in and the door wouldn't take the card. After about 10 times we went and got someone. The housekeeping came with the master card. The door opened. They said they were very sorry and then left. We went to see our view: A view of Michigan Ave.! Our beds were great, and we had two beautiful marble bathrooms with beautiful soaps and shampoos. A mending kit and a shower cap. Even more. The bathrooms had a hairdryer ( I would pack a hair dryer, I have short thin hair and it took me about 45 minutes for me to dry my hair and when we had to go eat it still wasn't dry! )and an extending magnifiying mirror. We had a safe, an excellent closet, walk-in. When we opened the door to the minibar, our jaws dropped again. A stocked fridge, a trow-away camara, gummies, snacks, crackers, candy, etc..... The mini-bar came with a price list , whooow. $16.50 for a trow-away camara. We had to buy it because there wasn't a store that sold camaras until 15 minutes away!
We only bought the camara. The tv was huge. We had wireless internet on the tv like the new Msn-Tv. You could access your e-mail for a fee.
There is a neat book in the room about the Drake's history. Queen Elizabeth II stayed there! We had free postcards and stationary in our room. We went shopping. Our bags were taken up to our rooms by the bellman, we returned to a broken door lock again. Housekeeping came and fixed it again.Around 5:00 we went to dinner at the Rosebud Steakhouse, just a short miniute walk down the street. The food was great. Our waiter was Teddy. At the end of the meal I said my compliments to the Chef. As we were about to leave, Teddy brought out the chef, so I cound meet him and tell him personally. (I want to be a cook when I grow up.
) Later on we left to see the Lion King on Broadway around 7:00 We came back around 11:00. Our door was finally fixed. We ordered a sunday and a coke from room-service. The sunday was $3.00 and the $2.00! $! Five dollars total for a snack. Room-service promptly delivered it. We set the tray outside our room to find we we woke up and left the hotel to go home the tray was still there. We did have a free complimentary newspaper outside our door, through. I would love to come back to the Drake again, and you will love it, too.
