I am teetering between rating this review a 2 or a 3 because in my opinion it was a 2.5.. We arrived at the Aloha Beach Resort on 3/3/04 and our first impression was that it was pretty nice. The hotel and grounds itself were perfectly acceptable and like all the other reviews have stated, the location is ideal. We had purchased a "junior suite" on expedia after reading rave reviews on this site. The room was just average, far from a suite, but large enough that you could sleep 4 (2 double beds and a hide-a-bed). The room view was gorgeous as it was ocean view (room 2312). As far as cleanliness goes, id rate this place a 1-2. I dont know why everyone raved about the cleanliness.. The carpets were old and in our room yellowed from water damage, the bathroom was extremely old, the bedding had holes in the velour blankets on both beds, and the "wet bar" area was less than spotless.
The hallways also looked like they hadnt been vaccuumed in a month. The furniture however was on the newer side and was acceptable. The water temperature was a big problem. Everytime I or my husband took a shower the water would go from scolding hot to ice cold and im not exaggerating, I could have gotten badly scalded. The beds were hard as rocks as well. All of this we could have lived with for the price ( I think we paid like 160/night vs other hotels that go for about 250/night) except for our experience on the last night. I read some comments on here before about cockroaches.. well we hadnt seen any until the last night when my husband went to get out of his bed and a nice sized roach was in the bed with him and if that wasnt bad enough, he pulled the covers back and there was another bug of some sort down at the foot of his bed. Also friday nights are club nights in the kuhio lounge and the music will keep you up on that side of the hotel until it stops at 2am.. it sounded like it was right outside our room...

We ate at the Palms (restaurant in the hotel) for dinner one night and the food was expensive and my meal was good although very cold..
wouldnt eat there again for the price.

All in all, if you dont care much about your room and all you want is a nice view for cheap, this is your place. On the other hand if you are like me who would like a place that was relatively clean and more modern with no roaches, dont stay here. My husband is SO not picky and even he wouldnt stay here again ( I think the roach did it for him).

We visited the Aloha Beach Resort in January 2004 and were delighted beyond belief. The rooms were nicely decorated and spotlessly clean.
The grounds were beautifully landscaped. The staff went above and beyond to be helpful and courteous. The location is ideal and it was near everything we wanted to do. Lydgate State Park borders the property and offers one of the most magical playgrounds I have seen for children and an enclosed lagoon that is perfect for family swimming. Be sure to pick up some fish food in the Aloha Beach Resort lobby to feed the brilliantly colored tropical fish in the lagoon. Best of all? The price was extremely reasonable.

Great location, great price

We stayed here in early February 2004 for a couple nights and the hotel was exactly what we expected. Its about 10 minutes north of Lihue and a couple minutes south of Kapaa on Kauai's east coast. The hotel has free parking and a comfortable open air lobby. There are two pools which, although not as luxurious as some Hawaiian hotels offer, are nice and clean. The beach is a few hundred yards from the hotel, so you're not right on top of it. But there is only a state park between you and the ocean. We had a garden view room which overlooked a koi pond and the lobby. I was afraid of noise because we were right next to the walkway from the lobby to our building, but there wasn't any problem. The room was clean and the furnishings were nice. We did have a rather large roach in the room, but those pop up even in the five star resorts in Hawaii. The staff was very courtious and both check in and out were a breeze.

This is not a luxury resort. If you want some place to lie around the beach and pool for 4 or 5 days, you'll probably be better off at the bigger resorts. However, if you want above average accommodations at a good price and a central location to all of Kauai's attractions, this is the hotel for you.

We spent a week at the Aloha Beach and were not disappointed in the least. It was a slow period at the resort and our room was the only one in our section that was occupied--nice and quiet. The room was a typical hotel room, nothing special, but clean. The grounds were very well kept. Lydgate Park's beach was very nice and my wife enjoyed their walking path. The hotel rents good snorkel gear for $5/day. Near Kapa'a, it's central location made it easy to explore all parts of the island.

We stayed here during the first week of February and found a great deal to like. The central location is a big plus, making day trips to south and north coasts easy to manage. All the staff were uniformly friendly and accomodating. We attended an island history and culture orientation given by the general manager that ought to be available to everyone as they arrive in Kauai. He is very well informed and passionate in his love for his island. We learned that the resort is situated on land that was owned by Kauaian royalty for hundreds of years. The remains of a sacred temple are on the grounds. The restaurant was a pleasant surprise and we enjoyed several meals there. The grounds are well-maintained and beautiful. The enclosed snorkel-swim area at Lydgate Park is a definite advantage. It's safe and great for beginners and the number and variety of fish species compares well with other beaches we tried. The water was a bit cool, but as a guest you can scoot up to the outdoor shower and then slide into the resort's large spa for a warmup. Two items kept us from rating the resort "excellent." I killed three cockroaches in the bathroom, but saw none after we reported it to the front desk for a spraying. And the carpets are in less than great shape.

