We found the Royal Kahana to be a 33 year old, 12 story resort suffering from an abundance of apparent maintenance issues and problems. That, coupled with a staff that seemed to be unconcerned and uncaring as well as extremely unfriendly, made this a poor value for what they charge per night.
It was quite obvious to us that the resort's attitude and approach is to “band-aid” things instead of an on-going regular maintenance program. Parking is totally inadequate and a large number of parking spaces are marked “reserved.” Many of those spaces went unused during our stay. A large area of parking spaces was being utilized for the storage of old furnishings, equipment, building materials and even a huge pile of sandbags.
The resort has 3 elevators but most of the time only 2 were operating. The exterior lighting, especially around the lone barbeque adjacent to the pool, was inadequate. At night, the lighting in that area was working, but it was covered by shrubbery that needed trimming, making it almost nonexistent. The pool area was extremely small for the 230 plus units in the resort. There weren't enough lounges or chairs around the pool or on the small grass area near the beach. Many guests were overheard complaining about this problem while sunbathing around the pool.
The air conditioning was barely adequate and ran most of the time, but never seemed to cool the unit down. There are several resorts along Lower Honoapiilani Road in Kahana that have a lot more to offer at a much cheaper price. Do yourself a favor and opt for one of those, not this one!

Could be better...

My parents and I stayed here in March of 2003. I'll say the best thing about the place was the view from our room. From our lanai, we had a beautiful view of Molokai and also had the privilege of seeing a lot of grey whales in the channel between the islands. The beach access was great, too. What bothered me about the place was the paucity of guest amenities, namely no hot tubs or free continental breakfast in the morning. It also did not have the frills like many other resorts in the area such as a theme pool, although it did have a tennis court. My other complaint, which other writers have expressed, was the need to drive long distances to get to other parts of the island. Thanks to the car rental companies' restriction on driving north of Wailuku, driving on highway 30 is the only way to get between Lahaina and the center of the island. (Still a beautiful drive though). If I could do it over, I think I would choose a resort in Kihei or Wailea.

Me & my husband stayed at the Royal Kahana the last week of October, 2003. I was not inpressed for an Outrigger property. This is the second time we been to Hawaii, but the first time in Maui. Maui is a beautiful island. Definetly worth seeing, especially if you like snorkeling, and hiking. We decided to stay at the Royal Kahana because of the price. We have a entertainment card, which saved us half price. We stayed in a oceanview studio, but the view was obstructed from the hotel next door.
I was upset with the room, The bathroom was very old, I even seen a roach there. The bed was uncomfortable. The only nice thing was having a washer and dryer in the room. Except the front desk charges you for extra soap. $5.00 a box for a sample size. I also did not like the location, we had to drive all the time. The beach was OK compared to other areas on the island. Also the staff was not friendly, they seemed like if you asked for anything it was a problem. I lost one of my door keys and they charged me for that also. And the hallways to your room were very dirty. The next time I will definetly stay at a resort instead. I asked to credit my skymiles (because they are a partner with Continental) and the hotel refused. So I had to call Outrigger when I returned from my vacation. Besides my bad experience with the hotel, Maui is deintely one of the most beautiful places in this world.

Not bad for first Hawaii experience

We fell in love the moment we stepped off the plane in Maui. We thoroughly enjoyed our 9 days in Kahana/Lahaina, Maui. For the price, and considering the general high cost of staying in Hawaii resorts, we got a good deal. However, I think our room could have been cleaner, or more specifically, redecorated. The bathroom facilities were outdated and worn, and the carpet was gross. The lanai was wonderful and the kitchenette was a God-send. Maid service was fair, but sometimes, absent. No frills place, but beach access was a plus, as was sleeping with our oceanview room windows open to hear the surf. We had to buy a CD of ocean waves sounds to fall asleep after we got home to the midwest! How we miss Maui! For those of you who live there, count yourself among the most blessed souls in the USA! Maui IS the best!

My wife and I stayed here for a week this past October and were happy with just about everything. We were in a one bedroom studio and it was all we needed. The location is great if you are looking for something away from the more populated areas. The pool is quiet and secluded and the beach, while not perfect, is fine for laying out or watching a sunset. The staff was a bit obnoxious but not horrible. All in all we were happy and would definately give it a lot of consideration when returning.

