Tissue paper walls, people yelling next door. Place felt like you'd find drug dealers and hookers hanging around. Creepy.
Some teens were having a contest flinging bags of garbage at the dumpster in the parking area. I didn't stick around for the finals.
Definitely NOT the 3-star hotel as represented. (The girl at the counter laughed when I told her...really...she laughed.)

Wondering about the comments

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed here numerous times. I guess we never looked under the beds. Never saw mouse droppings, either. It is located in a pretty central location, between the Wailea-Kihei area and the Kapalua-Kaanapali area, so its hard to duplicate this central location.
We have never been disappointed, really. It was an economy choice on our vacation and it worked out OK. All folks look for varying things and have been to varying places with varying comments. If not this motel, which one is better, all things considered? We're going again soon and will have to choose a motel, so which other one should be considered? Email me if you have suggestions. Thanks, folks

depends on what you get

from bums
I was there last month. I was also concerned about the negative reviews before arriving there. I think it boils down to what you get. Hotel is old, however they have some remodeled rooms. So if you get a new room, this hotel is a deal. The other rooms are a bit rundown which can be disappointing for the first timer. The staff was quite friendly and really didn't have any problems mentioned by other reviewers. The location is good since it is close to restaurants.

great price, great location, desent rooms for the price

from lefik
I read alot of negative reviews about this place before we left and I was very worried, but it all proved to be untrue. They were 'VERY' kind and the loaction was great. The rooms were ok but not great. But I'd say it was great for the price. Its 'NOT' a high class resort but it was clean and the people were very freindly. We only needed a room to sleep in, as were out all day, everyday. If your not looking for a resort setting (we were not) and you basically just need a place to sleep this will do. The walls do seem to be thin and you can hear some noise, but we told them that we needed a quite room and we had no pronlems with noise.

If you want to save money and have a great location, then this is it. If you want a fancy resort setting this is NOT it.

Extremely Disapointing!!

Spent last 3 days of our honeymoon at this hotel, following a stay with the same hotel group on the Island of Oahu. Hotel was very tired and appeared well used. Could do with updating/decorating. Holes in bedlinen, dirty grubby stained carpets and damaged sanitaryware! Not much Aloha spirit encountered either, which was a dissapointing end to our otherwise wonderful honeymoon. Would return to Maui but not to this hotel.

Mixed feelings about this hotel

from texasgal120
This hotel is very much for budget travelers. Good value for location.
Lahaina is a beautiful town. Not good location if you want to frolick on the beach.

The room: The shower had mildew. There were dust bunnies. They charge you for the safe unless you tell them at check out that you did not use it. Pool was fine. Deck chairs were dirty. We stayed in a one bedroom suite with kitchen. Room was large. Saved money by eating breakfast in room and packing lunches. Very easy to drop $70-100 just for dinner.

Big Beach is beautiful as is Kanapali Beach. Actually all the beaches are beautiful. Excellent snorkeling at Black Rock. Lots of turtles, fish and eagle rays. Fish Bowl was so-so. Visibility was poor in morning when were were there. Maybe it clears up later in day? Lots of kayakers go to this spot.

If you like Vietnamese food eat at A Saigon Cafe. Inexpensive and very good food.

Drove road to Hana. Very beautiful. Incredible scenery change at end.
Took us longer than anticipated.

Mixed feelings about excursion with Maui Magic. Boat was fine, crew was fine. Went to two snorkel sights, first one was terrible. Then to Molokini, which was wonderful. Saw a reef shark! I paid more money to go to two snorkel sights and feel that I did not get my monies worth.

We went to Molokai on ferry and rented car. Felt very rushed.

Hated it!!!

Absolutly Terrible, whilst we were there a couple was accidently! charge $10.000 for a phone call yes thats right $10.000 and had to fight with the RUDE, staff and Management to get their money back. It was Dirty and the staff NEED TRAINING ON CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Very old and dirty but perfect location

We came back from Maui two weeks ago and stayed at Ohana Islander. We booked the hotel via internet just 3 days before leaving for our last minute trip. Unfortunately I read only after the booking all the negative reviews posted on Trip Advisor. I can confirm everything, except for the mice we didn't meet personally. The hotel has a wonderful, awesome location: you don't really need the car to go around. Few steps from everything. Lahaina is nice e full of life and activities. Anyway the hotel is very very old and very very dirty. The housekeeping clean everyday, but it isn't enough! There are spots on the carpet, and dust and dirty everywhere that it's impossible to clean because it's so old. I wanted to change hotel, when I saw the room; but I had already payed the entire price so I didn't want to loose the money and anyway at the end, you go there only for sleeping. As I already said the hotel has a perfect location and if you don't care too much about all these facts, it's affordable and really in the heart of Lahaina. Sure I'm not going there again. The story of the safe it's true, you have to tell them if you don't use it, otherwise you're billed for it. We didn't use also the valet parking, it's easy to find a spot on the road right outside the hotel.

Not the Hilton, but nice enough

We stayed at the Maui Islander at the end of May through the beginning of June 2003. We had booked a studio, but upgraded to a one bedroom suite. Honestly, the studio was kind of gross with old furniture and bedspreads, but the suite had been recently remodeled and was fairly nice. We didn't spend much time indoors, so the hotel suited our needs, was comfortable and clean. I don't know who spends their time checking for dirt under the bed, but staff cleaned our room every day.

The service we received was friendly. They were very kind and accomodating when we asked to upgrade, and they only charged us $10 a night for the upgrade (which was well worth it).

The best part of this place is its location. It is within walking distance of the harbor (snorkel cruises), many wonderful restaurants, and shopping. Lahaina is the best place to get deals on snorkel cruises and other excursions.

Warning: They do charge $5 a day for parking. Also, if you don't use the safe, make sure you mention it to them, so they take the fees off your final bill.

NO SERVICE, DIRTY and OVERALL AWFUL

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just returned from a week staying here. It was awful. The room was filthy and they only "clean every 3rd day...if you can even call that clean.

We had a cockroach in our room and there were inches of dust on almost everything.

The staff was incredibly uncourteous and provided no service.

On top of everything they charge you extra for a safe whether you use it or not which you only find out if you read the fine print on the guest information loacted in the room; or get as a nice surprise upon exiting.

With the added costs we should have stayed somewhere nicer and paid the same amount. This motel is not worth anything no matter how cheap.

no aloha to be found

My overall experience with this hotel was disappointing. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, frankly, but was hoping for a friendly, decent place to stay, close to Lahaina. The best that can be said about it is that it is convenient to Lahainatown. The hotel staff was not helpful, and not especially friendly. They charged me a daily fee for the use of the in-room safe, even though I didn't use it. When I mentioned this to them they took it off my bill, but if I hadn't checked, I would have been charged. My room didn't have any windows that opened, and even with the fan and the a/c on, it got quite stuffy. The walls were REALLY thin! I had a very passionate couple in the room next to mine, and thank god my kids weren't on vacation with me this time!! The cleanliness of the room was OK, nothing special. The pool was OK, nothing special. It wasn't a terrible hotel all in all, but it was certainly lacking in aloha. I will not stay here again, and I don't recommend it. I'm sure there are better choices out there! I was also a bit disappointed by Lahaina. While historically interesting, at this point in time it is just a huge tourist trap. Everyone is either a tourist or has got one hand in your pocket. The island itself is beautiful ... beautiful beaches ... beautiful mountains ...
