Historical Traveller Reviews of The Westin Maui Resort and Spa Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Westin Maui from July 7-13, for our honeymoon. I agree with the previous reviewer that this hotel is great for families, but it is a horrible place for a honeymoon. Do not stay at this hotel during School Breaks, you will truly regret it, especially if you are the type of person that likes to relax with your significant other in a nice atmosphere without other peoples screaming children running around, water slides, scuba lessons in the pool, not enough beach chairs for everyone because the 5 yrs olds get a chair too..The pool is a childrens wonderland(the Hyatt is even worse) IF YOU BELIEVE IT.Granted it is not the resorts fault, or the peoples fault for being there with kids, but I feel it is my duty to inform couples of this issue before they book. Honestly, the resort is nothing to write home about, a bit run down, nothing to really be impressed by, the rooms are so small, it is very difficult to get ready for dinner in such small quarters and for $300.00 a night. I think its a small place for all the people it accommodates. The open areas (hallways) even outside by the restaurants are crammed up, not spacey, not what you expect from an expensive hotel. I dont know why people dont tell the truth about these places, maybe they have never been anywhere better. Hawaii in general is nothing great, noone ever told me that before, until I came back and started telling people that all the hotels are run doen and ugly, small and kid infested, the islands are so commercial, way worse than Cancun, restaurants are located in strip malls, and you dont get and island feeling, you never receive a lay when you arrive at hotels, (If you want a lay, you have to pay 10-15 dollars for one at the hotel restaurants) no hula dancers, no cute hula outfits, people are rude and just want to get the job finished, slow service everywhere especially at the Westin, If you eat at ONO for lunch, the poolside restaurant, expect to be sitting there for 45 minutes before getting served your sandwich. I was not impressed at all with Maui. It might have been nice a while ago, but it is not too nice now not for traveling 8 hrs to get threre The food was very bland at all the restaurants, Tropica was terrible, and by the way, it is very very windy in Maui in the evening. Stay away from the Westin, Its a Family Resort, unless you have screamimg toddlers and beachballs, and floaties, and teenagers, oh the teenagers walking arould the pool all day and playing chicken fights in the pool, who can forget them.. Overall I would not recommend this place its much worse that the internet pictures show it to be and much much smaller. Look up the Westin Regina in Cabo San Lucas for your honeymoon.. now thats an amazing place. Do not spend the $$$$$ to go to Maui or definitely not the Westin We spent $8,000 there in 10days, and it was NOT worth it, I want to help others not make the same mistake. Maui is VERY expensive.. Much more expensive than you would ever think. I hope this review helps someone. Chanti and Antonio from Chicago.

Westin Maui, Great for Families

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed for one week at the Westin Maui (July 29-August 6, 2003). We were very pleased with the Hotel because of the property's location, atmosphere, and friendly staff. As a family with two kids (12, 9), the hotel pools were a big hit. The hotel is well located on the Kaanapali Beach area, right next door to the Whaler's Village. We booked a Golf/Mountain Room and were upgraded to a Partial Ocean View Room. If you plan on staying in your room for a lot of your time (not likely), the knock on this room was that it has no closet. We had read in previous reviews that the rooms were on the smallish side, but we did not know what that really meant. Now we know. You should request the Beach Tower instead of the Ocean Tower. It's newer and I think has closets in the rooms. The food at the restaurants was good. The Westin is clearly the best value in the Kaannapali area (Hyatt and Sheraton are run down). Beware of the timeshare sales staff (called Vacation Services) seemingly at all hotels in this area. We used a private concierge service (E-mail:, who was fantastic at arranging great activities. She was better than any hotel staff. Have a great time.

Pleasant Stay in Paradise

Tripadvisor has been invaluable to me when deciding where to vacation.
So here is my contribution. The first week of July we spent 3 nights at the Westin on Ka'anapali beach. The hotel and grounds were very nice and very clean. The room is a little on the small side but clean. And that is truly "Heavenly"! The best hotel bed I have slept on.
We had a partial ocean view which meant it was on the lower 407. It faced the ocean but since it was on the lower floors, the ocean was partially blocked by other things on the grounds... waterfall, river, foliage, other rooms. We had a room that had a view of the waterfall but the noise from it did not suit me. I would prefer to hear the ocean but it is not possible at this hotel with the waterfall and river that runs through the entire property?!
The staff moved me immediately to the other side of the hotel.
Unfortunately, we went from the waterfall to the river which was equally noisy. Fortunately, the sliding door and drapes kept out alot of the noise. The pools are extremely nice. The adult pool is quiet and peaceful and the big pool has a slides, waterfalls, and a grotto!
Poolside service at the Beach bar is readily available. We really enjoyed the pools!! We had the breakfast buffet one morning at the Ono Surf Grill. It was expensive ($23.00pp) but very good. Whaler's Village is right next door so its a quick walk. They have everything in Whaler's Village. Even a Tiffany's?! We had tasty pizza at a ice cream/pizza place. The Hula Grill is good. We had a lovely dinner and a nice lunch. We went to the Hyatt's luau since we couldn't get in at the "Old Lahaina " luau. Even though it rained, we still had a good time.
Maui Tacos are highly recommened!! Ka"anapali is very developed and expensive but everything is close and within walking distance once you get to your hotel. Everyone we dealt with was extremely friendly and accomodating. We did not experience any arrogance or unfriendly people others have noted about Maui. We also spent 3 nights at Napili and prefer it to the crowds at Ka"anapali. See my review of the Mauiian.
Overall our stay was a very pleasant one in Paradise. We are already planning our next visit. The Westin in a good property with only a few faults for those we don't mind the hustle and bustle. Next time we will spend most of our time in Napili and Kapalua. The road a little less traveled! Sonya and Alti

Superb Vacation Resort

Superb resort. The Westin Maui is the hotel to stay in while in Ka'anapali. The rooms are small, but the layout of the resort, with it's 87,000 sqf of pools make up for it. The pink flamingo's outside the check in desk are awesome!.

