We visited the Kaanapali Shores for our honeymoon during the first week of September. My husband and I were both a little concerned since we had read so many negative reviews of the condos there. But we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at our room. It was very spacious and had absolutely everything we needed daily maid service, kitchen fully equipped with dishes and appliances, and we had a beautiful view of the ocean from our lanai. A complimentary bottle of wine was also left for us since we were honeymooners.The resort gave us $100 to use at the Beach Club Restaurant, and we spread that over one dinner and two lunches. The food was good, and you could even order from your pool chaise if you didnt want to get out of the sun. We had no trouble getting pool chairs at any time of the day, and everybody was so friendly. The staff was very accommodating when we requested a late checkout due to our evening flight, and the activity desk was amazing in helping us book a luau. We found the lobby to be very cozy and nice, and the grounds were impeccably maintained, with lots of palm trees and an area with a little waterfall and a coy pond.The pools were not that big, but they were awesome to take dips in to get a break from the sun. There were two pools and each one had a whirlpool tub adjacent to it. We found the whirlpool by the garden pool to be more powerful and used that one all week.The shops along the main floor were also very handy for sundries and snacks, and were open fairly late. For groceries and fresh coffee, the marketplace across the street from the Shores was very convenient.All in all, we were absolutely thrilled with the Shores, and would stay there again without hesitation when we return to Lahaina.

A great Vacation

My wife and I took a long awaited vacation with my two teenage daughters to the Aston Kaanapali Shores Resort and had a great time. I was a bit concerned based on some of the negative reviews I had read here before we left but was presently surprised when we arrived. We were upgraded to a two bedroom ocean view suite at no extra charge and the room was fine. It wasn't plush by any means but I hadn't expected anything fancy based on the reasonable price that I had paid. The condo had a full kitchen which saved us plenty on meals and the unit also had a washer/dryer which was quite handy. The staff was great and helpful.
The pool area is plain compared to the other resorts in the area but after all, who wants to hang around the pool all day anyway. I'd stay there again and I'd recommend the Aston Kaanapali Shores resort to anyone who is looking for a good place to stay at reasonable rates.

Room Updates Coming

Units were last updated in 1996 and will be renovated in 2004. New carpeting for the rooms in Fall 2003. Many express displeasure with the $9/day parking fee and $1 per call local call and long distance access fee. However, these things are not at all unusual. Embassy Maui charges $7.50/day to park, The Whaler $7/day and all the more expensive hotels such as Westin, Sheraton and Kaanapali Beach Hotel charge for this.
Virtually every resort in Hawaii charges for local and long distance phone access, or they charge a resort fee. Think that's bad - the Manele Bay Resort on Lanai charges $0.75 to call another ROOM.

Nice, but would probably stay elsewhere next time

The property was very well maintained in the public areas and was convenient for a family. Our unit was very worn, but had a great ocean view to the rear of the complex. We could see some of the rooms seemed to be in better shape than others. It might be that the better the view the more wear. Had washer and dryer, dryer squeaked. The maid service was not that great. Did not get into room until 4:00, check in was 3:00. On Sunday, no room service until after 3:30. Most days beds were not made until after 1:00-2:00. No coffee was provide after first day, or washed out by room service. Most days the dish cloth and kitchen towel was forgotten. Felt like unit was a little dirty, carpet in bad shape. But also realize, the amount of tourism must really wreak havoc on these units.

Had a fire alarm one evening about 6:30. It was a strange alarm ringing that we have never heard. We were getting onl elevator when we first heard. Went to our room and heard it in our room. We tried to call front desk and operator, no answer. My family doubted that anything was wrong, or that it was a fire alarm. As we went to stairwell we found lots of people angered trying to find out what was going on. There was a securtiy guard that said he didn't know what was going on except an employee burnt popcorn. After talking to another security guard closer to the front desk area, he confirmed that nothing was wrong and said we could go to our rooms. About an hour later, it was announced that nothing was wrong, sorry for the inconvience. Where were the key employees when this happened?? A lot of people didn't even realize that it was a fire alarm because it sounded so strange. It was also a general feeling that most people would have probably slept through it.

The restaurant was great for breakfast and lunch. Dinner was so-so.
Beach was nice to have, not best swimming beach, but great for family activities.

Generally I think it is a pretty good choice for a condo, but would probably try staying someplace else the next time. We had stayed at another property that is very close and were unable to get a room there this trip.

