Top Local Tips for Savannah
Taxi VS. Car Rental A weekend car rental is well worth it. Cabbies charge an extra $1 - $5 per extra person. I was traveling with four people so it became very costly. Hertz has a weekend special for Sat - Sun. Very affordable. Also, gas was about $2.82 per gal for regular. I'm used to paying $3.35 per gal fo regular so i was more than happy to pay that. We drove 115 miles and only had to pay $17 for half a gallon. Well worth it a car rental! Also, the tourist maps you get do not have all streets listed. So you can easily get a little lost. Don't depend on Hertz to give you a real street map
Great Dining in Savannah Our favorite restaurants - The Pirates House - Outstanding Crab Bisque; everything else our foursome ate was very good also. Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House - Go hungry!!!!! They seat you at tables of 10 and there must have been 15 plates of food on the table when we were seated including really good fried chicken, beef stew, sausage and red rice and plenty of vegetables, plus dessert! Need to take a good walk after you eat!!! Please note they DO NOT TAKE CREDIT CARDS. The Olde Pink House - a wonderful white tablecloth dining experience! The food is very good (loved their salad with the champagne vinegarette) and the service is too. The dress is dressy casual on up and the prices are reasonable. Loved the atmosphere of this old house. I recommend reservations as this place gets very busy. The Planter's Tavern, in the basement, has music, a bar, and some tables for dining; it was very crowded and noisy so don't plan to eat in the Tavern.
