Absolutely the best vacation we've ever had! Hotel staff was courteous, always smiling and went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect! The hotel restaurants had excellent food with breathtaking views of the ocean and Diamond Head. We look forward to visiting again soon!

The Outrigger Reef was an excellent choice to stay. With local shops and be surrounded by friendly people, I choose to stay there every time I visit Hawaii. With Mc Donald's across the street and Starbucks and Jamba juice, things were a lot easier so we can just get something to eat or even the restaurants there and chill at the pool or on the beach. It was great.

We enjoyed our stay at the Outrigger Reef after a 10 day cruise with Norweigan Cruise Lines. We especially enjoyed the Shore Bird Restaurant for dining with cooking our own fish/steak. Also the beach was great, and the hotel is within walking distance to shops. The staff was professional and helpful.
Better than average!

Great beach front location, also close to restaurants, shops etc. Rooms were spacious and we got a sea view from the balcony. The view over the swimming pool with all the torches lit around it on an evening was a particular highlight. Not the most prestigious hotel in Waikiki but still a good choice.

Solid 3 Star Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
A solid 3 Star Hotel. Great location right on Waikiki Beach, with a large pool and great eating selections for a wide range of prices. Tip #1: Great rates available on Expedia (Under $120/night) Tip #2: Also, has a great pool bar with cheap Mai Tai's Tip #3: Pick up a coupon book in the lobby and you can save a few bucks on the awesome breakfast buffet at the Shorebird (an awesome price and incedible view)

Rooms were clean, but nothing to write home about & we also ran into sand bugs on the tables, etc.. may have just been our room.

Hotel Great, Room Terrible

Went for a 3 island honeymoon in Oct. 2000 that began in Oahu. After the 12 hour plane ride, we were looking for some rest and relaxation.
Of course, driving into Waikiki sets you off right off the bat. Our "partial ocean view" room was hardly what we were expecting. Unless the building 20 feet from our window was the ocean, this definition meant that if we stuck our video camera out the window the 4 inches that it opened and turned it to the left, we could get video of the ocean and then replay it for our viewing pleasure. The room was cramped and malodorous and the shower door didn't open all the way without hitting the toilet.. nice walk-in closet though.. weird use of space. Then we went to the pool for a dip in the hot tub after our long trip and after about 15 min, we got kicked out, told the pool closed at 10 pm. I don't know, I've stayed at a lot of hotels and one of the best perks of an outdoor pool is coming back after a long day of sight seeing and taking a late night dip in the pool. Other than that, the hotel itself was very, very nice. Beautiful breakfast location at the Shore Bird and great fresh fruit. And the hotel is right on the beach at Waikiki, so if you are never planning to be in your room, this is the place. We are going back in August and we were going to stay there again, but this time with an Ocean Front room, because we did like the hotel itself, but then we realized that the cost is so outrageous, there are many other better hotels to choose from in that price range.

Great Location

My family and I recently spent 8 nights at the Outrigger Reef in June 2003. We were told we would have a city view room, but as it turned out, our room overlooked the pool which was very nice. We also had a sleeper sofa in addition to two double beds. The hotel was very clean, the people were friendly, and the location was great. Because we had several hours left after check-out, the hotel supplied us with a courtesy room to prepare for our long flight home. The activities desk made planning tours and renting a car very uncomplicated. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Oahu. Mahola to all the staff at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach.

Great Hotel, but starting to slip

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just came back from 12 days at the Outrigger Reef. This is our 4th straight year at the Reef and we saw a decline the past 2 years. The problem the past couple of years was some of the staff. This trip, a couple of the front desk "boys" were condescending and kind of rude. We always book an ocean front room which is the highest priced. I did not like the view this year and when I asked the front desk to move us they gave me the run-around. After 10 minutes on the phone they finally gave me a room with a little better view. The bathrooms need to be torn out and rebuilt. There is no room there and the drains in the shower fills up to your ankles while showering. Although we love the Reef, I think it will be awhile before we go back. Oh, the manager never seems to be around when you ask for him.

