from A TripAdvisor MemberStay in the Historic Tower, it is worth the surcharge of $50.00. Rooms are luxurious, and yes a hotel with an oversized bathroom with a separate shower is a treat. Would have liked a Jacuzzi, but given the Historic Nature of the Building this may not be possible.
Check the swimming pool out. It is free for hotel guests, and it is completely out of a history book.
Right on Michigan Avenue on the Mag mile. The only thing I wish was that I had know of this hotel before.
STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE

from A TripAdvisor MemberFrom the moment you step off the elevator and are greeted by the atrocious wallpaper to the pale-dirty yellow walls & carpeting of the rooms, everything seems gaudy in a Circus-Circus sort of way. The bed's comforter (gold with yellow polka dots) was adorned with a faded/dirty white throw pillow. In front of the small, scatched wooden desk was a (yellow) fake leather chair with pen marks. The toilet? institutional-style flush leaver in the back. The air conditioning was loud but ineffective. The only thing remotely nice was the sink. I have no idea why anyone would pay what they charge to stay here, I was on expense acct and almost left. What are they thinking?
Perfect location
from malykoGreat location - average room
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel itself was alright. I stayed at the non-historical section of the hotel. My first impression was that it looked a little old and dull - but the finer details of the room eventually emerged after the first few hours. The room was on the small side, but the King bed was lovely and so was the relatively recent refurbished bathroom.
The wireless internet access was also very good, and was not too pricy - USD 10 a day.
I guess the only compliant that I have is that the door and wall were not soundproof at all. I could hear the morning call of the room next door at 5am one morning, followed by the neighbours' bathroom activities, then the banging of the door as they left their room, then the lift arriving and its bell... and half an hour later, these people returned - so first there was the ding telling me a lift would be stopping, then the neighbours walking back to their rooms, then the door slam, then them chatting in the room... I expected an InterContinental Hotel to have better soundproofing system than this.
It's worthwhile checking out the historical section if you are not staying there. Quite impressive.
Overall, the room was probably just above average, but the location more than compensate it!
Lovely place. Lots of hassles.
from A TripAdvisor MemberAnyhow....upon our arrival at 8pm, we were told that our room still wasn't ready to be occupied by us. A bit alarming, considering that check-out time is at NOON! They offered us some free drinks in the bar while we waited, but unfortunately that wouldn't work for us as we were meeting friends for dinner and needed to get into our room to get ready. We were then told that we could check in, and that we had been given an upgrade. Some upgrade! It turned out to be a regular room, not the suite that we had booked and paid for. Phone calls and visits to the front desk to straighten this out ensued, and one hour later we were finally given a suite (with another upgrade), and it was just gorgeous! 41st floor, beautiful windows and views.
More negatives: Fred, who is a front desk clerk, is borderline rude and not helpful at all.
There is also a strange spider population in the historic tower. There were about 20 large, black spiders hanging around outside of EACH window, which made looking outside a somewhat creepy experience. There were also at least 2 smaller spiders joining us as guests in the suite. Definitely not for anyone who is an arachnophobe!
Most likely would never stay there again, although it is a beautiful place.
InterContinental Hotel--like staying on Fifth Ave near Rockefeller Center!
from amilysmoms day at the Chicago Intercontinental! 5 stars.

celebration time Be cautious about the cab company that you choose. There is a definite difference in the charging of fares.
Bundle Up! Chicago is obviously known for it's cold winters but, to me, that's part of the appeal of the city. The city is very very walkable and navigable but you have to bundle up and protect those extremeties! I'm not much of a hat person but I could only make it about one block before putting one on. Gloves, scarves, and hats are a must for touring this city in the winter. You sort of feel like you're coming in from a ski lodge when you arrive at your destination but better safe than sorry!
Chicago art institute It's a nice walk to the art museum. Go see La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat-it is sublime. If you are going soon, there is also a great Cezanne to Picasso exhibition on (ends in Spring 2007)
