Great Hotel for the Price
from A TripAdvisor MemberFairmont: European Dream
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe decor is very beautiful, with a very classical antique flavor. Our party was in the Moulin Rouge room. The food was fabulous, the service was outstanding. I personally worked on planning this party with the staff and they were a joy to work with.
The rooms were beautiful with great views, comfortable beds, and impecable cleanliness throughout.
The restaurant and lobby bar were also great.
The only down side was that during the party, I walked by an antique iron table that ripped my pants. I was very upset because they were brand new for the party.
When I complained, they handed me cash for what I paid for them. Their only request was that I give them the pants. I thought that this was extremely odd, and suggested that a photo be taken instead. After their insistance, I ultimately gave in since I new I would never wear them again.
All in all, I really loved the Fairmont Chicago
Very good value
from f95kaiThe service, including the concierge, was impeccable from then on.
However, the standard of the room furnishings and bathroom aplliances is not up to the standard of the Fairmont in Boston, not by a long shot.
The fact that the location is not right on Michigan Ave, which is were most complainers want to be for whatever reason, is really absurd, it wouldn´t hurt most people to take the nice walk along the river to get where they need to be. Besides, it´s hard to get such a nice view elsewhere...
Average at Best.
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe decor is very worn and dated so don't expect "beautiful" once you pass the lobby. The furniture is probably 25 years old and downright hideous is quality and aesthetics. The carpet was torn, the switchplates and outlet covers were rusty and the paint was scuffed and stained. The mini-bar was so moldy, no one wanted any of the contents. Do they even have a maintenance crew?
I won't return. On a scale from 1-10, I would give it a 5. Sorry, Fairmont!
my first choice in Chicago
from A TripAdvisor MemberWith a recent stay last weekend, probably my fourth or fifth in the Fairmont, I'd have to say it's become my number 1 choice in Chicago. It's a top quality hotel (on par with the InterContinental, Wyndham, or a Sheraton), and you can count on things being well handled, well done, and well whatever-else-you-can-think-of. The rooms have a quiet warmth that feels right--a little more like home than some hotels of this class--and the "quiet" is not just an emotional metaphor, as the rooms are very sound resistant. (I have never had my sleep disturbed at this hotel, and noise is something I'm kind of picky about in a hotel). They also have terrific coffee for room service--some of the best I've ever had--so the $15 charge for a large pot (including tax and room service fee) is almost worth it. Also, the Fairmont has one of the best valet parking deals in Chicago--check the website because these things seem to fluctuate at many hotels--but I've typically paid only about $25 for parking with in and out privileges there (the Fairmont has a large garage below it). To a midwestern non-big-city person like me this at first seems like a rip off, but then you see that many hotels (like the Wyndam) charge $38 a night (yikes!). My only complaint about the Fairmont would be the $1.50 charge for local phone and the $10-12 fee for internet use, but these are also typical of almost any downtown Chicago hotel.
Last but not least you can often get a decent deal at the Fairmont--I paid $120 for my last stay--although this varies. Check Expedia to get the general prices and compare with other hotels, then book the room at the actual Fairmont website (you will get a much better cancellation policy this way). If I can't get a deal at the Fairmont, I always check the Swissotel, the InterContinental, the Wyndham, and the Fairfield Inn downtown. If you're reserving a couple weeks in advance, you can usually get something reasonable (around $120/night) at one of these hotels and they are all safe, pleasant, and quiet places that do things right.
Of these, the Fairfield Inn isn't really the same class of hotel--it's a notch or two down from the others (think Courtyard by Marriott or a nice Holiday Inn Express) but it's very new, well run and pleasant. The Swissotel has great lake views and probably the friendliest staff. The InterContinental is the snazziest of the four and is right on Michigan Ave. (so not as quiet). The Wyndham is a little below the InterContinental or Swiss in my book (e.g., the room service coffee is just ok, the doors are less heavy and let in a little more noise, that sort of thing) but is still a good hotel with a great location. If you want to do Michigan Ave shopping, the Swiss and Fairmont are a little off center for you (4 blocks to edge of shopping area) whereas the others are 2 blocks to the center of the shopping area, but unless it's dead winter, the 5-10 minute walk is pleasant.
Enjoy Chicago!

Getting there We used google maps, you will have a hard time finding the place. It is easiest to access it from michigan ave.
Amazing theater all over town Many theaters are in walking distance of the Fairmont. Good ones to check out are The Goodman, the Oriental, and the Chicago theater. You can find out what is playing at Metromix.com.
Always Ask What Parking Will Cost Parking is apparently never included in the rate, is under separate management, and the hotels typically feel no shame in not telling you it will cost you bucks up per day to park your car. Always ask. The rate may influence how much you are willing to pay the hotel to park your self.
