Top Local Tips for Honolulu
Hometown favorites If you want to eat the way Hawaiians do, try the Rainbow Drive-In on Kapahulu just north of this condo hotel. It serves the famous plate lunches along with excellent hamburgers and chili. Barack Obama grew up eating at this nostalgic location. Parking is at a premium and there's not a lot of seating. So go on off hours. A plate lunch with two scoops of rice, macaroni salad, shredded cabbage, meat and gravy is $6.90. It's a lot of food and any of the meats are good - BBQ pork, boneless breaded chicken, breaded mahi mahi, etc. We also recommend Leonard's Bakery just a little farther north on Kapahulu for malasadas - Portuguese donuts. It's a donut without a hole that's doughy on the inside and crispy on the outside. You can also get them with fillings. But you have to get them to go. There's no seating other than a couple of benches outside.
