We rate The Breakers very high because although it is not a modern luxury hotel, we had a very comfortable and happy stay. It is close to everything in Waikiki but is lovely and quiet; its serenity is extraordinary given its situation.
We really enjoyed its mid 20th century ambience and were not all discommoded by the absence of the usual hotel room service - though the staff were attentive and helpful. It is very close to supermarkets and restaurants, and the kitchenette gives you freedom to relax and holiday at your own pace.
It is just one block from the beach and a beautiful park and the bar is great fun.
We'll be going back.

Top Local Tips for Honolulu

Great local garlic-oriented Japanese restaurant Irifune Restaurant at 563 Kapahulu is a fantastic place to eat - moderately priced and awesome food (if you like spicey and garlicky). They have what Iconsider to be the best maguro poke I have ever had anywhere! The white miso soup is a stand-out that makes other miso's soups seem the pale and bland thing they are considered. Also try the the tofu and mushroom appetizer - again, it does for tofu what their miso soup does for miso. Expect a wait on weekend nights. They don't supply alcohol, but have wine and beer glasses if you bring your own (which the locals do - a bottle or a six pack). parking is across the street, but this is walkable from any Waikiki hotel.

Good Local Chinese Restuarant Try The Golden Duck. A few blocks from the Convention Center. Very local, food is great and so are the prices.

Eat at the Japanese restaurant on site - Suishiko This open air restaurant offers terrific suishi and Japanese dishes. Highly recommend.
