Room was not clean or clean smelling. We were moved to another room that smelled better, but was right on the highway. We finally ended up in a room that was suitable after three tries. Cleanliness is important to me and this motel was not clean. The carpets were dirty and one of the rooms wreaked of urine. On one of the nights that we were there, the police were called because someone was on the roof trying to break in to rooms. I would not stay there again.

Great Value - Great Location

My husband and I stayed at Plantation Hale from February 7 - 18, 2005. It was our first visit to Kauai, for our son's wedding. We found it to suit our needs very well - the kitchen, so we didn't have to eat out every day, the Coconut Grove Marketplace right across the street for handy shopping and meals, and the overall location made it easy to get anywhere else on the Island. The staff were friendly and helpful and it was nice to have the computer available to keep in touch with family and friends at home.
There is a beach close by and although not suitable for swimming, it was still good enough to walk on and to sunbathe. Good value for our money and we would definitely go back.

Honeymoom Paradise!

We stayed here the first week of August 1998 for our honeymoon. The rooms were spacious, the grounds gorgeous and we felt a little secluded. We walked to the beach. It was pretty rocky and the sand had lots of bark and rocks in it, so you need shoes. It's more of a take a walk beach, rather than a lay in the sand beach. We didn't use the pools. It was very close to the Coconut Beach Resort Luau which we attended and loved. Our rooms were very well cleaned and our room resembeled exactly the photos shown here. It could easily accomadate a family of four, though both beds are in one room. The doors are under an outdoor hall, so you can walk to your room and not get rained on. Everything was on one level so there are no steps or elevators to deal with. We stayed in room G4. It was great and I'd recommend it to anyone! I will be posting photos of my own soon.

Absolutely Wonderful Value

I just returned from my first trip to Kauai in February. Plantation Hale is a wonderfully valued condo in the heart of Kapaa. My accomodations were squeaky clean with all amenities included. Although the ocean is not truly visable, you can hear it and it is a short walk across a grassy area to sit and admire the waves. It is not a sunbathing or swimming beach but rather a contemplation/meditation area (or so I found it). The staff at Plantation Hale were welcoming and very friendly. There is a complimentary computer outside by the concierge for viewing any email or internet sites if you so wish. The beds are remarkably comfy! They even beat my new Serta mattress here at home.

Very satisfactory Accommodations

We just returned from or second trip to Kauai and were very happy with the accommodations provided by the Plantation Hale. We had a second-story one bedroom condo complete with kitchen. All utensils and cookware were provided. Our condo's lanai stretched the entire width of the unit and had patio door access in both the living room and bedroom. We were surprised to find our unit also had an ocean view which we loved. There were some small ants in the unit, but this is the tropics and bugs are a fact of life. Plantation Hale is right next to the Coconut Marketplace with its many shops and eateries. A terrific restaurant, Hukilau Lani, is just steps away. Kapa'a is centrally located as far as Kauai's main attractions are concerned. Princeville, Poipu Beach, and the Waimea Canyon are almost equidistant by car.

Great value for what you pay

We just recently stayed at Plantation Hale. Although not necessarily the fanciest accomodation on the island, for the money, this condo was well worth it. The rooms are spacious with fully equipped kitchens. Having a kitchen was nice, especially to store drinks and snacks in the refirgerator, and to cook a few meals (much cheaper than eating out every night). Plantation Hale couldn't be in a better location. It's located right in the middle of the island, a short drive to either side of the island. Right next to Plantation Hale is the Coconut Marketplace....having this place close by made shopping for gifts/souvenirs convenient. We also found it to be a very affordable place to eat. Their pizzeria is one of the best I've ever visited.
Although not right on the ocean, Plantation Hale is only a few hundred yards away from the ocean. I actually thought it being located slightly away from the beach was an advantage....it was much quieter than other accomodations right on the beach.
Plantation Hale is located right in the middle of a coconut forest, a beautiful sight. The grounds are well maintained and groomed. The rooms are well maintained and up to date. The staff is extremely helpful in helping you book tours.
The only drawback I could find was that it probably wouldn't be my first choice for a honeymoon destination. It's a great place for married couples or even families, but there's nothing special about this complex that would make it an entirely unique experience for a once in a lifetime event. In fact, I'd probably compare it more to a decent apartment complex in your local town. It's very similar to a 1 bedroom apartment. The complex doesn't offer the services a resort would, if that's what you're looking for. For that, you might want to consider one of the resort hotels like Marriott or Hyatt. If you're looking for a nice quiet clean place with a full kitchen then I would highly recommend it. For the price, you can't beat it. In Spring 2005 I will be visiting Kauai again on a honeymoon.....I probably won't be visiting Plantation Hale just because I'm striving for something more unique and romantic. But, if I ever return again with my wife and/or family, I'll definitely consider staying at Plantation Hale again.

