Naniloa a bummer

from A TripAdvisor Member
Spent 2 awfull nights at Naniloa 9/30/04 and 10/1/04. This hotel deserves a zero star rating. All forms of service from hotel front desk through restaurant are minimal at best. This hotel has its original 1950's decor. While this sounds a bit retro, it takes on a different meaning when you realize that the furnishings have had no maintenance or replacement since the 1950's. In particular, the carpet in all rooms is terrible. Besides the awful carpet smell, there are so many stains it is hard to tell what the original color was. I was in 3 different rooms and all had the odor of mold spores mixed with cleaning liquid scent. Also, the restaurant is an experience. Its more of an aviary/restaurant combination. On the second morning I entered the restaurant and saw 25 dirty tables with dishes and left over food. Then I also saw birds flying in and out of the restaurant and eating off the plates. One busboy was working in the restaurant that morning. A prime example of the lack of service at the Naniloa. The only reason we stayed in Hilo was to have better access to Volcanoes National Park. Overall, I was not impressed by the Naniloa Hotel or the town of Hilo. I gathered literature on Bed and Breakfasts in the area for our next trip to the Big Island.

I read all the reviews before arriving too and was apprehensive but the Naniloa Resort was better than expected. True, it is worn in some places and not spotlessly clean (by that I'm referring only to the bathroom floor) but the service and value was outstanding. Highly recommend the Sandalwood Restaurant, somewhat pricey (entrees avg. ~$20/dinner) but the food, the presentation, and the employees, and especially the view of Hilo Bay if you eat outside is worthwhile! Beautiful location. If we return to Hilo we would be happy to stay at this hotel again.

Hawaii Naniloa Hotel - Thumbs Up !

We based our trip in Kona at the Kona Seaside (wouldn't recommend it), but stayed here when did our trip around the island. At $69 a night it was a bargain ! Nice view and hotel grounds. We were there on 4th of july and we sat waterfront to watch the fireworks being shot off from very closeby. The room was clean, the AC worked, and it was a pleasant stay. I would recommend it for anyone on a budget who needs a nice place to stay in Hilo.
By the way...don't eat Uncle Billy's restaurant next door...the slowest and worst service EVER ! and the food was way overpriced.

t stay here

When I see reviews that say that this hotel was okay, I am a bit surprised. The view is nice, as it is right on the water. But there is not a beach. The room is worn, with mold and torn carpet, beat up chairs etc. The hotel looked like a cheap motel where you should be paying $29 a night. Stay at a local B&B or pick another hotel.

Beautiful on the outside ,just enough on the inside 7/10-23,2003

Everything else was GOOD! Quiet and relaxing not fancy rooms just enough to sleep and enjoy Hawaii .Nice buffet for breakfast in Hotel .Sweet staff ,especially parking lot attendent 'MANO'

Better than expected

I read reviews on this site before we left for our anniversary stay planned by our daughters. I was expecting far worse after the writeups I had seen. We stayed 7 nights and was very pleased with our stay. For the very reasonable cost of the rooms, we were not expecting a 5 star establishment. All we were looking for was a clean, safe place to call our base to rest. Most of our time was spent exploring the island. We loved the Motel and would gladly go back again.

Was More then others say....

I tried to change our reservations after reading commets on here. Had no luck, But boy am I glad I didn't. The View was Great, the pool was great, the service was Great. We needed a extra blanket and had in 3 min. We staying in a NON smoking room on the 8th floor was a deluxe room. Only was 89 a night. Cheap for Hawaii!!! Walked right out to the ocean and snorckled right on the property. Maybe I am just a low maintance girl??? Was very nice for my family and I!!

very dated hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at this hotel from Feb 7th to Feb 12th. It was very dated.
The room was not very clean and really needed a fresh coat of paint.
The people working at the front desk appeared very bored and unwilling to help anyone. I will not stay here again unless the hotel receives some sort of remodeling.

What a rip off

We stayed here for 1 night in a overnight package and it was horrible. I have never refused to stay in a room or to request a change until we went to our room at the Naniloa. When we opened the door I felt like we were in a crime scene right out of CSI. The floors stained EVERYWHERE the chairs were spotted and soiled and smelled. The bathroom had hairs in the sink, tub and floor. The toilets were just plain disgusting. Our next room was a little better but not much. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT stay here if you can help it. This hotel was probably a grand lady in her time but neglect and wear has taken it's toll and it's time for a facelift...better yet a BODY LIFT.

great view of Mauna Loa but......

We were there from Jan. 13 - 18, 2004. My fiancee had already bought a package deal from expedia when I began researching the hotel so I was ready for the worse. The best part of the hotel from the 8th floor on the bay side is the most beautiful view of Mauna Kea at sunrise. The room in the package was on the other side and I would not have stayed in it. I went to the desk and the manager was there this time (a clerk was there when we got the key to check out the assigned room) and I told him that I was not pleased with the room and the comments I had read on the hotel on the internet. I asked to see the bay side rooms and how much for the upgrade. The clerk had told me $20 and he said $15 when I told him I would write some positive things if he gave me a better deal. Well, the positive things are the view, free parking and close to the airport. The negatives are : the middle elevator stinks from someone urinating in it awhile back (info from someone on the front desk), both double beds had mattresses where the springs could be felt (we took the bedding from one bed and folded it for cushioning but the pillows were very comfy, the toilet and shower worked fine except the tub drain would fill up while showering, the sliding patio door was hard to slide, the carpet is old and I would not walk barefoot on it. I would not go back to this hotel or probably to Hilo. The volcano is only about 30 miles away so you can go back there more that once since it is close and the Tsunami Museum is a must also. There are several waterfalls to see and the Lava Tree park is interesting. We drove to Kona and it is a tourist trap and lots of traffic. But the circle drive around the island and the side roads are worth seeing.

Top Local Tips for Hilo

If staying in Kona; visit the Volcano and then drive back the same way you came. Also the Orchid farm was great!! but next time I visit the big Island I'll visit the Volcano and then drive back the same way I came rather then driving through Hilo.

If you can find someplace else to stay, do it. The Hilo Hawaiian is a much, much better hotel for about the same price. Also, there are enumerable bed and breakfasts in the Hilo area. This would be close to my last choice and/or recommendation to anyone I liked or respected. If you DON'T LIKE someone, recommending this hotel would be a mean prank to play on them.

Cafe Pesto- Exceptional!!!! Try the White Pineapple at the Farmers Market- To Die for!!!!!!
