Great old hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberI would warn anyone who is thinking about staying here, though, the less expensive rooms are very very very very very small, so we had to upgrade to a suite, which was very nice, but of course, more expensive. But nice. Nicest bed I have ever slept in, as far as a hotel goes. If you aren't a TV watcher, the smaller room would be okay, but if you like to watch TV, you will be disappointed, cause for some strange reason, they put the TV's to the side of the bed.......I don't know about you, but I like to get under the covers and surf chanels at night, and you would break your neck watching TV if you stayed in the smaller rooms. The suite had the TV located at the end of the bed, making much more sense and nicer on the neck!
Also, the restaurant in the hotel is nice for breakfast, but don't order dinner there. UGH.
This really is a nice old hotel, but it is geared to older adults, not much there for little ones or teenagers, so if you are an older adult who likes old hotels with great location...this is the place for you. I will stay there again, but this time, I know to order a suite!
Had a great time at the Allerton
from A TripAdvisor MemberA Gem on the Mag Mile
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe service was exceptional and the bellmen were extremely helpful and pleasant.
I'm partial to older hotels that have been remodeled. The Allerton has much character and with that may come smaller rooms and elevators. It's worth it.
We loved our 17th room with a marvelous distant view of the Water Tower and Lake Michigan. Well thought out details. Great location with steps away from many restaurants. We would return.
Disappointment in the Windy City
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe Had A Good Time !!
from LikesToTravel_99Since I was there for a workshop, I was able to sample their food and it was excellent. Also, I highly recommend the room service pizza.
Overall, a great place to stay. Elevator service can be a bit slow and I did hear some fellow workshop attendees complaining about small rooms; but we had a good time and would not hesitate to return.
In The Thick of It!!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberGood service and sensational location! Rooms & elevators are on the small side - however to walk out and into the thick of the Mag Mile was exceptional! No robe in the bathroom as advertised.
All other room amenities were above average -
cleanliness of rooms - cd - hotel staff and restaurant! I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!
perfect
from A TripAdvisor MemberGood for Business Travel
from A TripAdvisor MemberGreat stay with family
from A TripAdvisor MemberAlso, my Priority Club gold got us an upgraded room. Late December is not a busy time so rooms were probably more available, and ours was wonderful. All this at a ridiculously low internet rate. But I was most impressed at how comfortable I felt staying there with children.
Shopping in Chicago is a breeze
from minzinThe good part -it was great to step out the door and be right in the thick of things. The subway was about a five minute walk away and we were able to take the subway from Midway aiport to the hotel at 11:00 at night without any problems. Just so you know, Chicago Rapid Transit Cards work like a money card that you can add money to and use multiple times. The machines don't give change back. We also bought the Museum City-pass card (five museums and the Hancock observatory for about half the price) and were able to get our money's worth for that. It was great to walk up to the city-pass desk and bypass the big lines for tickets. We had a great first visit to Chicago. Thanks to all you fellow Trip-advisor users. :)
Top Local Tips for Chicago
Take train when can Cheaper to take train to Chicago if you can, parking $30-40 a day
EZ travel with the CTA Take the CTA Blue LIne from O'Hare to your hotel. It was super-convenient, and only costs $2pp. We took a taxi from the airport and it cost us $45. Luckily we were pretty transit savvy once it came to the end of our trip and we learned better.
Look for onlline deals! Shop the various web sites for deals on 4 star hotels in downtown Chicago. I have stayed at some amazing hotels in the heart of Chicago for under $100 per night. A little time spent online will save you a ton of money and have you sleeping in plush surroundings.