I would definitely recommend the Royal Kahana Resort. The price was great, the view was fantastic, and the location was perfect. The beach was very private and clean. We stayed for 11 nights and would definitely stay here again. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

This was such a great place to be. The cocktail reception was such a pleasant surprise. The room was very nice. We stayed in the two bedroom, ocean view, which is more room than I had imagined. We were close to many dining and snorkeling locations. Beach isn't really as great compared to the beautiful ones down the shore...but it's better that way for keeping it just for the guests. The sunset view is so nice. Sailboats go by during the day. Recommend using the grocery store down the road vs. across the street. Larger store with better pricing.
The pool was clean and nice. This place is good for families. The staff was wonderful and some of the staff live on property so special attention is given there. The grills and clubhouse were clean and very accessible. Would DEFINITELY stay there again!

Pleasantly surprised?

Just got back from our honeymoon in Maui. We stayed for five nights at the Royal Kahana. We upgraded to an ocean view room which cost $20 extra a night but was worth it. We booked the room with the Entertainment Card so the price was already reasonable. We payed $113 a night before taxes. The view was fantastic and the room was clean and modern. My only gripe would be that the AC didn't work very good and the carpet was slightly worn. One cool feature our room had was a blender. We made smoothies and milkshakes all week. Also, the maid informed me that the 11th and 12th floors have nicer furniture than the rest of the complex so request one of those rooms. I think the views may have been better from the south side of the building but now I'm just getting picky. The night desk manager Ted was also kind of annoying but still very helpful. Once last thing is the beach here was very swimable and not covered in seawead like certain guide books have stated (Blue Bible). Kahana Beach was actually nicer than the sourthern end of Kaanapali which was actually completely washed away in a storm some time this year. Overall, we had a great experience here and would stay here again.

Not a better view on Maui

As a frequent visiter to the RKR, I am always amazed at the effort and work to make the place better each trip. There are not better views on the island if tou get an ocean view or ocean front. The proerty is clean with gas BBQ grills for those that do not want to always go spend $100 for dinner. It is one of the few properties on west Maui with AC in all units and a heated pool. If you go in Feb, you know how much that is needed. It just keeps getting better and better.

We stayed at the Royal Kahana in August 2003. Some of the reviews and the condo's wedsite pictures made me a little nervous about our selection, but I really loved the place and would stay there again. It is very unassuming from the outside and has a small check in desk that makes you wonder about the quality. But don't worry, our room was beautiful with a great view. Maid service daily and they furnished dish soap and there were some dry condiments in the rooms. Also, past guest have left items such as laundry detg, beach chairs and coolers so check your room before you buy anything. The beach reviews I read wern't very good, but we enjoyed it. It was very quite and about the only drawback was the reef area in the wanter but I found that is common on a lot of the beachs. We talked to some people who had to change rooms and they reported that they were very good about it.

Really loved the place

Great place to stay. We stayed in two beautiful 1-bedroom condos.
Although there is no restaurant on site, there are plenty within walking distance. We wanted a nice place to stay and this exceeded our expectations. We traveled the island a lot and this was the perfect place to return to after a long day in the sun. Beautiful views and waking up to the sound of the waves breaking against shoreline was hard to leave. When I return, I will only want to stay here !

Top Local Tips for Lahaina

Stop and watch the wind surfers On our trip to Hanna we stopped at a great beach. Not sure what the name of the beach was but BIG waves. Come to find out it is a world class wind surfing beach!!!

The BEST of Maui If you really want to make Maui a special trip and it will be difficult as all the building just seems to continue and the island is very crowded but do these few things to make it a bit more enjoyable...1) Stay in West Maui as it is cooler and less crowded. 2) When you arrive in Kahului at the airport make a dash for the car rentals while your partner waits for the bags as it takes FOREVER to rent a car there unless you're in a special program with a car rental agency. 3) Go to Safeway or Star for groceries, all other markets are complete rip-offs! 4) Eat at these following places: Leilani's, The Plantation Restaurant, Lahaina Fish Company, Dollie's...5) If it's the season, go on a whale watch! It might sound touristy and it is but it's well worth the ride!!!

save your money Maui Taco is a great place to eat. Skip the Seahouse, pricey and our prime rib was fatty and undercooked. Buzz's Wharf is pricey but the food is excellent, especially the Mahi-Mahi and the crab cakes. We stopped at Aloha Mixed Plate on Front St. but the service was terrible so we left before we even ordered.
