Great experience all around

from sbarber
I stayed at this Hilton for a conference, checking in on a Sunday and checking out on a Tuesday. I was really nervous after reading all the horrible reviews, but my stay could not have been more pleasant. I arrived at noon and they checked me in right away (I had called ahead to request early check-in). My room, #1501, had everything I had requested - king-sized bed, non-smoking - and a nice view of the pool and the downtown skyline. I spent a lot of time in the room, and it was quiet throughout my entire stay. I had no problems with climate control or with the odors mentioned by other reviewers. The bed was very comfortable, and the shower had great water pressure.

All of the staff I encountered were very pleasant. The doormen were always ready to assist me with directions or in hailing a cab, and the other staff - room service waiter, concierge, restaurant staff - were extremely friendly and ready to please as well.

I also enjoyed the Le Cafe and Cafe Express restaurants. Both were reasonably priced for in-hotel dining, the service at Le Cafe was fast and efficient, and the food was good.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again!

Poor service

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was the worst hotel I stayed in 15 years of travel. The service was horrible. I was told a mistruth by the front desk about my accomadations (which despite advanced reservations were not available).I was offered a suite living room with a double roll away bed. When I returned from dinner I had instead a twin bed with no back support. Hilton said sorry. I asked for pillows which the front desk said they were busy. I didn't get them. I could have ahad a much better sleep at a lot less expensive hotel.

Running from Rita straight into a Hurricane

from A TripAdvisor Member
I recently fled Texas on the last fly out of houston before hurricane rita came to town. I went online to Delta and after selecting my flight I followed the suggested links for a rent a car and Hotel. I packed all my important papers and my handicapped mother and we were out. Who would have known that we were actually headed into the eye of the storm.
After arriving at the hotel only to find out that there was mix-up with my room, and no smoking rooms were available at the time I checked our luggage the bellhop and went to have lunch. After checking with the front desk several times I finally got a room thinking by luggage would arrive soon. After several hours I call the front desk to ask what happened to my bags after being placed on hold several times and transferred several more times I finally was able to speak to someone who found my luggage. I was offered no remorse I asked what happen and no one could give me an answer. Since all my reservation were done throught the internet I was told that my credit card was on file for the valet parking I had no problem with that however placing the card on file once I thought would be enough wrong. After several other incidents constantly being call for my credit card after the third time I asked if there was a problem it was explain that basically I was being treated as a second class citizen because I used the internet at a $155 a night I was truely disappointed. 9.95 internet charge, trying to extend my stay by another because our flight was cancelled brought even more rudness. I can't believe I paid over $500 to be treated so badly. When we finally checked out I call for a bell hop to assist me with our luggage so I could wheel my mother out to the front so I could go a pick up the vehicle from the garage. The bell hop dropped the luggage at the front instructed someone else to watch my mother and the luggage and then turned to my a repeatly said he's going to finish that means I'm through. After the third time I politely let the young man (kalif)know that I had every intent of giving him a tip that was the reason I asked his name I just need to go to the front desk for change. I travel all over the United States I will never stay at another Hilton.

Major disappointment

from A TripAdvisor Member
The halls smelled of mildew and ground-in ashes. The room was extremely humid, even with the AC set on 68. The bathroom fan did not work, adding to the discomfort in the room. All our clothes and the sheets were cold and clammy from the room environment. The bed was very springy and made getting a decent night's rest almost impossible. The water pressure was so intense it was painful, and the shower curtain did not close, allowing water to soak the bathroom floor. The staff was helpful, however, and allowed us three room changes to try and get away from the smell. They brought towels, etc., when requested, and were generally good. Despite this, the overall impression was worse than any fleabag motel I've ever stayed in. The $10/day internet and $7/day exercise room added insult to injury. I will never stay here again, and will recommend that all my friends avoid it as well.

Expensive Disappointment!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Room was not ready at 5:00 PM. Check in is at 3:00 PM. The elevators are very slow and not enough to handle the traffic this hotel seems to generate. The two elevators that had the outside view were closed most of the week. The rain kept coming in on the guests. I had to take the stairs to the 14th floor. I guess it was good exercise except I thought I was going to have a heart attack by the time I got to my room. Snacks in room are very expensive, and if you want to put something in the refrig, the front desk will charge you up to $25 to remove the items. I will not stay here again. I was here on a business trip. I met up with others in the Marriot Marquis for business meetings across the street and it seemed much nicer. The staff there treated me like I was a special guest, and I was not even a guest in their hotel. I was very disappointed in the overall service that I recieved while a guest at the Hilton Downtown. No one there seemed to be glad or happy that I was there...the staff was not very pleasant to deal with.

Below Hilton standards

Paid $50/night through priceline for a weekend stay - definitely would not pay any more for this hotel. Room was clean, but old, including a worn-out bed and bathroom, 19" TV - same as what you would expect for a Motel 6. Lobby was more up to Hilton standards, and seemed to be always filled with attendees to conferences and wedding receptions. Expect to pay heavily for parking. If you are going anwhere out of the downtown area, you will need to drive. The 'valet' rate is not horrible $16/day for in and out privilages, but of course that was full during my stay. The self park does not have in and out privilages, so my parking tab averaged about $24/day. If you're knowledgeable about the area, you may be able to find a cheaper overnight lot somewhere else downtown.