Loved Loved The Outrigger Reef

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Outrigger in 2001 for our 20th anniversary and were so very happy. We requested a partial ocean view and got more. Our room was on the corner with 2 balconies and a big king size bed. It was so nice to wake up in the morning and see the ocean. We were so comfortable with the staff and no matter what we asked of them they had an answer and had it with a smile. We are coming back this June and we are once again staying at the Outrigger Reef. Thank you for making our stay so nice.

UPDATE of previous review

from tahoedee
Just wanted to update previous review. Not only did Outrigger promise to refund a part of my stay, they actually did it and they did it fast! Excellent customer service! This is the ONLY hotel I've ever had even contact me when I've had a problem. Just be sure to ask for the upgraded rooms until they finish the remodel! Good work, Outrigger! I will stay with you again!

We stayed at the Outrigger Reef On the Beach two years ago. We loved our stay there. We make a trip to Hawaii every two years. First time we ever stayed at the Outrigger on The Beach, we we very pleased, in fact we have just purchased rooms (3)for seven nights again. This time there will be 3 couples and we are taking our Pastor and His wife. It will be thier first trip to Hawaii and I wanted them to enjoy it so I knew I couldn't go wrong with the Outrigger Reef on the Beach. I don't think I could have chosen a better hotel without going bankrupt...lol. Seriously, they have reasonable rates.

Great Beach Hotel

Just returned from Hawaii, and can't say enough about our stay at the Outrigger Reef in Waikiki.. Our second time at this Hotel and it seems to me it just gets better... Outstanding service and veryclean and well kept property..Every Employee we came in contact with, were just the most helpful and friendly people...I had made reservations for a partial oceanview room and was upgraded without asking to a full oceanview...from our bed we had a full view of Diamondhead...the Shorebird is a must for Dinner at least once while at the Reef, Shorebird also has great entertainment @ night. also the beach at the Reef is very nice, with great views and numerous beach services. We took a sunset cruise on the Outrigger Catamaran andreally enjoyed the evening. If you get a chance to visit China Town a great restaurant is the "Indigo", its a euro/asian menu and for some might be a little pricey...but had one of the best meals of my Life at this Restaurant..and my final comment, when going to HAWAII, I have found it is worth every extra minute you can spend in shopping for the best deals on Hotels, airtravel, car rentals etc.....we saved from 50% to as much as 75% on our bookings.

Excellent beachfront value in crowded Waikiki

from A TripAdvisor Member
Even without its jaw-dropping views of Diamond Head and the ocean, my decent-sized room, with a small but efficiently designed shower-only bathroom, would be a good value in this prime location right on the sand. Meticulously organized lobby shops carried everything I needed, and public areas were lively but not chaotic as in some big hotels. Pool is rather dark and not ideally located, though the nice beach is right next to Fort DeRussy park. Overall, the Reef is great for a lively vacation in an ideal spot, perhaps the best value on Waikiki beach.

Top Local Tips for Honolulu

See it all !!!!!!! Must see Hanauma Bay, Eat at the Cheesecake factory and see the blue Hawaii Elvis show !!!!

Good place to eat Great Buffet dinner at the Pacific Beach Hotel. The have a large Aquarimium and they have a diver that will come down for $$ to wish anyone in your pary happy birthday etc. The food was so good. The best prime rib ever and my son loved the all you can eat crab. Will go again..... It is not cheap over $30 per person put we used a coupon and received 25% off. Worth the money!

Saving on beach rentals. Get up before 9 am and you can rent your chairs for $20 for the day (till 5 pm) from the guys with the yellow umbrellas located right outside the Outrigger Reef. Otherwise the boys down the way, with the green umbrella's will charge you $35 for the same thing. If you get up past 9 am they will still beat the green umbrella crew price by $5 ($30 / day). If you're planning on lounging on the beach for the whole week, both groups have weekly rates.
