Crowded, problem with elevators

This is a very crowded noisy hotel. The elevator banks are mobbed at all hours. There are packs of tour groups roaming the lobby and creating huge lines at the restaurant. No internet in the rooms, and no elevator in their 5-story parking garage.

Great Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here for two nights during late December 2003.

Found it to be a great hotel; staff was very friendly and upgraded us to a bigger room (facing the street; across from the ocean) when we showed our Starwood Preferred card. Conceirge was very helpful. The nightly live entertainment by the pool was great. The restaurant was ok.

It is across the street from the beach; not directly on the beach, but this was not a concern for us.

Enjoyed our stay; if back in Waikiki, would stay here again.

Average hotel

My husband and I spent three days at this hotel in June, 2003. In light of what we paid per night, I was a little disappointed. The hotel has a musty smell and the pool is a joke. Lucky for us, we were only at the hotel to sleep so it didn't cause a problem. If you intend to spend little to no time at this hotel, then it's a decent place to stay. If not, I'd go with another place -- there are plenty of other options.

Loved the Hotel

The room was clean. I would stay here again. The show was great. A good place to eat is Dukes across the street. Go down about 6 Hotels and it's in the back by the water. This is where i'll stay if i came back.
we were there 2-1-04 for 6 nites.

Treated well

February 18, 2004. Stayed at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani for our last night on the Hawaiian Islands. This hotel is located in a very nice location in Waikiki and was very busy. This said we were treated very well when we checked in and the Bell Person brought us our luggage must faster then I had expected (seeing the pile of luggage outside when we arrived). The rooms were small and a bit musty smelling but we were upgraded to an Ocean View for some reason (Maybe because I am a Starwood Preferred Guest). This gave us a balcony overlooking the pool and the ocean could be seen over the other hotels. One of the best perks we were provided and I have never been offered anywhere else was the availability of a hospitality room. Checkout was at 11:00 and they could not extend it because they were in a sold out state, however, they offered us a room that we could check out and use for 1 hour to shower and clean up before we had to leave for the airport. We arrived at 2:30 pm after going to the beach and were able to get prepared for our trip home. The eight hour flight was much more tolerable. I would definitely stay here again.

Old small rooms but no ants!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was worried after we booked at this hotel when I read some reviews that mentioned ants. There was no way I was staying in a room with ants! Well, I didn't have to. We were upgraded (thankfully, because I would hate to see the original room). Our room was clean enough to be free of ants, but we never unpacked our clothes into the drawers because they just didn't seem clean enough. We weren't expecting much, and that's what we got. We didn't stay in the worst wing, which looked like it was in drastic need of renovation (we accidentally ended up there once). I guess it is a case of getting what you pay for, as the rate we got was not bad. But I think next time I might pay the extra $ and go to the Moana Surfrider.

I must not have been at the same place!

I stayed at the PK January 20th - 24th and had a very pleasant experience. I wouldn't rate my room an A+, but it was a good solid B which is what I expected given the moderate price. I really enjoyed the central location and its proximity to the International Market. I never ate at the PK other than 1 room service breakfast that was quite good so I can't comment on their buffet (I don't like buffets anyway). The staff was very friendly and helpful and I really enjoyed the pool the one time I used it. If I were travelling with someone else to share the room cost, I probably wouldn't stay at the PK, but given the price and location I would stay there again on a solo trip like this one.

Disappointment is an understatement

Just returned from a stay at the Kaiulani from Jan. 17-21. We weren't expecting much given the reviews on this site, however, I was hoping that with the Sheraton name we could at least expect a minimum level of quality. Boy were we wrong. The room was small and old, as most other report. The meals at the buffet were horrible. I know not to expect too much from buffets, but we stayed at other hotels in Honolulu and Maui and the Sheraton's food was pure slop in comparison. The pool was small and poorly located. (Though this might not be a concern given the location of the beach across the street. Also, if you are traveling with children (or even if you aren't), be prepared for the hordes of prostitutes that hang out in this area every night. While it didn't feel dangerous, it wasn't exactly the environment that we were looking for. Overall, you're travel expenditures are better off being spent elsewhere.

t believe the Sheraton has such horrible rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
Luckily I only stayed for two nights at this Sheraton because it was absolutely horrendous - the room was smaller than the rooms in NYC hotels and it was in need of major renovation. The word that comes to mind is 'shabby'. One would expect that it being a Sheraton it would at least be clean but that it was not. I can't belive that Sheraton would associate its name with a room of such low caliber. I did ask for a room change but I was told that because I had gotten a special rate through priceline I could not even pay for an upgrade. The staff was not hospitable or friendly and I was glad to leave there. By the way, afterwards we went to the Waikiki Beachcomber where the room was much bigger and cleaner but also in need of some renovation. I don't know how priceline rates its hotels but these were definitely not 3-star rooms by AAA standards.

Kaiulani-Thumbs UP!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Princess Kaiulani from January 15-18, 2004. We received an upgrade from a standard room to a room with an ocean view without any problem. The room itself was fine, the bathroom appeared to have been recently remodeled. The room was clean although the carpet appeared worn in a couple spots and also had a couple stains. The staff was very courteous and prompt. Maintenance was called to our room once and the problem was corrected quickly, we also received a call from the hotel apologizing. I thought the food was overpriced within the hotel and only ate lunch there once. There are a variety of restaurants to choose from that are near the hotel. Overall, I would recommend the Kaiulani.

This hotel may be the worst of the 4 Sheratons on Waikiki. Checking in (daytime), there were only 2 or 3 clerks, the check-in process took 10+ minutes, due to the slow cmptr system. Within a few minutes, a line of people quickly formed behind me... yet, the same pple were (still) checking-in, and no new agents were to be found. A Manager popped in and out of the back, but offered no help to the agents, nor sent more pple out! I avoided the front desk whenever I could... but even cashing some traveller's checks proved to be a 10 minute 'experience.' And the agents, when you finally got to the front desk, did not seem happy to serve you! Sort of... 'take the money and run' attitude. I am a frequent visitor to HNL but I will avoid the "PK" -- not a pleasant stay!

Top Local Tips for Honolulu

Don't miss this! The Polynesian Cultural Center, worth the money and in our opinion something you should not miss! Shopping, if you like to barter, go to the International market place, you can get some great deals. ABC stores are good also and just about on every corner.

Sight seeing Do take the helicopter trip around the island

Better Food Avaiable Elsewhere Don't eat here. The buffet prices are really unreasonable. Take a walk around the block on the 1st day. There are many small restaraunts that offer a reasonable $3.95 breakfast.California Pizza Kitchen down the street was a favorite, as was the Cheesecake Factory (which is actually a restaraunt, and not just a bakery for desserts). All these are in walking distance, and are better and more reasonably priced.