It's location is also by far the best in the area. Whalers Village, is a mere 2 mins walk from the resort, the shopping complex houses Mcdonalds, Pizza Parlours, Rusty's Harpoon Bar etc amongst other shopping shops. Black Rock (located 10 mins walk at the Sheraton Maui) is the best place to go snorkeling on this beach.

send me an email with your questions and I'll be more than happy to help your trip a great one!.

Westin Maui A Must Go!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Westin Maui was a perfect family vacation for us! The Westin was a spectacular hotel. It definitely deserves five stars! The kids spent a lot of time enjoying the pool slide, water basketball, and water volleyball at the Westin. The kids loved the Keiki Camp--the on site Westin camp for kids. My husband and I spent quality time together while the kids absolutely enjoyed themselves. Everyone at the Westin catered to our every need. We all truly enjoyed our stay at the Westin Maui! The Westin Maui is a must go!

Loved bodysurfing

from familyforme
We loved the Westin Maui. The surf was a few steps away and my family bodysurfed daily. Good waves. The room was comfortable and beds were cozy. Kids camp was great. After going once, my son wanted to go back the next day and night. We walked on the boardwalk nightly up and down from Sheraton to Hyatt- we are in the middle. Whalers villiage right next door was a plus. Went shopping whenever we felt like it. Great shops and restaurants- Hula Grill and a great bathing suit shop were our favorites. Also the inexpensive food court was appreciated. My kids only wanted to stay right in front of our hotel to body surf. But we would walk to Sheraton to snorkel. Food at Onos was ok. Tropica had good steak and lobster. We went most every morning to breakfast outside in front of lobby-muffins, juice, coffee that you could take to your room. Loved the musician at the ono restaurant in evening. My only complaints were that the sound of fountains overshadowed the ocean waves and the only jacuzzi was in the adult pool-no kids. We definitely found the perfect hotel for our family.

Spent the second half of our honeymoon here and we're very glad that we did. The Westin was everything we expected and more. The room, while a bit on the small side, was furnished to a high quality and had everything you could need. All the staff were friendly, helpful and were plentiful enough that there was very little waiting involved. The adult only pool was a nice touch for a bit more calm, and although we didn't have a chance to do so, the use of the other hotels facilities (including breakfast) would ensure that you have enough variety during your stay. I had no problem with paying the extra daily rate but think it should be added to the room rate up front. The Ka'anapali golf courses were also excellent and the clubhouse service was exemplary. To finish our trip off the Hyatt Lu'au was a great night out. If I didn't have to work we would be back there tomorrow.

Nice resort but not kid friendly

from A TripAdvisor Member
Beautiful Hotel and Grounds. Majority of staff is helpful and pleasant. Rooms are too small, difficult for a family of 4. Balconies are very unsafe for toddlers. Grounds are beautiful but not accomodating for handicapped or small children (lots of stairs around pools, slippery rock etc.). I would have liked to have a childrens pool. Resort fee outrageous - supposed to include free beach chairs but there were only 24 chairs total for the entire hotel! (Good news is that you can use the Sheratons pool and beach as they are both Starwood, nicer beach for swimming and better pool with kid friendly water slides) Food is expensive but very good, The waiters at Tropica are rude. Eat at the Hula Grill in whalers village instead.

Great Hotel

from sushi4soup
Just got back from the Westin. It was great! Yes, the rooms are small. We asked for the largest room in our price category and ended up with a free upgrade. Yes, there is a $13/day resort fee. I haven't been to a resort yet that doesn't charge it - so I expect it. It covers parking, which can run $15/day at other hotels. The location can't be beat - food, shopping right next door. Great beach. The kids lived in the pools which connect with slides and grottoes.

Way to Go Starwood!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Westin has done a wonderful job combining the natural beauty of Maui and the modern conveniences that you come to expect from a Starwood resort at this property. From the unbelievably landscaped 12-acre pool & waterfall area to one of the best locations on Maui's famous Ka'anapali beach, this hotel has everything. Food tips? The breakfast buffet at the pool-side restaurant is AMAZING...let's just say this. If any breakfast was ever worth $19.95 per person, this is it. The Tropica restaurant has a great beach-side location, although I thought that the food was on the bland side given it's lavish presentation. One of the most underrated parts of the hotel experience is Westin's "Heavenly Bed". This is the first hotel bed that I've WANTED to sleep in. It's that comfortable. :-) All of these reasons will keep me coming back to this location, but the great bed will ensure that my next vacation includes a Westin property.

Top Local Tips for Lahaina

Save your money There are many beautiful hotels in Maui...Seek out those that treat you well

Luau The Old Lahania Luau was phenomenal !!!! The food and show was well worth the money. The Drums of the Pacific Luau was just ok. Food was so-so, drinks were not top shelf and show was ok. The only highlight of the show was the Fire Dancer at the end. He was awesome !!! But Old Lahania Luau is better bang for your buck!

Dining in Lahaina Our favorite restaurant was the Fish Co. in Lahain. Both steaks and fish were great.
