Historical Traveller Reviews of Bilmar Beach Resort Hotel

Tried out the penthouse and we really liked it

from bamcrewmom
My family and I have stayed at the Bilmar for the past 4 years. We became frustrated with the old rooms. We always used to stay in the beach front efficiency, but decided to splurge this year. The location is just too good to stay anywhere else. Our penthouse was fabulous. Room 840. Lots of room, and a view to die for. We will never stay in an efficiency again. Bad points, had to buy our own dish soap and paper towels.. They are timesharing out these rooms but please, give the penthouse a dishwasher and high speed internet, and an ice maker. Had to leave a day early due to the hurricane, but loved it. Stinky fish on the beach, not their fault though.

Hey managment, check out your pool guy. I left my chair and umbrella by the pool, looked out one minute it was there, and the next it was not.
Went down, asked about it, and low and behold, your pool cleaner guy had it socked away in his maintenance room. Maybe he was holding it for me, NOT!

Don't know if we will travel that far south again but we loved the penthouse. Truly felt like a queen here!

Bilmar Beach Resort gets a thumbs up!

from maddox
We stayed at the Bilmar for three nights at the end of June. We were pleasantly surprised with the room considering the cost was inexpensive. They are currently remodeling every room. Our room was a beachfront efficiency on the seventh floor with a balcony. The new room was beautifully decorated and included a very nice kitchenette equipped with all your needs to cook a meal if you wanted to. Cherry-wood cabinetry, two-burner flat-top stove, microwave, more-than-mini fridge, dishes, pots and pans are all there for your needs. It also had a toaster. So, feel free to pack a cooler or stop at the supermarket before you go. The beach is enormous and not overcrowded at all. Beach chairs and cabanas are available for rent. There are two pools and a very nice beach cafe with decent food and fruity rumrunners. Parking was not scarce. Also, if you've ever been to Sloppy Joe's in Key West, there's one right in the hotel. Treasure Island is a quaint beachy town. The Bilmar was great to suit our needs!

Good Resort Being Updated - Quite Satisfied

from WillieC
We spent two nights at Bilmar early June 2005 and were overall quite satisfied. Our room was a beachfront efficiency, which was quite roomy, with a nice balcony overlooking the beach. We were on the third floor, which was suggested by the front desk upon check in as it would be less noisy and more private than the ones directly on the beach (the first floor), as they had lots of beach foot traffic just outside the sliding doors. That was good advice. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the staff kept it clean. The large refrigerator was nice, and while it had a full kitchen, we did not make use of it other than the microwave and fridge. The room had not been updated and still had that sort of 50s-60s look, but it was just fine.

The location of the Bilmar could not be better as it sits on one of the best stretches of beach in Treasure Island. The whole resort is undergoing an update, so at this time the center block of buildings is closed down and being updated. Based on the looks of the lobby and the convention area of the hotel the updates will be quite nice. It appeared that the high-rise tower of the resort has been updated but we did not visit that area so do not know for sure.

Dining options consist of the Beach Bar, located in the same block as the room we had, and Sloppy Joe’s, a branch of the one in Key West. Beach Bar has very good drinks at a reasonable price (example, Rum Runners on the rocks were $4 and very strong and tasty) and the breakfast buffet, at around $6 was very good as well. Nothing elaborate but good typical eggs, sausage, French toast, juice, coffee, cereal, etc. We had dinner one night at Sloppy Joe’s and we thought it was excellent. Very good service, excellent food, nice drinks, and a very pleasant interior. We would recommend Sloppy Joe’s to anyone. It is not restricted to guests as it opens to the street and we were told it is quite popular with locals as well.

While the Bilmar has two pools we only used the one close to our room. It is decent sized, not large, but nice warm water and very clean. The hot tub is very good as well.
Since the beach is just outside the door, the access to the Gulf waters is quite easy and the beach is very nice and kept very clean. One important thing to note is that one should wear water shoes or sandals on the beach as it has lots of shells and parts of shells (typical of the Gulf beaches) and can be ouchy to bare feet.

