Historical Traveller Reviews of Aston Mahana at Kaanapali Hotel

Amazing vacation home!

from scubamom08
We could not have found a more beautiful place to stay than the Aston Mahana. Based on what I had read, I had high hopes, but the reality far exceeded my expectations. The condo was beautiful, huge, with amazing views of the ocean as well as the island. The decor was lovely, and the hotel staff was excellent. We had great swimming and snorkeling just steps from our door, and a great pool as well. A couple more pans in the kitchen would have been nice, but everything else was truly perfect. I hope to go back, and would never stay anywhere else.

A Wonderful Place to Stay!

We spent 4 nights at the Mahana, checking in 10/19/2003. We were VERY pleased with the property. As stated in other reviews, each condo has an ocean front view with a furnished deck. We stayed in a "studio" unit. It was very nicely furnished and decorated and just fine for 2 people. The bed was advertised as a queen size, but we found it to be just a standard size bed (but very comfortable). The room was cleaned daily, and clean towels supplied daily. We were pleased that there were no bugs ANYWHERE (not even on the deck). One caution for anyone that is a "light sleeper"....the ocean front location means that you will hear the surf crashing ALL NIGHT!!. Those with problems sleeping might want to pick a different property with a quieter "garden view". There is plenty of free parking, and it's all shaded parking all day long (the trees and landscaping are beautiful). The staff is friendly, and seemed focused on seeing that the guests are well taken care of. We got at least 3 phone calls from the front desk wanting to know if we needed anything, or if there were any problems they could help with. The property is in a great location, but a little hard to find (all those road signs might as well be in a foreign language (street names are very unusual...but this IS Hawaii). E-mail me and I'll give you some landmarks to look for that will make finding the Mahana very simple.
There's no shortage of things to do in Maui. Just being there for 4 nights did not permit us to do everything. We spent some time sightseeing. We attended the "Drums of the Pacific" luau, which was excellent (the Mahana gave us a 2 for 1 coupon for the luau). One thing that we did that was WAY OVERPRICED FOR THE EXPERIENCE was the "Atlantis Submarine"....I recommend just going to the Ocean Center Aquarium. You'll see more and save LOTS of money!! Send any inquires to me at

The Mahana was wonderful!

I was nervous booking the Mahana because the rates were so low compared to other condos and resorts, but upon arrival, I knew I had made an absolutely wonderful choice. I can't believe others spend more at the other resorts. The ocean front views were simply breath taking! We took our two kids (ages 9 & 12)....and the washer/dryer was a BIG plus. We were able to wash our towels and clothes every day. We'd do a load every evening as we were getting ready for bed. I just can't tell you how much we loved the Mahana. The staff was wonderful, the decor was very nice. We stayed in room 818. Maui was fantastic! If you stay at the Mahana, make sure you drive up the 30 and snorkel at the beaches!
There is one beach that is completely covered under a canopy of foliage. The water clarity was the best....better than our trip to Molokini! If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place, the Mahana is for you! And only 5 minutes away from the action at Kaanapali!

Beautiful Vacation Spot

My wife and I stayed at the Mahana (unit 1109) for a week in September 2003. We absolutely loved it there. The Mahana is very well managed and maintained. The staff was very friendly and the grounds were beautiful.
The swimming pool was very nice with wonderful views of the ocean. Our unit was beautifully furnished and had a large lanai that was wonderful for eating dinner while watching the sunsets. The location is also great - close to Lahaina and only one block from a small shopping center with a grocery store and several small restaurants. I would definitely stay at unit 1109 at the Mahana again and would recommend it to anyone.

Great First Trip

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I booked a condo for the week of August 24th, based upon the recommendations of trip advisor reviewers. We were pleasantly surprised! We had plenty of room and was well kept. The Mahana has no restaurant or night club, which was perfect for our first anniversary, so anyone not looking for an over crowded area, this is it. A grocery store is across form the complex so stocking up for the week was no problem. The beach is right out the door and enjoyed the picturesque view every evening. Then in the morning you have a mountain outside your front door. When you plan activities, try to do one a day. Most locations were at least 30 minute drives. Pick up snorkeling gear for the week, because you are close to several prime areas. We will definitly return!

Great vacation at the Mahana

from Jxtwo
This was "excellent" in our books, but we give it an "above average" for the general public, it all depends on your goals for your accomodation while on Maui.

If you want quiet, private and quality the Mahana is all these. Just the drive up the beautifully shaded laneway is a plus!

The west facing position of the building means shaded lanais for most of the day, with the afternoon sun being pretty warm, so you might want the drapes pulled if you leave the room in the afternoon so the air conditioning doesn't have to work so hard! But you do get to watch the sunsets right from your deck chair - lots of photo ops.

