Top Local Tips for Savannah
Dont stay at the Westin! THe Westin SAvanah Hotel is a beautiful hotel with the prettiest grounds I have ever seen. But if you expect anything more, you will be charged. After paying $239 per night, I was dissappointed that they charge $2.50 for a small bottle of water, no continential breakfast (only one small high priced coffee shop that sold muffins & expensive drinks). What really made me mad was on the day of our check out, our invoiced showed that we were charged $16.05 per night EXTRA on our credit card for Hotel service fees. WHen I asked what it was for, the front desk person told me it was a fee they charged that allowed them to offer ammenities to their guests such as the golf course, spa, parking, newspapers etc... (but all of these ammenities has a BIG price tag on them on top of the service fee, except the newspaper ) Also, free wireless internet in the lobby, (but I could not connect) and if you want it in your room, you must pay $9.95 per day for use... In my opinion, this hotel will nickel and dime you until you are BROKE! There was DEFINATELY no display of Southern Hospitality at this hotel.. If you want a pedicure at the spa, the fee is $95.
Parking The city is very small and difficult to get parking. Very frustrating because the business' have the lots/garages but there is no access to them during the evenings or weekends. They are very limited on parking so watch the signs carefully; around the squares you can park on each side but not the rounded corners. You'll get a ticket...I got one $15. They have some places along the streets which are free parking for 2 hours; they mark your tires w/some chalk mark and if they come back they can tow your car. Rent a small car and if you are in a group it is better to try to pile in one vehicle.
Eating out at Savannah River Beyond the river walk are alot of excellent restaurants with competitive prices and menu offerings. The Chart House is a popular seafood eatery for dinner but reservations are necessary due to the crowds of tourists and frequent locals. About a block from the river walk area, the historic district has too many restaurants near the Doubletree Hotel and Garden Inn to mention. So check the Savannah visitor bureau website for more information on seasonal festivals and popular eateries.
