Historical Traveller Reviews of Aston at Papakea Resort Hotel
Papakea is Beautiful
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at Papakea a year ago and fell in love with the whole package. The loaction, the grounds and Koi ponds and the fresh breezes off the ocean. we liked it so much that we purchased a top floor ocean front unit and are extremely pleased with our decision. Nothing is perfect in this world but Papakea is way up there.
quiet, peacefull and oceanfront

We have stayed at Papakea many times and have found it to be a lovely, peaceful, quite resort with all the amenities you could ask for. Two pools and two nice hot jacuzzi's along with the putting greens and tennis courts are daily activities for our family. We enjoy the gas bar-be-ques around the pools and there is a shopping center with grocery store right across the street. The best snorkeling on the island is on this side of the island and we enjoy being close to Lahaina town and all the shops and restaurants. As others have suggested, you do have to be careful who you book your condo through as they are privately owned. We have booked for many years from Maui Dreams Come True and we do highly recommend them. Previously we booked through the travel agents but never knew what unit or what location we were going to get. We have stayed at many other condo's on Maui but this is by far our family favorite.
ve never had a problem here.....
I've stayed at Papakea 3 times (September, 2003, Feb. 2003, and Feb. 2002). Each time we stayed here, our room has only gotten better! The first time we booked through Maui Dreams - we had a nice 1 bdrm ocean view room in the H building on the 2nd floor. The second time, we booked through ualvacations, we stayed in another 1 bdrm ocean view room in the J building, on the 3rd floor. The last time (the best room of all - through aavacations), a 1 bdrm oceanview on the 2nd floor of the K building. The rooms were always clean, and the interior decorations varied from unit to unit, but were always pretty nice. We loved sitting on the lanai each morning and having breakfast, and all had great views of the ocean from the unit. People ask me if the picture I took with my camera were actually postcards because the view was amazing. When we went in March, parking was kind of a pain because the resort was fully booked. When we went in September, there was never a problem. We also used the activities desk to book trips to Molokini and a helicopter ride/trip to hana, both of which were amazing. If you do a helicopter ride, go in the morning for the best views, and try to book with Blue Hawaiian. If you go to Moloking, try to go with either the Pacific Whale Foundation (which took us to Molokini and Lanai for snorkelling) or Four Winds II, which only went to Molokini, but had great food (burgers, chicken), and a very friendly staff. Both also stop at Turtle town, but you can't snorkel there on either of these boats. We did have some friend meet us and book a room at Papakea the last time we went. They are Hilton/Hyatt/Marriott type people, so they were a little leary about the condo. But since we raved so much about it, they booked a 1 bdrm oceanview as well. However, they booked through travelocity, I believe, and their room was terrible. It was on the first floor in the B building, and everybody walking by could see into their room. The mirrors on the frontroom wall were cracked and the furniture was tacky. They were extremely bummed, and completed right away to mgmt. Unfortunately, the resort was sold out the first night, so they couldn't move until the next day. They were moved to the 2nd or 3rd floor of the C building, and the room was 100 % better. I guess it all depends on who you book through, and which room you get.For the price, this is definitely the best find in Maui. It's only a 5 minute drive to Kaanapali beach, and the rooms are 1/2 the price of the beach front resorts on Kaanapali.
Get the Room You Want

It seems that a number of recent reviewers have not gotten the room they thought they were getting when they made their reservation. I have stayed at Papakea a number of times and it is possible to book a specific room - you just can't do it through Aston. There are a number of smaller property mgmt. companies that represent Papakea and they will reserve a specific room for you, frequently at a lower price. Two I know of are Maui Dreams Come True and Chase'N Rainbows.
I got exactly what I reserved and was very happy with the room, as well as the grounds and the front desk staff. My family and I had a wonderful time and will definitely stay here again.

We checked into this hotel and are room was not ready so they put us in a room that was infested with vermin. When I called the front desk I was told "we are in the tropics so this should be expected". Excuse me, I travel to Hawaii three times a year and never had a situation like this or a front desk attitude. We were moved the second night and given a box of candy. Upon check out I returned the box of candy and asked for a credit for one night and was told the manager would review our nightmare. Since it was not reviewed I contacted management and request one nights credit and received, I am sure from the maids cart:A complimentary coffee bad and a telephone message pad. I would, of course not recommend this property to anyone that is looking for a CLEAN place to stay on Maui.
Outdated and rundown room.

