Great hotel in Waikiki

We stayed here over Easter weekend, with a group of 13. We had 3 rooms and had a terrific time. The hotel was very attractive with a far-east/polynesian theme. The pool area is great-on the ground floor with beautiful landscaping. The on-site massage was very relaxing. The rooms were ok, with comfortable beds. We had a full kitchen in one room, with minimal utensils however. We saved a bundle cooking breakfast and having most lunches in our room.
The location was perfect-right behind the Hyatt hotel and two blocks from Waikiki beach. We did not feel that it was in a "seedy area". It was in the heart of Waikiki!
The staff was very pleasant and helpful. I think for the price, this was the best bargain we have found in Honolulu! We have been here many times and will return here.

We stayed in Sept. 2003 and found the rooms to be run down and just plain dirty. Yellow dried liquid on bathroom walls and the "kitchenette", well questionable at best. The air conditioner leaked onto the carpet. We changed rooms into a "suite" but it had a funny insulin type smell to it and was still not really clean. I recommend shelling out a little more cash and being satisfied instead of just settling on your Hawaiian vacation.

You get what you pay for at this cheap hotel. The rooms are small, the staff are unhelpful and the location is seedy, that is unless you need the services of the street-walkers in the adjacent red light district.
Then you may get more than you pay for!

Staff make the difference

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights in february of 2004. We reserved a 'deluxe suite' and requested a pool/ocean view but none was available on check-in. Our room faced the street and had a double bed which was disappointing. The front desk called 5 minutes after we got to our room and offered us a new room the next night, with a king bed. We switched, the staff moved all of our luggage, and the room was this hotel's version of the penthouse suite: very nicely furnished, large, with 4 lanais that overlooked the city/mountains. A very nice accomdation. As other reviewers have noted, the hotel has a nice pool area and is rather spartan in amenities, but the staff does put out a good effort and the place is comfortable and the location is convenient.

The Aqua Bamboo Hotel is recently renovated from the former Marc Hotel.
The address is 2425 Kuhio Ave., local telephone 808-922-7777. Manager: Joseph Yamaoka. I author the Driving & Discovering Hawaii guidebooks and stay in Hawaii hotels at every price level. I gave the Bamboo an excellent rating because the price was outstanding, the room sophisticated and well laid out, and the service very efficient. There is a washer and dryer on each floor on the service balcony, much appreciated beacuse of wet and sandy towels and clothes. I loved the little pool area because it's of lovely design and usually I was the only one there despite a nearly full house. Free internet connections are located in the very cool lobby. Upper floors, as in any hotel, quieter than those nearer street level. I agree there is some shabbiness, strange considering all the efffort that went into the remodel. E.g.:the door to our room was very beat up, yet the interior was as attractive as many Hawaii hotels of great repute at 3 times the price. The Bamboo's lobby [with large plasma screen TV] is hip and fun, and in our room there are a lot of great features, including custom designed furniture, crown moldings, quality carpet, glass brick shower stall, a double sink curved vanity, slatted wood bathroom ceiling. With an "official" summer rate of $145 for the very spacious room [significantly cheaper on the internet], it includes a kitchenette without a microwave, a sitting area with TV, sofa and desk, a separate bedroom that is behind a louvered wood shutter wall, three sliding glass doors for great ventilation, a lanai, and the room is located high enough above the street not to be too noisy. The problems here were just cosmetic, but I filled out an opinion form my third day, and the problems were fixed, so high marks go to the Bamboo for quick response. The rooms are a very good value, tastefully decorated in a kind of Metropolitan Home magazine sort of modern Asian theme, and for my needs [computer, photo equipment, paperwork, my need to cook], just about perfect.

Had Better, had worse

We decided at the last minute to fly to Honolulu over the Christmas break. While flights were no problem, there were very few hotels available anywhere in Waikiki. We knew nothing of the Aqua Bamboo but really didn't have too many other options. The hotel is a just a couple blocks away from the beach but, depending upon room location, you may not be able to see it from your room - our room looked directly into the hotel next door. The king size bed was really two twin beds pushed together. We considered moving to a room with two separate twin beds but the view was even less desirable than what we had. However, the room was clean (except for the refrigerator), the staff was friendly and the price was reasonable.

Did the job...

We just came back from Oahu and stayed at the Aqua Bamboo for the second time. Both times we had very good service from the time we walked in the front door, till we checked out. It's nothing spectacular, but for us, it did the job and that was a place to sleep and breakfast in the morning. The rooms were kept up well, even though years of wear do show in certain areas. The compalints I've read from other previous guests sound too much like someone who is use to staying at "The Ritz" but not willing to pay the price. We'd definitely recommend the Aqua Bamboo to people on a budget and not into all the "foo-foo" that fancier hotels provide. I'd give them a B+.....

Ignore the critics

Ignore the negative reviews! That's my advice. My wife and I just returned from Honolulu, yesterday, October 23. We stayed at the Aqua Bamboo Hotel for 16 nights and loved it. We had a great room overlooking the pool with two double beds, three lanais, and a kitchenette. The location is perfect with restaurants, the beach, food stores, bus service, etc.-- all easily avbailable. Of course there is street life, and some of it is unsavory, but that's what makes it fun, after all, these are real people living their real lives. And it's safe too, as long as you're not roaming the streets at 2:00am. A bonus at this hotel is that the people who run it are lovely, friendly folks.
Search the internet, get a good rate, then book yourself a room (overlooking the pool) at the Aqua Bamboo hotel!

great hotel/great rate

Was in Waikiki for work in June (I know, I know) and decided to stay on my own for a few days of va-ca after job was completed. Walked around Waikiki looking for cheaper accomodations than the $110/night Radisson that my company had booked me, and was delighted to find Bamboo, 2 or so blocks from the beach, a boutique hotel with a nice pool, ocean view, quiet enough, rack rate $145, got it for $50 a night. A steal.

Top Local Tips for Honolulu

many good inexpensive places to eat many good inexpensive places to eat, just gotta look for them. If you stay here and go grocery shopping, walk out of the hotel to the left and about 2 1/2 blocks up is a grocery store rather then the Conveince store. Better selection same prices. Gallon of milk is only $7.00 lol Cheeseburger in Paradise isnt worth it. 2 basic burgers, one order of fries, and Iced tea and a water cost $27.00

Pick up pamphlets at the airport I would recommend picking up some travel pamplets at the aiport if you need more ideas on what to do or see around the island. Also, the pricing on inter-island flights have dropped because of price wars which makes this a great opportunity to do day trips to the other islands for a good price.

watch your valuables! do not bring anything to a trip, you wouldn't mind losing.
