I thought the service was excellent and the location was great. The beds were most comfortable and the rooms had free internet access and coffee makers in the room. flat screen tvs and great shower heads.

My wife and I have stayed at the Cass Hotel several times. The hotel's location is excellent: easy walking distance to the Magnificent Mile. The rooms are old but clean.
If you stayed in this hotel in the 1940's you wouldn't have any trouble recognizing it today. The tile in the bathroom, the carpet, the fixtures, are all old. The staff is friendly and helpful. The bar is small, reasonable and great for people watching. Ditto for the diner. As noted by other reviewers, the towels are thin and they can be threadbare. But, if you want a clean, bargain priced hotel in a great location, this is it.

This is a budget hotel located in the heart of the near northside restaurant/entertainment/shopping area and about a 10-15 minute walk from the loop. Rooms are small but clean, staff is friendly, and it draws an international clientele, both young and old. We have stayed at the Cass several times both on business and on vacation.

Best value small hotel

We thought the location of the Cass Hotel ideal because we could walk to nearly all the places of interest we wished to see and were close to public transport for others. Because of its central location in a major city, we considered the Cass excellent value for money. The room was perfectly clean, serviced thoroughly daily, had sufficient storage space and the bed was comfortable. The room was a reasonable size, as was the bathroom (towels a bit on the thin side). At reception we were always treated with courtesy and efficiency and there was a safety deposit box available there, which was important to us as we had just arrived for a four week holiday in the States and were carrying travellers cheques and passports. For visitors who are out all day sightseeing, I don't think you could beat this hotel for convenience or value. Our only quibble would be with the breakfast and the limited space in which it was served butit was not a problem as there were numerous restaurants a stone's throw away where one could breakfast in comfort. All in all we think the Cass, which is practically in the heart of Chicago, must be the best value small hotel it is possible to find. We salute them!

We loved every moment we spent there

We have stayed at many hotels in all parts of the world. For security sake in strange places, we have had to stay in three, for and even 5 star accomodation. But this expenditure has often meant that our trips are fewer than we would wish. Then rhere was that wondrous visit to Chicago.... one of the lovliest cities in the world and certainly the most friendly. But what would it have been without our ""Home from Home""... the Cass Hotel! We loved every moment we spent there...Comfy rooms, totally relaxed atmosphere, lovely happy breakfasts downnstairs each morning, it was an important part of one of the happiest journies of our lives.... If we ever get accross the broad Atlantic again... let it be to Chicago and to thadear Cass!. We have told everyone, especially American friends. To our Ffriends here in Ireland, we simply say.. its around the corner from Fitzpatricks at quarter the price. Well done Cass, we shall never forget you...

The location was good, within easy walking distance of the Navy Pier and shopping. The breakfast room staff were friendly and helpful, the bar was OK. The room was very basic, but adequate for us as we didin't intend to spend much time in it. Hotel is very good as a base for exploring Chicago, but wouldn't recommend it to those who like a little luxury and to spend time relaxing in their hotel room. We would stay there again.

The hotel in the centre of Chicago, and because of the low cost per night you would expect it to be of minor quality. The opposite is true. The rooms are in a very good condition, they are clean, everything is working ok and you have all you need.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Cass Hotel

Good, basic accommodation.

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the Cass Hotel, October 2003. Very clean spacious room.
Fridge, TV, large bathroom. Very close to all amenities. Plenty of restaurants in the vicinity. Only critisisms were that the towels, though clean, were thin, and one of the guys on reception lacked people skills. Rather gruff. Very reasonably priced for its position. Good basic accommodation.

