We purchased two rooms at the Hilton, as we were planning on attending the Taste of Chicago with some friends. We had a late start leaving Milwaukee, and did not arrive at the hotel until around 10:30pm. According to the information that we were given from Priceline, we were guaranteed a late check-in. When we arrived, there was some big event being held at the hotel and it took quite a bit of time for us to get to the check-in counter. Once we were finally helped (about a half hour later), we were told that there were no rooms available, even though we had reservations and had paid in advance. We asked for a manager, and he told us that Priceline customers are not priority and had we arrived sooner we may have gotten a room. I've used Priceline many times before at various hotels and not once have I ever been told that I wasn't a priority because I received a discount! We were absolutely floored. The manager later retracted his statement and said that there were rooms available, but we would have to wait about an hour for them to be cleaned. That would have been around midnight. My fiance went back and forth with him about how much of an inconvenience this was, and he eventually sent us to the Embassy Suites downtown instead. He also assured us that we would be receiving a letter in the mail to come back to stay with them for free, which we have gotten, but I'm not so sure that I'd be willing to go back there, even if it is for free.

At least some of you got to actually see the rooms....we never even got that far.

Hit or miss.

Sometimes this hotel is fabulous - quick, friendly service, great room, speedy room service.

And sometimes...well, it just isn't.

We live in the 'burbs but often have weekend functions downtown so I've stayed here a lot. First of all, forget about getting a decent, reasonably priced breakfast here. The breakfast options are limited and generally of low quality. Many of the rooms are very nice...but I've also been in ones that are terrible - in need of updating, repairs, and located in very noisy areas of the hotel. I once asked to be changed from a room which was located at the entrance to the pool (across from maid service & vending to make it even better!) - and it took 90 minutes, about 6 phone calls, and lots of irritation before they moved me to a room which had seen better days. Avoid it on holiday weekends where the staff is stretched way too thin - one time we went down to the vallet after trying to call ahead for our car and receiving a busy signal for about 30 minutes only to find they had taken the phone off the hook because too many people were calling. Then, had to wait another 30 minutes for our vehicle.

I think there are a lot of hotels in the price range, and cheaper which offer a more consistent experience.

Stay here if you can

This is the place in Chicago to experience at least once.....it is a grand hotel. From the beautifully decorated lobby to the wonderful rooms (most with two bathrooms!), you will know why folks want to stay here. Good food, (especially the breakfasts) good room service, good beds, just an all around nice place. I love the Hilton/Chicago!

What a great stay

The Chicago Hilton and Towers is always a great place to stay. Great service, accessiblity and super amenities. My favorite room is the two bathroom double in the Executive Towers. Always a great view of Grant Park and the Lake, it truly is a Chicago Landmark. Super shuttle to all shopping up the Avenue, great room service. Worth the stay.

Not for the budget conscious

We booked this hotel through Priceline.com, I was totally excited when I got this hotel for only $75. per night. Well, the staff is friendly and helpful...Donald at the concierge desk helped us to find some great places to visit. The night before our arrival, we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Calumet, there we had a fridge and a microwave, and an indoor pool, and the most wonderful FREE breakfast for my whole family. At the Hilton and Towers, you get NOTHING but your room, when we checked in, we were told we didn't have a room with a view, but for $25. more per night, we could have one! They weren't kidding either, our room was in one of the alcoves, we had a view of the brick hotel, it was as if we were viewing our room though a mirror! NO VIEW at all! This was disappointing, the room was tiny, barely enough room to walk around the beds. Because we purchased our room on Priceline, and not with our credit card, we had no mini bar privledges, which was a tiny little tv stand that was locked and had a 12x12 inch fridge, that was LOCKED! You couldn't use it. We were here for 5 nights and no where to put any food or soda pop to keep it cool!!!! They have pop machines in the hall, but a soda will cost you $2.00. The snacks in the mini bar were utterly outrageously priced, eg; a standard size bag of M & M's was $3.00!!! Room service is offered, a club sandwich is $11.25, plus a 15% gratuity charge, plus a $3.75 delivery charge, plus a standard 9.75% tax!!! It cost us $35. for valet parking per night. This was not a hotel for families, we could have easily spent $100. just for lunch. The hotel itself IS beautiful inside and out, the pool is awesome. I won't stay at this hotel again with my family, I would stay again if it were just my husband and myself.

a super place

Stayed here in March for a wedding reception. Check in desk very accomodating and quick. only 1 of 3 rooms was ready, and the one room was still occupied. However, the staff very quickly reassigned us to another room, and gave us 2 passes for breakfast at the hotel resturant for the inconvience . Rooms were not hugh, but having 2 bathrooms made up for that. Decor was very nice. The heat was still on, and we were unable to turn it off. Air conditioning was not on at all, and had to leave the windows open to get comfortable. The ballroom was beautiful- staff excellent! Lots of areas to sit and talk around hotel. Bar was ok--pretty noisy though. Easy check out. Parking expensive-$34.00 , but for downtown Chicago, not unusual. Lots of wonderful spots for picture taking which was important for the occassion. Price was at a discount, but usually much higher. Probably wouldn't stay here if just sightseeing, but was great for a special occasion.

