Elegant hotel and surroundings

I really loved this Sofitel--the rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated, and the bathroom was the biggest one I've ever seen in a hotel! The staff was helpful and friendly, and the overall atmosphere was very relaxing. We loved walking around the neighborhood and saw plenty of new shopping and recreation areas we'd missed in previous trips to Chicago. We took advantage of a special deal on a travel web site, which was an added bonus. I've already been back and will definitely come again!

This is a superb, clean, spectacularly luxurous hotel that is priced way below what it is worth. In general, I hate large hotels, and always feel ripped off, especially in large American cities. The Sofitel in some way made amends for every poor experience I have had with hotels.
The management is fast, intelligent, sophisitcated, and extremely polite. For example, the stopper on the large bath tub was stuck. In 5 minutes, a technician and an assistant came up and fized the problem immeidately and refused a tip I offered. Whenever I called, and I calld about 4 times, the phone was picked up immediately and I was adressed by my name. I did breakfast room service twice, and the breakfasts are spectacularly French and amazing--the crepes with ham and gruyere was tremendous and the continental breakfast is awe inspiring and enormous.
The view of the city is unsurpassed and I took several photos at night that turned out to be spectacular. The hallways and lobbies are somehting I never have experienced. The fitness center is large, clean, and well organized, and there is a huge glass bowl of fresh fruit in the fitness center along with tons of rolled white cotton towles and water. The hotel is spotlessly clean. The bathrooms are enormous and pampering. The shower is a large marble cavernous afair that must have its own timezone and zip code. I did not want to leave the bed. The location is perfect. Let me say again that I hate large hotels in large American cities, but I absolutely love this hotel. If you visit you will not want to leave.

Always A Treat

This is a really nice place! I've stayed there twice in the last 60 days, and I will be staying there again in 60 +/- days. We are in suburban Indianapolis, IN, and have been going to Chicago for concerts.
This hotel is the place to stay, no matter wher the venue is! wE saw Sim & Garf, The White Stripes & will See Elvis Costello, and these digs are close to all the action. One tip - skip the restaurant & order room service breakfast -"Le bar" is cool but expensive, and the staff is really quite friendly, esp. considering they are mostly French, and only sometime "stand-off-ish" which is what we have all come to expect from the froggies!!! Try it once! You'll be hooked!!!

Disappointing Stay

My father and I were VERY disappointed with our stay at the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower. First of all, back in August, I had requested a non-smoking double room. When we got to the room, it had an incredibly smoky odor and along with that, there were ashes all over the bathtub and sink! I called down to the front desk and alerted them of this problem and was told that they didn't have any non-smoking double rooms left, so they put us in a junior suite. Well, it ended up that my dad got the bed and I had to sleep on the MOST uncomfortable pull-out sofa imaginable. Once you would lie down, you could feel the steel frame on your back. Needless to say, I couldn't sleep the entire night. I definitely did not think that the front desk accomodated us well at all.

Another problem I experienced was the incompetence of the bellhop person. On my way down to the front desk to switch to different rooms, I saw that one of my bags was just sitting on the rolling cart. He apparently forgot to drop it off with the other luggage.

The only thing good about this stay was the breakfast that was included in the price of the room. I think it was a special.

All in all, it was a very disappointing stay and I will not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Really loved the Sofitel Water Tower. It's the perfect hotel for a great city. From the moment I checked in and was able to practice my French to the moment I checked out and had a delightful conversation with the bellman, life was quite marvelous. The food was very good, the service was excellent, the ambience tres chic. It's also a top spot for shopping in Chicago. Go stretch your legs by the waterfront, but if you're a business traveller who just needs a gym, the one in the hotel is loaded with machines. This is the place to stay in a marvelous city.
Only negative was a co-worker had her laptop stolen from her room.