Great for those on a budget

We visited Kauai for the first time December 3 - December 10, 2004. We had seen mixed reviews about this facility and were not sure what to expect. When we got there we were pleasantly surprised. Plantation Hale is in a very central location making it easy to get to the North and South parts of the island. Coconut Marketplace was just across the street so it was nice to stroll over after dinner to shop or get dessert. The condo is definitely great for budget travelers or those who don't need frills. We really liked having a full kitchen in there.

The only negatives is that we had a not so great experience when requesting maintenance on the toilet. It was constantly leaking so one night we called and they sent us someone with a plunger even though we said it was not backed up. We went through this a couple times before the front desk said they did not have staff on hand to repair the problem at night. The situation was resolved the next day.

Also, there were several occasions when housekeeping did not replace the face towels and bath mat. Other than that we enjoyed our stay and would recommend Plantation Hale to others.

This condo was SUITE! A little close to the main road, but other than that it was clean, cool and downright luxurious compared to the hotel in Waikiki! A little "off" location-wise, (no swimming beach) but close to the airport. Great value. Get a rental car and you're set!

Great deal for the money

My wife and I stayed here for two weeks in January and February 2004 on our first visit to Kauai. My mother spends 6-8 weeks here every fall.
We were very pleasantly surprised at how nice the refurbished unit we had was for the money we paid. An adequate kitchen, nice living room and a large bedroom with a very comfortable bed. This is a very central location to everything on the island. We could walk to the grocery store and restaurants, the beach was a short walk across the street, nice grounds and very nice and helpful staff.
This is not a luxury accomodation, but a very pleasant and quiet middle of the road condo. There are some permanent residents here.
Several pools, barbeque equipment and an activity desk were available.
We did not see the roaches and dirty rooms one person complained about, we had a great time here, and we travel a great deal

Great value for the money

We spent 6 nights there at the beginning of August and it's a great value and great spot to launch one's exploration of Kauai from. Central to a number of good restaurants that are driveable and a couple of good ones that are walkable. The Hukilau Lanai is tops and Eggberts rocks for breakfast. If you're looking for beach front or great views this is not the place for you but if you're looking for a good base to start your explorations from it's right on the money.

These Best Western condos are convenient, clean, and affordable. Not the last say in luxury -- the furniture is cheap, the shower is barely adequate, the beach (maybe 50 yards away?) is better to look at than swim in -- but if you're not too picky, it's great to have a one-bedroom condo for your stay. There are three pools and two jacuzzi's. The staff was perfectly nice and helpful (except the conceirge appeared to be making a personal call when I went to the front lobby because my phone call to her didn't go through...). The beds (we had two doubles) were not my favorite but I could sleep on them. The kitchen is reasonably equipped with microwave, dishes, pans, stove/oven, coffeemaker, and full-size refrigerator. There were two TV's in our unit (not that you should be wacthing TV here...) and a balcony. The living room area had a pull-out couch and small table, with enough space that 2-3 people don't feel at all cramped. Since eating out all the time in Hawai'i is expensive, I recommend the condo option so the you can cook for yourself... but not all the time! Wahoo's is a great restaurant for lunch and Kintara is best for sushi dinners -- both within walking distance. Kapa'a is a good place to stay as it is between the North beaches (check out Ke'e) and South beaches (some great snorkeling).

Book direct, get a better deal Book direct, don't use agencies or private owners. They can't control your housekeeping and ammenities if there are problems.

Coconut Grove Shopping Center is not a selling point A big selling point for a number of resorts and condo-hotels in Kapaa is their proximity to the shopping complex called Coconut Grove. What a disappointment! Same shlocky shops seen in many other places around that island and others - touristy crap, art galleries, and bad restaurants. Staying at a hotel in this area is quite convenient to traveling to the attractions of the north and south sides of the islands, but Kapaa does not have a whole lot to offer itself.
