Sheraton Maui Needs major Overhaul

After spending 4 great nights at the Starwood managed Princeville Resort in Kauai, we didn't expect the Sheraton Maui to be 5 star caliber. But, we didn't expect a "motorlodge" atmosphere either. The first indication was the vinyl tile leading from the parking garage to the front desk area. The main lobby was average. The view from our room was nice. The walls in the halls were quite dirty and the room was outdated and not very clean. I didn't get the 4 star (as advertised by Expedia) feeling. The pool was nice, but, you had to pay $15 a day for the chairs at the beach. Nobody came around and served drinks...etc.
The grounds were halfway decent. Looking at the fellow guests, I thought there had to be a poolside tattoo parlour. For $350 a night I expected more. Well, I got it. We checked out early and went to the Hyatt a few doors down for $275 a night. Big difference. Very classy.
Excellent staff. Everything included in price (beach chairs, etc..) Overall great atmosphere. If you feel most comfortable with a NASCAR crowd....by all means stay at the Sheraton. If you want to get away and enjoy a true classy environment...go to the Hyatt. Its hard to believe that Starwood runs both hotels.

Beautiful but expensive!

In truth the Island is so beautiful that you could probably stay in any hotel and still have a great holiday but I say if you're gonna go for it then go for it! Hotel was fantastic. The rooms and facilities were all well above average. Restaurant was excellant, if a little pricey but the service there and room service couldn't be faulted. Everyone there is keen to help and nothing is too much trouble. Checking in and out were very quick but, in truth, trying to get a cab when you need one is not great. Just make sure you dont leave it till the last minute to get one! It was out second time there and I'd definately go back.

Sheraton Maui gets a thumbs up!

Upon checking into the Sheraton Maui, I was thinking about writing a negative review. Being a Starwood member we were "upgraded" from an Ocean Front room to a "Deluxe Ocean Front Room." Building 6 facing the water but ground level that didn't allow us to keep curtains open to admire view. My wife was reluctant to take her shoes off because the rug had stains and hadn't seen a carpet cleaner in quite awhile. The following morning I went to the front dest and informed them of my displeasure with the shape of the carpet. "May" immediately apologized to me and had us transferred to a fabulous room.As for the Sheraton, if you are in Building 5 or 6 it is a nightmare to get to the beach (3 elevators in our case). The way to the beach is poorly marked. We helped a few newcomers by pointing them in the right direction. Once you get there however, the beach is the best on Kaanapali. I snorkelled at Black Rock and saw a 300 pound sea turtle 150 feet off of the beach. Snorkelling at Black Rock was better than Molokini. I would tell everone to save your money and not take the trip to Molokini. It is too crowded, filled with BBQ smoke from boats cooking lunch and just not a good snorkeling place (probably because of the crowds!!).Bike riding down Haleakala volcano was a blast. Be prepared for a 1:20am pickup at your hotel. You arrive at the top of the volcano at 4:30am and sit around for 75 minutes waiting for sunrise. AT 4:30am the sky looked like a planetarium! More stars than you ever thought were imaginable! As sunrise got closer the weather turned worse! Clouds and rain moved in and the crater disappeared in the fog. Finally the bike ride. 4 different biking companies, they rotate on a 3 month basis who gets to go first. If you pick the wrong company, you can be on the volcano for up to 2 more hours waiting to get down. Bike ride would be better if they let you turn it loose a little bit. Instead the pace is set by the slowest cyclist in your group. One bad rider made our ride the equivalent of a horse ride (the one where the horse seems hypnotized to follow the horse in front of him and not listen to any of your commands.)Restaurants: Momma's Fish House is really fantastic! It is super expensive ($20 for appetizers and $30-35 for entrees; soup $15) My wife and I spent $152.00 for lunch. The food was outstanding however. Roy's Nicolina was disappointing! Food was just OK and server was just "too much." Too much unsolicited information!! For cheap eats, "Maui Tacos" were a pleasant surprise.Maui has earned a return visit from us and the Sheraton (simply for location) the same.

Ugly expensive place with bad service

This is a trap! First of all it was not cheap and you do not get what you pay for. The hotel is old and not well looked after. The room is ugly the towels are worn out; the cover on the bed had stains. Everything is so dirty from the gym to the restaurant. Be careful of the resort fee, which is $12 on top of the rate and doesn't even include the beach chairs. To go to the beach in front of the hotel you have to pay $15 bucks a day so you don't sit directly on the sand. Everything you want to do is extra! The service is terrible. Better to stay at a cheaper hotel and visit the beach at the Sheraton.