Exceptional hotel. Stayed for two nights on a mini-vacation. Location is superb near the Michigan Avenue shopping and dining. The room was just wonderful. Most comfortable bed we have ever stayed in. The bar was hopping and had very international flavor. The service was all excellent. The room service for breakfast was great the first day. The second day the power went out, but room service showed up with an okay meal. Definitely would stay here again and will investigate other Sofitel's.

I booked three rooms for my mother's birthday weekend in Chicago based on your reviews. We loved the hotel. Breakfast food and service in the hotel restaurant were excellent. Joey the Concierge was very helpful.
All the staff was friendly and there seemed to be one doorman for each guest. If you are there on Sunday take time to attend the Fourth Presbyterian Church a block away on Michigan. The history and service are a great break from the hustle of the city.

Beware of the valet parkers!

i valeted my lexus and it was returned with a smashed side mirror. They admitted it was their fault, and now they won't pay the $500 to fix it because we can't prove it was not broken before!!! the hotel is wonderful, the rooms are new and nice, but we will never stay here again because of this....Be sure to inspect your car before you leave!

If you like to be indulged, stay at the Sofitel! Service is amazing- doors are opened for you, the valet radioed ahead so my information was waiting at the desk when I got there, beds were inducive to excellent sleep! Details, like fresh flowers, water at bedside each night with turndown service, fabulous bathroom!, nice view and very quiet! I don't think we heard another person on our floor anytime! The location just steps away from Michigan Avenue is wonderful- besides, the hotel is near everything, lots of places to eat nearby, the Corner Bakery a few blocks down is a great place to start the day! We didn't order room service, or eat at the hotel, but the bar looked pleasant. I would definitely stay there again!

The BEST for Chicago and Michigan Avenue

Once a year a dear friend and I have a long weekend getaway to Chicago. We have stayed here and theredowntown, up north, out in the burbs, but our recent stay at the Sofitel was absolute the best weve had. Guest service is most important, but so is décor, ambience, the little details that travelers remember. For example: the valets new our names by the second day, night saw the lobby illuminated with soft lights and many beautiful burning candles, our bathroom had a fresh flower in it every day (and the bathroom was a palace!), an Ethernet cable was delivered instantly to the room when I needed one for my Mac, and so much more. Get this: there is a speaker in the bathroom so you can here the TV while getting ready. The beds were a dreamsoft sheets, duvets and a feather bed. Do not miss the Sofitel for your trip to downtown Chicago. David and I loved it!!! (i actually spoke to the manager to paraise the staff...)

Better than expected

Great experience from the beginning. People were very friendly and helpful from booking reservation to the valet car service leaving the hotel. New hotel and very clean and modern. Comfy feather beds and roomy bathrooms with all the amenities. Consierge was very helpful booking the dinner reservations. Great location just three blocks from the Magnificient Mile but without the congestion. Wonderful experience.
I'll recommend it to all my friends traveling to Chicago.

Top Local Tips for Chicago

The bus is a must. For out-of-towners, I understand the fear of buses when in an unfamiliar city. I grew up and currently live in a place where there is no public bus system. However, I found everyone friendly and helpful, and when I was in doubt, I asked someone at the bus stop or the bus driver if I was boarding the right bus. My friend and I were told to take the #10 bus by a staff member inside the museum, only to find out after waiting in the freezing cold that the #10 is only weekends and holidays. A stranger noticed us and told us this, and recommended a bus stop less than a block away, and told us which bus to get on to take us back downtown, not as close as we would have liked, but it was better than waiting for the weekend! Also better than paying another $20 for a cab ride back, which was what we did on our way to the MOSAI.

Tempo Cafe Come out of the Sofitel and turn right, and at the end of the block is a cafe serving 3 egg omelettes and other fantastic american breakfast favourites - much better value than the hotel itself, and completely packed out on a morning with locals, always a good sign of the quality.

Andy's Jazz Club We had an excellent Sunday evening at this club and would highly recommend others to do the same - not too pricey, although book ahead to avoid disappointment.