Value for money

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Chicago Cass Hotel at the beginning of June for three nights. It's just good value for money, try staying in a reasonable hotel in the center of Chicago for less, you won't find it! The rooms are clean, have a TV, private bathroom and enaugh space. The view can be spectacular. The location of the hotel is excellent, in between the shops in the north and the loop downtown, all in walking distance! The staff was quite friendly, the one-day complementary breakfast (USD 1.99 value) is ok for one day, but they serve other foods in their Diner style breakfast restaurant as well. Good hotel for ecenomical travellers who want the comfort and privacy of a real hotel.

better than Cass Corridor but less than a box

from A TripAdvisor Member
As stated in my title, the hotel was a delightful upgrade from the Detroit Cass Corridor however fell second to a Refrigerator Box I could have slept in. The room nay floor reeked of stale weed, not the friendly type you pull from your garden. Our room overlooked a delightful trash receptical the size of a small army tank. I killed a bug the size of my thumb the first ten minutes we were there. Lastly, the place was filthy, rooms, lobby, employees, patrons alike.... if you're poor, there is a nice hostel just outside of the city, take a cab in.

Best everyday value in downtown Chicago

A quiet clean hotel with a friendly staff.

Enjpoyed my stay emensely

from A TripAdvisor Member
I enjoyed my stay at the Cass Hotel located near many major Chicago attractions especially Micvhigan Avenue shops and museums. The rooms were clean and fresh and the staff was courteous, if not down right helpful. And the price! There is not a better hotel value in the city and I have stayed at several so called luxury hotels. I recommend the Cass Hotel to all my friends on a budget who visit Chicago.

The best downtown Chicago value

from A TripAdvisor Member
The best value for a downtown Chicago hotel! I travel to Chicago about 5-6 times a year on business. My expenses are paid by myself-not by an employer-so price is a very most important factor. If you search the web you will find low priced hotels in the downtown area going for between $95 and $120, if you are lucky. Here at the Cass I pay $64.95-without the trouble of searching around. Sure, it isn't fancy, but its clean, friendly, and has a great locaction.

Very Satisfied

from A TripAdvisor Member
June 5 and 6, my 4 year old son and I stayed at the Cass Hotel. Our room was clean, the beds were made, the towels were clean and plentiful. Our room was quiet and the rate was reasonable. They had a breakfast cafe and a laundry room. The staff was friendly. We will stay at Cass again in the future.

Horrible Dive Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here one horrible night. Dingy, dirty and shady hotel. Towels were nasty: dark, dingy and smelly. Beds were ancient, and prostitutes roamed the lounge. It reminded me more of a European hostel than a hotel in the downtown region of a city as nice as Chicago. It's worth a few extra bucks to stay somewhere else.

Great Hotel-Great Price-Great Location-Great City

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was my first trip back to Chicago after 30 years and my wife's first. We wanted to stay downtown but also wanted money left over so we can enjoy our vacation. The Cass Hotel was it! Only a block away from State Street, it is centrally located to almost anywhere (since bus stops are less than a block away). You can also walk to the El, walk to the ESPN zone, which is only about a block away, walk to many fascinating shops and restaurants (I recommend the Weber Grill -their plates are large enough for two to eat from AND have leftovers). The Cass hotel has small rooms but very cozy and comfortable. We came to Chicago to see the city not stay in our hotel. From out 16th story window you can see the hustle and bustle of the city. The staff was very friendly. The Cass has a small cafe where you can enjoy a $1.95 breakfast (which includes toast, muffin or bagel, coffee, tea or hot chocolate, and a glass of chilled juice). And on your day of departure, they will hold your bags for you (checkout time is noon but our train did not leave until after 5) - this gave us an entire bonus day practically to see the city. The Cass has elevators, key-card door locks, and very quiet during the night. After you come back to your hotel after a long day of sightseeing you can watch TV with over 50 channels. We will definately stay at the Cass again - it's the only way to fly. And to boot, Sammy Sosa hit home run for us at our day at the ball park.

Dish out a few extra bucks and stay elsewhere

from A TripAdvisor Member
This place looks acceptable on the Internet. Then you pull up to the front of the building and realize why it was so cheap. Then you go in your room and wonder if the beds and towels are clean. I'm sorry that no one else has said this but this place is a total dive. Some of the guests just look shady, all of the public areas smell like body odor, and the room I stayed in hadn't been remodeled and it was just....dirty. The only good thing about this hotel is the location and all the stories you will have to tell people about staying in a "rooms by the hour" type of joint. I went with a group of college friends and I wasn't expecting much, but you just don't feel clean while you are there. They should take the 'C' out of Hotel Cass for a more appropriate name.