OK for a Hilton

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here for 5 days for a conference held at the hotel. It was the second time I'd been there and just as mediocre as I'd remembered. The advantages of this hotel is that it's well-equipped to handle a conference or convention, so if you're going there for that, you'll have an ok experience.

The downside is that it's a huge hotel with a lot of space to heat and cool (they can never get the temperatures right in that place) and the hotel is simply starting to show its age. It feels a little like an airport--fake air, no windows, large concrete structures--but truth be told the room itself was fairly ok. It's about what you'd expect, and I do give props for the excellent water pressure. But it still feels institutional and I definitely feel like a business traveler when I stay there.

The upside is that you won't likely experience any MAJOR problems--everything is just kind of ok. I liked the 24-hour coffee stand and the Trader Vic's downstairs is a nice touch (though the whole first floor of the hotel smells like smoked meats every night) but overall you leave with a feeling of "humph--it's ok."

Not Great

First the good. Very comfortable bed. My shower had great water pressure and plenty of hot water. My room was on the 23rd floor and had a very nice city view. Our waitress at the Tiki bar downstairs was friendly and knowledable about the many drinks.

Now the bad. Very unfriendly check-in AND check-out. Many times the elevators were slow and always packed with people. I had to change my room key 3 times because something was wrong with the lock. One day I could not open my door so a security person came to try to unlock it. They eventually had to call a locksmith and I was told that it would be fixed by the time I returned. I still couldn't open my door when I got back. I was VERY frustrated at this point and the supervisory security person came and told me that the locksmith did come and fixed it but in order for me to open the door, I had to insert (or push) my key card very forcefully in order for it to scan the key card correctly. How in the world was I supposed to know that? A large group of us wanted to go to Buckhead and the hotel doorman said that the hotel can provide a shuttle for us. While in the shuttle to Buckhead, the driver said that it would cost each of us $5 for the ride, AND would not be able to come back later to pick us up. I would not recommend this hotel.

Hated it!

I have to stay at this hotel about twice a year for business trips. You would think one of the top 100 companies on forbes list could pick better accomodations. The first trip to the Atlanta Hilton the room was more then disappointing. The room had the television bolted down. I reserved a king size bed and I was given two double beds. When I complained, I was told they were sold out. The walls had no pictures just nails where pictures once hung.

The second time I was mildly excited because I received a wireless laptop and I wanted to use it at the hotel. Before my trip, I called the hotel and asked if they offered wireless internet service. They did. When I arrived there, I could not get a connection at all. My laptop is brand new and has no trouble getting connections anywhere else.

I called the front desk and they said they would send a technician up right away. I informed them I was attending a business meeting and would be back in the room at five pm. The lady at the front desk told me she would send the technician then. Five minutes later there was a knock at my door. I opened it to find a man running by me with no introduction carrying some equipment. After inquiring if he was indeed the technician, I let him know I would need his service at five o clock pm or he could leave the router and I would hook it up myself.

He was very hyper, practically pacing around the room. My eyes could barely keep up with him and he was making me very nervous. He refused to leave the router and ran out the room. I ran down the hall pleading with him to leave the router so I would be able to use my computer after the meeting ended. He ran with the router muttering and telling me to call him at five.

At two pm, I had a break. I called the front desk and spoke to the same lady. I told her very sternly not to send the same technician and asked when the next technicians hours began. She told me six o clock. I politely requested she send the other technician at 6 pm. She said ok.

A minute later, there was a knock on my door and who do you think was out there jumping around and shaking around? Uh huh. The first technician. I told him I told the lady to send the other tech at six pm. He followed me to the lobby and was talking loudly in the lobby.

Before going to my room at five, I went to the front desk explained the situation and a very nice technician came and installed the router. Needless to say, it never worked. I was very disappointed with the accomodations, some of the staff, and the overall experience.

This place is not worth your time or your money

I will look elsewhere before staying at this "full service" hotel again. I was quite disappointed.

My husband graduated this weekend, and was told to stay at the Hilton Atlanta (because the University had booked a block of rooms and was set up to greet the graduates there). There were 5 of us in our party - and we were treated shabbily practically the whole time we were there (3days/2 nights). The hotel was completely booked with several other events while we were there, and it made impossible to get quality service or even an elevator ride to our room on the 18th floor. The Concierge was rude to me the 2 times I called for directions or information, there are not enough elevators for the number of rooms in this hotel, and everytime you turn around they are charging you for something. You can't use a luggage cart yourself - they are guarded by the bell hops, who all have their hands out for tips. They charged us $9.95 for daily internet acces AND another $5 to rent the wireless adapter. Parking was not as easy as others have made it sound, and they charge you every time you want to go somewhere.

I won't ever stay here again - I did not feel that the money we spent at this hotel was worth what we had to put up with.

Top Local Tips for Atlanta

Ga Aquarium and World of Coke These two places are pretty neat, my husband and I visited them while we were in town

Nightmare Traffic Everything you hear about Atlanta traffic is true! It is horrendous. Whatever you do , do not drive into downtown during rush hour. I arrived at my hotel with an crushing headache, after being in traffic at crawling pace for 2 hours .

Travel GPS will be a life saver.
