Great old hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a great old hotel, located on a nice corner of Michigan Ave and Huron. (a little noisy, but we sleep with a fan, so that helped) The staff is very kind and they try hard to meet your travel needs.
I would warn anyone who is thinking about staying here, though, the less expensive rooms are very very very very very small, so we had to upgrade to a suite, which was very nice, but of course, more expensive. But nice. Nicest bed I have ever slept in, as far as a hotel goes. If you aren't a TV watcher, the smaller room would be okay, but if you like to watch TV, you will be disappointed, cause for some strange reason, they put the TV's to the side of the bed.......I don't know about you, but I like to get under the covers and surf chanels at night, and you would break your neck watching TV if you stayed in the smaller rooms. The suite had the TV located at the end of the bed, making much more sense and nicer on the neck!
Also, the restaurant in the hotel is nice for breakfast, but don't order dinner there. UGH.
This really is a nice old hotel, but it is geared to older adults, not much there for little ones or teenagers, so if you are an older adult who likes old hotels with great location...this is the place for you. I will stay there again, but this time, I know to order a suite!

Had a great time at the Allerton

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just got back from staying at Allerton and I liked it a lot. After doing an early check in we got to the room and it was smaller than normal hotel rooms but for two people It was nice. I was pleased with the remoldeled look at the hotel. Although a few minor problems I wasn't concerned because they could happen anywhere (ie. forgotton washcloths, delivary of towel to wrong room). If you have read the other reviews I can testify that the elevators are small and there are only 3 elevators for 20 something floors...Thankfully we were on the 6th floor and could take the stairs to the 3rd floor which is where the lobby and elevator to the ground are. This hotel is central to everything you want to be close to...Free Trolly, several malls, shops, food, Walgreens (came in handy at 2am), and much more. I would stay here again.

A Gem on the Mag Mile

When we arrived at the Allerton, we were upgraded to a suite as Priority Club members. The kind man who checked us in at a desk in the lobby listened to our preferences and found the perfect room. We booked online at the hotel's site and received an excellent rate, so I found the upgrade a pleasant surprise.
The service was exceptional and the bellmen were extremely helpful and pleasant.
I'm partial to older hotels that have been remodeled. The Allerton has much character and with that may come smaller rooms and elevators. It's worth it.
We loved our 17th room with a marvelous distant view of the Water Tower and Lake Michigan. Well thought out details. Great location with steps away from many restaurants. We would return.

Disappointment in the Windy City

from A TripAdvisor Member
Though the location is as good as it gets and the rooms and hotel are clean and appealing, rooms are very small, elevator service is very inconvenient and road noise is loud.

We Had A Good Time !!

from LikesToTravel_99
Just returned from a workshop at the Allerton Crowne Plaza. My husband and I stayed there along with two kids. We were given a handicap accessible room which included a sleeper sofa with a second tv in a separate area. I would consider it a mini-suite layout. This was a big plus w/ 2 kids.

Since I was there for a workshop, I was able to sample their food and it was excellent. Also, I highly recommend the room service pizza.

Overall, a great place to stay. Elevator service can be a bit slow and I did hear some fellow workshop attendees complaining about small rooms; but we had a good time and would not hesitate to return.

In The Thick of It!!!

From start to finish this was a good deal!
Good service and sensational location! Rooms & elevators are on the small side - however to walk out and into the thick of the Mag Mile was exceptional! No robe in the bathroom as advertised.
All other room amenities were above average -
cleanliness of rooms - cd - hotel staff and restaurant! I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

the hotel is right in the middle of the magic mile. near the lake, countless restaurants, the hancock building (highly recommend for night viewing), and other attractions all within walking distance. also very near to the train. the staff was courteous, and quite helpful with assistance and local info--especially the bellmen. the hotel was beautiful. our room was quite small, just big enough for the bed, small desk, and tv, but it was still very nice, and we had a view of the water from our window. my only regret--bringing a car. you don't need one here, and it's $20-35 per day to park anywhere downtown. next time i'll fly, and i'll be back to the allerton.

Good for Business Travel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife stayed with me here while I was on business. There was much to like-- the location is excellent, the concierge was extremely helpful and the room was quiet. I asked for a room that was quiet and had a good view -- I got one of the two. My room was quiet, but looked out on a fire escape. When my wife and I were looking for a quick, casual, but nice dinner (a difficult combination) the concierge sent us to just the right place and got us to the head of the long line. For the business traveller the services were OK. Free high-speed internet (faster than my cable modem) was a plus. Only negatives were the broken sink faucet and toilet that never quite flushed right. If you're going to be busy in Chicago anyway, this is a decent combination of good price and location.

Great stay with family

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here with three children in late December, 2003. Location is great for American Girl Place and other shopping. Staff was really outstanding to the children, providing us with "front of the line" passes for Walnut Room and coupons for Hancock tower. Very friendly.
Also, my Priority Club gold got us an upgraded room. Late December is not a busy time so rooms were probably more available, and ours was wonderful. All this at a ridiculously low internet rate. But I was most impressed at how comfortable I felt staying there with children.

Shopping in Chicago is a breeze

We ended up here after purchasing a room on I found the other positive reviews to be very accurate. The elevators were the only bummer. They were tiny and quite often too full to accept passangers.
The good part -it was great to step out the door and be right in the thick of things. The subway was about a five minute walk away and we were able to take the subway from Midway aiport to the hotel at 11:00 at night without any problems. Just so you know, Chicago Rapid Transit Cards work like a money card that you can add money to and use multiple times. The machines don't give change back. We also bought the Museum City-pass card (five museums and the Hancock observatory for about half the price) and were able to get our money's worth for that. It was great to walk up to the city-pass desk and bypass the big lines for tickets. We had a great first visit to Chicago. Thanks to all you fellow Trip-advisor users. :)

Top Local Tips for Chicago

Take train when can Cheaper to take train to Chicago if you can, parking $30-40 a day

EZ travel with the CTA Take the CTA Blue LIne from O'Hare to your hotel. It was super-convenient, and only costs $2pp. We took a taxi from the airport and it cost us $45. Luckily we were pretty transit savvy once it came to the end of our trip and we learned better.

Look for onlline deals! Shop the various web sites for deals on 4 star hotels in downtown Chicago. I have stayed at some amazing hotels in the heart of Chicago for under $100 per night. A little time spent online will save you a ton of money and have you sleeping in plush surroundings.
