Top Local Tips for Savannah
Too hot for horses My husband and I moved to historic downtown Savannah recently and were appalled to see the conditions the horse are forced to work in. This issue has been a topic multiple times in the local media. When interviewed, the tour companies claim they treat their horses like family and do not work them in extreme weather conditions. This is not true. Today for example, the high is 96 degrees, heat index 102 and this does not reflect the true heat felt on the streets. We just measured the temperature, right on our street, and it reads 107.5 degrees. Today, within a 5 minute period, at least 3 separate tour companies have gone by with horse drawn carriages. In one case, one horse alone was pulling 8-10 people. Throw in the weight of the carriage and that is one heavy burden and it is being carried by horses that were not bred for this. In general the continued use of horses for this is an outdated, romanticized ideal that has seen its day. That aside, right now the immediate concern is saving these horses from suffering and dying in the street. Please note, this is not an issue isolated to Savannah, the treatment of these horses is prevalent in Charleston, NYC and elsewhere. There are many great trolley rides, pedicabs and walking tours here in Savannah. Come visit our beautiful city but please, give the horses a break ;) Warm Regards