Nice Hotel

Me and my partner stayed here our first 4 days in Maui. Our initial plan was to use this as a base for our day trips & use the Four Seasons for our relaxing days. The Sheraton surprised us with how nice it was.
Everyone on staff was very friendly & helpful. We were upgraded w/o even asking from a garden view to a partial ocean view room. Buffet breakfast was very nice. The location of this hotel is probably the best of any hotel on Maui. Although we loved the Four Seasons probably more, the location of the Sheraton is much better. The snorkeling off black rock is great, nice beach, & close to Lahaina which has alot to do. Also we booked on priceline & got a great deal. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

All the great reviews of this hotel are absolutely true! Everything was fantastic: location, room, food. Some have complained about the uncaring staff. We encountered the exact opposite. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The have instituted a program called the "Starwood Promise". If you are not 100% satisfied about anything, just tell them and they will make it right. Almost every employee that we encountered reminded us of this policy. We would definitely stay there again!

30TH Anniversary Trip.....

Wife and I were here JULY 5-8, 2003. Superb grounds, efficient and gracious staff, wonderful pool and ocean activities AND splendid golf right across the parkway!! The sunsets and cliff diver and the nearby shopping and dining options were quite memorable. Truly paradise............

Super Nice Place

We had a wonderful time during June 23-30, 2003. The staff was very friendly and the room was nice. Only two minor problems. Our room had the A/C blowing on us at night until we figured out to turn it on low fan and the light coming in from the crack on the bottom of the door, against the mirrored closet was very bright until we figured out to place our suitcases there to block it. There can't be any better location on Kaanapali beach than the Sheraton. The grounds were impeccable. The bars made terrifci tropical drinks. Our room faced the ocean directly and we had a wonderful view. We would stay there again.

A Great Vacation

My family and I spent seven nights at the Sheraton Maui in June 2003.
We loved the hotel, beach, and restaurants. The hotel staff was professional and attentive. In my opinion it is the best location and hotel on Kaanapali. We spoke with multiple guests at the nearby Westin who were disappointed in their stay -- no closets or chester draws, small rooms. Everyone at the Sheraton that we spoke to was pleased. We went to the Luau at the Marriott and had a great time. We had dinner at a number of restaurants and recommend the Hula Grill and Tropica. Our only dining disappointment was Leilani's because of extremely unfriendly service. We will return to the Sheraton and recommend it to our friends.

Great if you want all-in-one resort

My mom and I stayed here for a short "getaway" from it all weekend. I was hesitant becuase although I had read the reviews, most Sheratons in the states are good hotels, but nothing fancy. This place is NICE. Definitely a 4-star hotel. We bought a air+hotel package (got a great deal) with a garden view room. Well we arrived early and our room wasn't ready. After about an hour when we checked back, they gave us a room --- but upgraded us to ocean view!! :-) Everything is open, airy, and clean. Balconies are huge. I guess my only complaints would be how expensive EVERYTHING is -- but I suppose you expect this at a nice hotel and in Hawaii. Brunch was $20/person. Chairs by the pool are free, but on the beach are $25/day or you can get a cabana for $30/day -- I highly recommend the cabana! There's a great snorkeling area and all the water activities stuff is right there and easy to sign up for. Taxi ride to Lahaina (where there are lots of shops, luaus, etc.) is about $12. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. If you want a resort-style vacation, it's perfect. If you want more back to nature, "real" Hawaii -- this is not the place to stay. Last but not least, the hotel never seemed crowded, which I loved. The beach was never ever crowded and the weather was perfect (Memorial Day 2003). Aloha!

Top Local Tips for Lahaina

Rent a car Rent a car and explore the island! The entire island is gorgeous! We rented a car for the entire week and went to the aquarium, Haleakala volcano, lavender farm, visited waterfalls (road to Hana) and were able to go to local restaurants. Also if you are fair skinned like me, put on your spf! Maui is near the equator and the sun is strong!

Things to do in Maui Visit The Old Lahaina Luau & Take the drive on the Road to Hana. Enjoy your trip!

Hungry? Just ask the concierge! The Sheraton Maui concierge were very helpful and knowledgeable about all the eateries, big and small, around the island. For Chinese, Zuihao was wonderful - location and food. Italian - Basil Tomato on Kekaa Dr on the 5th tee of the Kaanapali Golf course - a bit pricey but very well done. Thai - I forgot the name already, but a nice small restaurant in Lahiana near the post office (same parking lot). Stay away from Mexican restaurants - Comprades was very mediocre as was Maui Tacos (fast food chain). Did not try Cilantro (Mex). For breakfast, Sheraton buffet was great - better than the Ritz.