Overall we found the Bilmar to be a nice little hotel that met our needs perfectly. It is showing its age, but with the renovations taking place it will again be back to a good level. We would stay here again.

great time, brand new rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
my wife an i stayed at the bilmar hotel and loved it. we had a room on the 6th floor that was just redone. the view was fantastic, the staff was very polite and pleasent. we ate at sloppy joes on the outside deck and it was great. we liked it so much we went back for supper. the new england clam chowder was as good as i have had, and the chicken wings were also as good as we have had. the hotel was extremely clean, and when i found out they are converting this into a hotel condo, we decided to buy a room. this was my first visit to treasure island, but we both loved it. i dont know where you can get a better view of the ocean, the people we met were so friendly, and the food was great. i can see where others that had visited in the older rooms would have a reason to complain, but not anymore.

Pleasantly Surprised II

from klm518
I was a little hesitant about staying here since the reviews were so-so, but my husband and his family had been here before , so we thought we'd try it again, especially since the last review talked about a renovated room. When we opened up out room...... YES!!!!!! It was also a renovated room (nice kitchenette, flat screen, etc.) and had a GREAT view off the balcony. Room wasvery clean, staff was friendly. We are already planning on going back this winter. Not all the renovation is done, I'm sure it will be by the end of the summer. The continuing renovation was being done on the building next to ours, but we didn't really notice. Great inexpensive vacation! I also agree with other review, Sloppy Joes is overrated, but tolerable..... try Salt Rock Grill, it's AWESOME!!

Pleasantly surprised

from nationole
I had read several reviews about the Bilmar being rather "worn" and the rooms being old. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised, as our room had been recently renovated. It had a nice "Tommy Bahama" feel to it, with "granite" countertops and a flat screen TV on the wall. They are working on renovating all the rooms by July. Still not a luxury hotel, but I would move it up to 3 stars, at least.

Great Hotel, Lousy Enteretainment

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just wanted to say, Great Hotel, Lousy Entertainment! I know this may be a picky thing to gripe about, but I'm going to anyway....

The entertainment at this hotel and the adjoining Sloppy Joe's is boring! Come on guys; you can do better!

Just next door at the Thunderbird Tiki Bar check out Hurricane Johnny or Chuck Cobb... either of these guys will entertain you in a great tropical island setting. They are the best! Both of them have been there over 5 years we've been going and they just get better year by year.

Dockside Daves was the Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from cloudninety
I loved the Bilmar! Beach was wonderful and the staff was very accomodating. Our room was located right behind a ice machine and it was nightmare to sleep through. I talked to the front desk the next morning and they immediately moved us to a better room. The rooms are not fancy but nice and clean. Some people have complained about bugs in their reviews but I stayed seven ninghts and never saw the first one in two different rooms. ( maybe they brought the bugs with them!) If you want a real treat for dining be sure to visit Dockside Dave's for sure. The grouper sandwich was OH MY GOD HUGE!! The onion rings were enormous also and very tasty. Dollar for dollar it was the best value we found, in fact we went several times. The open faced roast beef sandwich was also great. The Bilmar was a great choice for lodging and I will stay there again. It is also in a great location, sort of a miway point between St. Pete and Clearwater. Some guy complained that the stairwell smelled of urine. He stayed in June and we stayed in August and I never smelled any such thing. If I could pick one thing to complain about it would be the parking. There were times when we couldn't park in the hotel lot and had to park over at Walgreens which was reserved for the Bilmar but seems a little unusual for someone who is paying for a room at the hotel. Sloppy Joes was surely overrated, not near worth the money. Dockside Daves is much better and reasonable as well as Caddy's on the Beach. Overall a great experience and will return.

Good value for money

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed for a week in early March. We got a good rate ($133 via ---) and had a 3rd floor studio overlooking the beach. The room was fine although a little worn but in terms of value-for-money I have no real complaints. Check in staff were very efficient and courteous. The pool area was starting to be taken over by spring-breakers but what do you expect in March on the Gulf Coast? Even then there was no apparent rowdiness. The Bar was good and the bar at the hotel next door had live music on the beach that we could listen to in comfort on our balcony. Good view of sunsets. Our only complaint was we couldn't get an instant table at Smokey Joe's restaurant so we went to the local Mexican restaurant the other side of the road. Gave me Montezuma's the next day followed by a 8 hour flight back to Europe.
There are plenty of shells to be picked on the beach.
They are totally refurbishing one of the apartment blocks at this hotel and converting to a "condo-hotel". So it's possible anyone staying from Summer 2005 onwards in one of the new rooms could be in for a treat.