The Mahana does not have the "resort" feeling or night club acts so depending on what you like, be aware that this is a quality residence-style accomodation and you will not be disappointed.

We spent 10 days here and miss our lovely 4th floor lanai lunches. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen had the basics like coffee filters, dish washing detergent, laundry soap to get you started, and give you time to get to a store for your personal favourites.

As far as the beach is concerned there is about two miles of uninterrupted beach from the Mahana, southward to the Sheraton Maui.
Practically deserted. So we were not too concerned that the swimming right oposite the Mahana is a bit less desirable due to currents/rocks, we just walked a couple of hundred yards.

There is no restaurant at the Mahana but this condo is the sister to the Aston Kaanapali three doors down (to the north) so Mahana residents have the ability to eat at AK's Beach Club restaurant and have it charged to the room. Very handy, reasonable prices for family, compared to what we saw elsewhere. The beach there is great too.

But no place has the "right on the water" feel like the Mahana. We'll be back...

The Perfect Hawaiian Getaway

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I just returned from our Maui vacation at the Mahana and we couldn't have asked for more. We wanted a quiet, relaxing vacation where we could reconnect with each other. It was our first vacation in seven years of marriage, but definitely not our last (we are already planning our return trip and we will be coming back to the Mahana). The Mahana was exactly what we were looking for, affordable condo accomodations, spectacular views, and peace and quiet. We had a gorgeous 2nd floor condo, beautifully decorated and it had everything we needed including a coffee pot, pots and pans, dishwasher, corkscrew, champagne bucket, etc. The condo was so spacious, the bed was extremely comfortable (it doesn't hurt to have the sound of the ocean when you're drifting off to sleep) and housekeeping cleans everyday. We loved having the freedom of getting up in the morning, having a quiet breakfast on our huge lanai, doing the beach thing in the morning, grabbing a quick lunch (sandwiches or snacky type food worked great) and heading off to our destination for the afternoon. We would make our dinner reservations at a different "nice" restaurant each morning for that night. We highly recommend I'o in Lahaina (on the corner of Front St. and Shaw St.) Great food and a classic Hawaiian oceanfront atmosphere with the moonlight shining down and the waves lapping on the shore. Very romantic! If you are looking for an affordable, but highly romantic and enjoyable vacation book the Mahana-you won't be disappointed! Mahalo!!

Paradise found here at the Mahana

from GERI
My family and I have stayed here in 1991, 1993, 1994, 2002 and April of 2003. We absolutely love this place. All of the condo's are ocean front. You are practically right on the beach, which is great for snorkeling and bodyboarding. All of the condo's are spacious and very clean. Full kitchens, and a washer and dryer. The views from your lanai are spectacular. You can see the islands of Molokai and Lanai. The sun sets right in front of you every evening and each night it is a different color. The Mahana is a quiet relaxing place. The pool is small but ...who's to complain when you have the ocean at your feet.
Your condo is cleaned everyday. :) There is a shopping center across the street (market) and an ABC Store all within walking distance. We won't stay anywhere else but here when we are on Maui. We are going back in the fall. Can't wait!! PS: You can hear the ocean while you are falling about "sweet dreams"!!

Good price - great view.

Just got back from the Aston Mahana in Maui. The hotel is right on the beach, but the beach is not very nice to swim at. Not much sand and there are alot of rocks at the waters edge. The rooms are reasonable with each one being decorated a little different. We looked at a couple of the rooms and most of them do show their age, but are clean and confortable. We had a room on the 11th floor - the view is FANTASTIC !!
All of the rooms at the Mahana are ocean view, which is really nice.
The maid service leaves a little to be desired. We ran out of soap and shampoo on the 3rd day and when we got back to our room at 11pm found that it had not been replaced. Apparently you need to get replacement items from the front desk, but no where in the room does it tell you that - not a major problem, just a little inconvient. If you are expecting the Hyatt you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for clean, budget accommodation and this is great.

What a find!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just got back! This place is such a find! If you're a couple, want some peace and quiet..close to good beach..great staff. What a view from the lanai! Wish I had another week. No restaurants or frilss but so thing Maui has is reasons to leave your condo..great food and activities.....check it out-you won't be sorry.

Top Local Tips for Lahaina

Go to I'O, Pacific O, Feast at Lele, but do NOT go to heacocks. I actually wrote reviews for those restaurants 11 months ago, so visit them for more info.

Cilantros We loved the Mother Clucker Flautas, we went back twice for these and you can bring your own beer/wine there.

Great Thai Place Near the Buns of Maui, a restaurant called the Thai Chef...GREAT FOOD! And very reasonably priced. Be sure to try the warm tapioca pudding for desert!