We loved Aloha Beach

Stayed from Jan 23-29, 2004. We absolutely loved Aloha Beach. After staying at Uncle Billys in Kona and Hilo, it was paradise found. We got an ocean view and only paid for a garden view. This is more than your basic motel--it was beautiful. 6 day total including tax $479.

There were no bugs or moths, the pop machines and washers and dryers worked flawlessly. We had a coffee maker, hairdryer, ironing board and iron, and shampoo and soap provided each day. Our room only had drawers in the nightstand so I ended up putting some of them in the closet safe. From pictures I see other rooms have drawers.

Other reviews have told about how near the great snorkeling it is--the views and walking path. We swung in the hammock, sat in the hottub, ate dessert in the restaurant and sat by the pool in the romance of the tikki lights. Take advantage of their Hawaiian culture classes and the lei making class, which is new. We had a great time. I'd recommend it to anyone. Plan to return.

We spent two nights here in mid-Jan. and we enjoyed our stay very much.
The only complaints we had had to do with soda pop machines either being empty or not working and washing machines that were broke.
Everything else was great from our room to the grounds and the public area. The location at Lygate Beach also is a huge plus. Toss in a rate better then what I pay at home for someplace comparable and you've got a winner!

Great value, centrally located.

Stayed here for seven days. No complaints. Don't except the Hyatt Resort, but then again, you're on Kauai, go outdoors, enjoy the scenery! Staff was very friendly. Rooms were clean, bathroom was small but it didn't bother us. The only enclosed snorkeling area on Kauai is located right behind the resort. Many footpaths lead to the beach. Nice to wake up early and walk three minutes to watch the sunrise. Centrally located, Smith's Tropical Paradise is right across the street, downtown Kapa'a is only a few minutes away. Good breakfast buffet, parking is ample except on Friday nights when their nightclub opens up (only nightclub in Kauai). Didn't see any roaches during my stay, someone mentioned moths in the hallway, that's because it's an OPEN AIR HALLWAY. You're on a tropical island, what do you expect? Kids will love the Koi ponds, you can buy food to feed them. All in all, we will return, the money we saved was put to good use, kayaking Wailua river, boat ride to the Na Pali coast, etc.

Stay here ONLY if you are saving lots of $$

The island of Kauai is so incredibly beautiful and the natural landscaping so lush that the dirty ponds and green spraypaint on the barren parts of the grass seem like a real shock when you return to this hotel. Motel 6 in quality. With that said you might really enjoy the money you save and spend it on Kauai's fine dining, boat tours,etc.
Just be aware that other, ritzier, destinations are minimally 25 minutes away. So you will be in your car a bit if you drive to other resort restaurants, beaches, etc. In short I would stay here only if I were getting a superb deal. Kauai is so lovely, but it does rain a fair amount, and to me it's nicer to wait out a rainstorm under a really nice quality bar umbrella with a top shelf drink and still watch for whales, etc on the ocean. You won't be able to do that here, it's not luxurious at all. Just depends on your own priorities.

Baffled

I have to say I'm baffled by the number of wonderful reviews of this property. It was as a result of reading these that we chose this hotel and it was nothing like the reviews. It's in need of renovation. The carpets throughout the halls are dingy and musty smelling. The entrance to our room was filled with moths. Seriously imagine ducking to get in the door. The room was so, so until I went to the restroom to freshen up and encountered the first cockroach. From there it was downhill, everywhere we looked had them, the fridge, under the phone, etc and it was light. I could only imagine the number that would come out of hiding while we slept and it prompted us to immediately switch hotels. You can find much better deals throughout the island and it's my suggestion that you do.

Top Local Tips for Kapas

Need bug spray, for those who mosquitos like. Use mosquito spray daily before going into the wetter areas (water falls, etc). Get a rental car, you'll need it. Resturant: there are the fast foods, MacDonalds, Burger King, Pizza, etc., and many resturants to chose from, a little pricey though! Expect rain almost daily as this is the wettest island, and the most lush!

GPS This is one island where you don't need to spend the extra money for the GPS. We've added the GPS when we've been on Oahu and the Big Island. On Kauai, you figure your way around in one day due to one major road. The sights are easily marked with signs, so spend your money on something else.

Lighthouse and coffee plantation Go see the lighthouse, but make sure you get there before 4 or else its closed. we got there at 4:30 not knowing what time they closed. we were able to get good pics, but would have liked to see it up close. also the kauai coffee plantaion is fun to visit if you like coffee