Terrible Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
I wrote a detailed letter to Barry Bartley, the GM, about the terrible service we received while staying at the Bilmar and recieved no response. My intention was not to post a bad review here without giving them a chance to defened themselves, but I never heard back from Mr. Bartley so I'm going to tell you about my stay there by posting the letter I sent him.

Dear Mr. Bartley,
I recently spent a weekend at the Bilmar Beach Resort and had several problems that I felt needed to be brought to your attention. The reservation was for Friday and Saturday. I reserved the penthouse suite, 843/844, for the night before my wedding and my mother reserved the same rooms for my wedding night as a gift.
We went together to the hotel to check in for both nights so that it would be clear we were the same party and that the total reservation was for two nights. At the front desk, the receptionist told my mother that she could not pay for Saturday night on Friday; that she would in fact, have to come back Saturday morning and pay then (the morning of my wedding). After we checked in, we went up to see the room and opened the connecting doors. During the evening, one of my bridesmaids (who was staying with me Friday night), took one key and went up to the room. One of your staff apparently went up to the room while we were out and closed and locked the connecting doors, leaving my guest stuck in the small bedroom portion until I arrived several hours later. I'm not sure why anyone should have been in our room since we didn't call for anything...
The next morning I called the desk to ask that the room be cleaned. The receptionist informed me that I was checking out and when I reminded her that my mother was paying for Saturday she said “Oh yes, right”. I was afraid to leave my belongings in the room at that point because no one seemed to understand that we were one group. That morning we also could not get hot water for about an hour, apparently due to the construction occurring in the building.
It was obviously a busy morning and when my mother called the desk to see if she could authorize the room to her credit card over the phone she was told “no” by the same receptionist. When my mother went to the desk in person, all that was required was an imprint of her card. She received nothing to sign, no receipt, and no keys to the room; seems like she could have done that on Friday pretty easily.
After the wedding, my husband and I returned to the hotel at about midnight. We used our key in the elevator, but it wouldn’t take us to the penthouse. I called the office and someone was sent over to take us up and let us into our room. I have to say I was not happy at all to be stuck on the dirty, under construction, 7th floor landing in my wedding dress and my husband in his tuxedo. As we were waiting I began to wonder if there was a problem with our keys due to the total confusion we experienced with the check in process. I again called the office, explained the situation, and was told “Yep, that’s probably what happened, they only programmed the keys for one night”. Upon being let into our room, my husband asked if the desk could send keys that worked in case we wanted to go out again. He was told we could come to the desk and get them; not quite what I expected for almost $300 a night, especially when the mistake was not ours.
The following week, I checked my credit card purchases and discovered that I was charged $105 for Saturday night (the night my mother was paying for). I was advised to contact Amy Burns who told me she didn’t understand how that happened. Then again, it doesn't suprise me that the two receptionists had again messed something up. Amy kindly and quickly corrected the error. Dealing with Amy was the only bright spot of my stay, and I only had to talk with her because I was overcharged!
I appreciate you lending me an ear to vent my problems and hope that you take them seriously. This is the worst case of poor customer service that I have ever experienced at a hotel; if it would have just been one of these problems I would have overlooked it. I am not usually a person who writes complaint letters because I know that most service personnel want to do a good job; I work in the service industry as well and I like to know when a customer has a valid complaint so that I can take action. I will say that although I have specifically mentioned the two receptionists (names deleted), they were very kind to us even though they did not provide the level of service I expected. Needless to say, I will not be staying with you again, and will likely advise friends and family to avoid your hotel as well. What you do with this information is completely at your discretion. I just didn’t feel that I could let it go since it was a very important event in my life and it caused quite a bit of unneeded stress during an already busy weekend. I have included my address and phone number in case you have any additional questions.