Friendly Staff

First let me say this hotel does not have the atmospher families! Not because of the hotel, but because of the normal clientele. We were snubbed by many guests. However, our large family was treated like royalty during our five day stay by the wonderful hotel staff. All the way from the registration desk personnel to the valet parking. My husband was attending a five day convention and decided to bring us along. Two weeks prior we tried to get two adjoining rooms but all of the rooms were booked. We succeeding in getting two adjoining rooms through hotels. However, booking through hotels was a nightmare. We ended up with one room for the remaining days. We decided to go ahead and proceed with the trip and take a leap of faith that Hilton would accomodate us. Not only did they accomodate us without whining and complaining, they found us two adjoining rooms with a lake view at $109 per room per night!!!!!The staff was very friendly and respectful our entire stay, and housekeeping showed up on the clock every morning to pick up after our very messy crowd. One huge word of caution.....If you are planning to stay anywhere in downtown Chicago and you are a large familiy bring your own food. It is impossible to find parking anywhere in the city, especially if you have a large vehicle, and if you do find parking you'll end up paying $14.00 or more for one hour.We walked everywhere. The Hilton is about 1 mile walking distance to the Shedd Acquarium, Planetarium, and Field Museum, and the city has a one year old walkway that you can take all the way from Grant Park to the museums with only having to cross Michigan Avenue. The walkway goes underneath Columbus and Lake Shore Drive. Also, beware of beggers. We got hit up twice. Either bring spare change with you or be prepared to be strong.I walked with six kids to the museums and despite the beggars, I felt safe.About the Hilton pool.......It seems to be little dirty. The water appears to have grease laying on the top of it. I don't know what caused it, but the chlorine smell was particularly strong. We all swam, however, and know one picked anything up.

Great rooms, boring restaurants

from dalangdon
I stayed in this hotel recently, and was very impressed by the front lobby and ballrooms. My room was also quite pleasant. But the restaurants and registration areas were strangely bland and formulaic.
This is undoubtedly due to the convention nature of the hotel, but I was still disappointed to note that such an obviously historic hotel was lacking any distinctive bars and restaurants.

With that said, this is a very clean and attractive hotel with a great staff. Upper level rooms have amazing views of both the lake and city.
This is an excellent choice for either convention or business travel.

This hotel was great.

I stayed at this hotel over the weekend of the Chicago Bears Fan Convention (Feb 27- March 1). The hotel is beautiful. I had a Towers room. I had a decent view of the city (Sears Tower). The room was a little small but had two bathrooms (1 King bed). The Tower room has it's own registration area and comes with a free continental breakfast, evening snacks and free sodas throughout the day. The registration/ lounge is on the 24th floor and overlooks Lake Michigan. The hotel was full but service was excellent. The location is convenient but there are a number of homeless people within a block or two (especially toward the El train). We loved our stay at this hotel and never had to take a cab or rent a car. I will stay here again. Hilton offered a Sunday night free on their website with a 3 day stay. This made the cost reasonable (for Chicago). However, the Pavilion restaurant left a lot to be desired. The pub on the first floor was a good place to hang out and have a drink.

Great Stay

I stayed in the hotel for a week, and had a great stay the staff was helpful and courteous. The only problems I saw were that the television was too small and the Internet access was poor. I would and will stay in this hotel again.

Top Local Tips for Chicago

magnificient mile unless you,ve a visa card this shopping street is only for the rich and famous

Need a place for brunch? Stop at Yolk We really enjoyed eating at Yolk - 1120 S. Michigan. It was a wonderful breakfast/brunch menu - so many options, so little time! The walk from Yolks to the aquarium or Field museum takes about 10 minutes.

Getting Into Frnotera Grill You can't make a reservation for small parties at the Frontera Grill, except for sometimes early (8:30 am) the day you wish to dine, but if you line up about 45 minutes before they open for dinner, you will have a good chance of snagging a talbe. We did and were we glad. The flavor combos were outstanding.