Upon arrival our group had problems with the reception desk. They had us in different rooms than what we were quoted. Then they said they could change it to what we were told, but for a price. The rooms (all of them) were in need of fresh paint, new carpet, updating all around.
There was dust/cobwebs all over the ceiling area. Some terrible electrical wiring rigged up. The grounds were beautiful and the location was great. Will not stay there again. Do yourself a favor, pay a bit more and be happy.
Aloha, Stayed here 12/31/03-01/04/04. It rained every day except the last day. This place is in a beautiful setting, we were upgraded upon check-in to a ocean front unit. The lanai opened up right to the beach, and you could hear the waves crashing at night. Papakea is a very quiet place. The amenities were great too. It is very convinient to Lahaina Town. Even though we were more impressed with Oahu than Maui, if we ever return to Maui, we will stay at Papakea again. The washer/dryers in each unit are nice too. Aloha and Mahalo.
At least it was clean
We stayed at The Aston at Papakea Feb. 10 - 18, 2004. Upon arrival, about 6:00 p.m., we found that they had us arriving on our actual departure date. Since I had written verification of our reservation, they did give us a room. Since the mix up was their mistake, & that they had no oceanview studios available, they said that they would "upgrade" our room. But they actually found the one last 'oceanview studio' that was being cleaned as we spoke. The room was definitely not a new unit. There were patches in the ceiling, the bathroom drawer handle was taped to hold it on, the bathroom towel bar fell off the wall and we were afraid to try to open one of the tall mirrored closet doors.(It was not on its track) But we didn't spend much time in the room anyway. We actually got used to 'our little home away from home".
The grounds are lovely, beautifully landscaped with flowers and koi ponds. Our room was an "Ocean View". Barely, but you could actually see the ocean. Our unit had tile floors which was a definite plus. I can't imagine having to walk around on sticky carpeted floors for a week. Our unit was a studio with lots of mirrors, but only lamps for light.
(kinda dark in there.)Housekeepping is efficient (if you remember to tip each day)! The front desk staff was okay, but not necessarily something to write home about. Now as we were checking out, the gentleman was extremely cordial. (where was he when we checked in?) The parking at the Papakea was absolutely terrible ! ! ! There are not enough spaces close by. If you return to your room after 8:00 p.m., good luck. There are spaces about 3/4 of a block away around the corner out by the tennis courts. We were told that alot of the spaces were being taken up by condo owners who left their cars there when they were not actually in residence. (They should be parking out by the tennis courts). The best thing about the Papakea was its location in referrence to things to do. It is only about 6 or 7 minutes away from Lahaina Harbor. That was great. If you choose to stay here and plan on renting a studio unit, don't expect the Ritz. You will have clean sheets & towels, a full kitchen and a washer & dryer at your fingertips. There is an in room safe (at $2.50 extra per day), and phone calls (even local ones) are extra.
great room with excellent view

We just got back this morning from the Papakea and this was our second time there. The first time was just about two years ago when we got married in Wailea. The first time we stayed at the resort we were in an ocean front condo on the bottom floor beside the canal. We had a wonderful time and stayed for four days. We liked the resort so we came back for two weeks from Jan 23 - Feb 6. The second time we stayed in an ocean view suite and I personally liked it better than the ocean front because we were three stories up. Everyone was very nice and we will be returning next year. The only complaints that I had were in regards to the chamber maids not reading the 'Do not disturb' signs and still knocking on the door. This bothered my husband more than I. Our flight out was to leave at midnight and we asked for a late check out. We went to the front desk and were told to check back at 7:30 in the morning on the day of our departure for an answer. This put us in a precarious position because we didn't know if we would be spending 12 hours in the car with all of our luggage on the day of our departure. As luck would have it, we could stay at the resort until the later evening for $80 but we had to relocate to a different room. This was when I really noticed the difference in grades of rooms. This new room was garden view on the first floor in the H building closest to the parking lot and lobby. It was totally run down and nothing like the other two condo's we had experienced. the carpet was seriously discolored in certain areas and if i had been assigned this room in the beginning I would definately have complained. It all depends what is available at the time you arrive. My advice would be to definately come to the Papakea, the people are friendly and the grounds are nice. Having all the amenities in your condo sure does come in handy. The barbeques are a plus and affordable ocean front is hard to find (especially with a nice beach!) Just make sure that you don't go really cheap! I think they would stick the cheap people in the less appealing suites. When we go again I will definately request the same condo. Mahalo!
Best Spot in Hawaii
My family has vacationed at Papakea every year for ten years now. Three years ago, I moved to Hawaii and I have visited many other hotels around the islands. I have yet to find any place as welcoming and relaxing as this "home away from home." The rates are great, it has a family environment, and it has everything you want for a relaxing vacation. I highly recommend this place!
Top Local Tips for Lahaina
Shopping in Lahaina is fun. Lahaina is quaint and used to be a whaling village. There are museums and restaurants, the ocean, the old Banyan Tree and of course some lovely shops. Check out the General Store for great prices on souvenirs/gifts. The coffee was the cheapest here, as well as the macadamia nut cookies, ukaleles, tikis etc. Shop around for Hawaii shirts though, as some stores are quite expensive compared to others.
Aquarium, Snorkeling and helicopter tour
We loved the Aquarium to get out of the sun for a day. THe helicopter tour was awesome, so cool. The snorkeling trip was great. Both my young kids got in the water to snorkel. Not scary at all.
Warren and Annabelle's magic show
I'm not a big magic show fan but this came highly recommended, so we went. Well, it turned out to be a lot of fun! I won't spoil it by saying much but the combination of good magic (not the cheesy, cut a woman in half magic) and a great sense of humor made for a really fun night. We did the dinner option as well -- the food is not bad (not the best) but the drinks are pretty good. One suggestion -- they over air-condition the lounge and the theater. Do not come to this show without a good, thick sweater, no matter how warm you normally are. It is freezing in there.