July 3, 2003. This is our 5th trip to Maui and we've stayed in other condos/hotels. The Kaanapali Shores was a wonderful surprise! Our condo had everything we needed (even a washer and dryer, which is great when you have kids). The unit over looked the grounds, which are beautiful, and even had an oceanview. The furnishings in the unit are dated, but we were talking to the front desk and was told all units will have new carpet by the end of 2003 and new furniture in 2004. It is a great place to stay and we plan to return again in 2004!

better than expected

We spent 5 nights in Maui and the motel was better than expected after reading some of the other reviews. Our "condo" was a two bedroom motel room on the top floor of the complex which was not exactly what we were expecting but was fine. The rooms were clean and a bit worn, but what do you expect in that sort of climate, with wet sandy bodies moving through there 24 hrs a day. The motel was out to make a dime every way they could:parking, charging double price for stamps, charging $0.95 for local and 1-800 calls. The staff was mostly pleasant but not overly helpful. Overall, the stay was fine considering how long you actually spend in the room. I would definitely consider staying there again WHEN we go back.

We stayed here in late July 2003. Very expensive, with poor beach.
Charged for everything--local calls, nine dollars a day to park! I'd look elsewhere.

mixed bag condo-hotel

Just spent 07/06/03 until 07/16/03 at the Kaanapali Shores in a studio partial ocean view room.Bedroom--cramped and dark with no view of the outside. The ocean view came from the kitchen-sitting area and the lanai just outside of it. Had to eat on the lanai--since there was no table in the room for this purpose.

The bathroom needed a lock on the door--its locking plate was held on by one loosely hanging screw, the tub needed its hot water source fixed and a new drain plug--which was never put in while we were there. It was left laying on the corner of the tub--right front edge facing the shower head.Some tiles were chipped or missing and were painted over to try to hide this. Fixtures needed replacing--they were badly tarnished and old looking. The showere head was gross looking--some mold on its holed head. Cleaned this ourselves with bleach.The dishwasher needed replacing--it was badly rusted and corroded inside, also it had broken trim on the lower access panel hanging down.Silverwear provided was in need of replacing also--some rust spots were on its "stainless" surfaces.

When inquiring about upgrading to a better quality room the first day we were there, we were told to check back and/or the front desk would call us after checking with the day manager. No one ever called. We checked back daily. but recieved the runaround for 5 days. They finally had a lady tell us at the front desk that we could upgrade for the last 5 days of our stay for an additional $500.00. We declined.

It seems all the money is being spent on the external amenities--grounds were impeccable, building outside was recently repainted, and a fabulous lobby. Two very nice regular type pools--one near the ocean and one in the middle of the garden area. A hot tub adjoined the pool nearest the ocean.Plentiful sunning chairs and beach towels were supplied at no charge. A beach side activity center was easier to use than the lobby area one.


One big gripe--paying $9.00 per day just to park there. After charging what they charge for the rooms--that was "outrageous"!! Would not recommend staying there. This was our 5th trip to Maui, so we can definitely tell you that there are better deals out there rated at the same 3 stars.

This was our first vacation taking our 14 month on a plane, and staying at a hotel with her. The Kaanapali Shores was set up great for traveling with an infant. Each room had a washer dryer, a kitchen, and we had a seperate bedroom. It worked fine.

I was disapointed in the place because it has potential, but it is very run down. Some simple updates would add a nicer feeling to the stay there. If you are on a budget, and don't plan to stay in your room that much, I'd say it's fine. If you are used to a nice place, or need to stay in the room while your children are napping etc.. I would strongly recomend staying somewhere else.

I never plan to stay there again.

Stayed for 10 days in May. 2003. Hawaii was beautiful. Hotel was average. Rooms were well worn. Very surprised to be charged $9/night for parking, in addition to room rate. Watch out for the safe charge!!!

Top Local Tips for Lahaina

Alii Kula Lavender Gardens Would highly recommend the Lavender Gardens in Upcountry Maui, the Alii Kula Lavender Gardens! Approximately 30 minutes from the Kahului Airport or 40 minutes from Kaanapali area. The Garden Tour is just $10 & well worth it! If time permits, the crater is a couple hours from the Gardens!

Surfing We surfed with Royal Hawaiian...we almost thought we were going to be surfing with a 6 and 7 year old...and were 24. Make sure they put you in you age range. KC was a great instructer.

Kapalua airport is the closest The main airport on Maui, Kahului, is about 50 minute drive away. Ok if you're renting a car, but pricey by taxi. Kapalua Airport, is just a short distance from Kaanapali Shores. So if you're arriving via Honolulu, choose Kapalua. If you have a direct flight from the mainland to Maui, you may have no choice but Kahului.
