Give it a Chance!

from mastertraveler73
We were booked into the Wyndham Harbour Island for a conference. Upon reading the reviews, I must say I was petrified! But if you are willing to take a chance on this location, you may be pleasantly surprised.

The valet parking set up is a little awkward and pricey ($14 per day). But the Bell Services Staff were gracious and able to get us through the process very quickly.

The check-in was painless and we were quickly shown to our room on the 11th floor. The room was a little worn, but certainly not in any great state of disrepair as seen in other reviews. The carpet was clean, linens clean, etc. The grout in the shower was a little darker, but this happens as grout ages. There was a hairline crack in the marble counter, but again nothing that would greatly impact our stay.

We went down to the Legends Bar and Bistro the first evening and discovered that they have no beers on draft and no Amaretto. Other than this initial "hiccup" and a lengthy wait for nachos and chili, the servers were extremely pleasant.

The second night we went to a dinner at Luna di Mar. The food was nicely presented, the typical hotel "mark-up" pricing. This is not the place to go for a "quick" bite. But if you are planning on a nice, leisurely evening with someone you care about, or your co-workers, this is a very nice spot!

The pool is small and a little difficult to get to, but features nice views of the Harbour. The excercise room features a few nice stations. Again, this is a locale more for business than leisure travelers.

All in all, a nice stay. Nothing too out of sorts. Give the place a chance, don't expect the Ritz-Carlton and you won't be disappointed!

s o.k

we only stayed a night..the hotel is a business hotel..so it's not at all like a resort (no big pools etc) but not being fussy it was o.k, if you are picky theres a lot of small problems..but for me nothing major..front desk was friendly, valet was good, if you are doing business at the convention center or going to st petes time forum..it's very convenient, walking distance even for a non walker like me.

We took the trolley to ybor city several miles away had fun, lot's to do even a big gaming place my kids truely enjoyed.

Had dinner at channel side at a beautiful thai rest..called thai thani was very very good. down town tampa is a fun area could have stayed a few more nights..the marriott waterside across the road looked way nicer but more expensive..if you can get a rate under $120 for wyndham then it's worth it any more cough up the difference and stay at waterside marriott.

Overall, this hotel is old and smelly and should be avoided if possible!
While the desk staff was very friendly and reacted to requests for assitance in a timely manner, it was difficult to communicate with room service and the house keeping staff because they either did not speak any English or they were unable to understand the questions asked of them.
The room and entire hotel had an ever present musty smell. We had to burn candles in the room in order to override the smell so that we could sleep. Also, we were on the top floor and could hear the compressors for the air conditioning run 24 hours a day.
The set up of the room is also odd. You must lay in bed to watch TV because you cannot pull it out of the cabinet and turn it because it is too heavy to move. The coffee pot is on a small table in the entry and one must make a mess on the table to make and serve the coffee.
As for the bathroom, it is poorly organized and the hotel is very tight with the towels and wash clothes. In order to get more than one per guest, you have to ask every day -- which is difficult due to the lack of English speaking capability of the house keeping staff previously mentioned.
If you decide to watch a movie on the pay-per-view system, be warned that the movies will stop before they are done. We watched two movies and both stopped before the movie was over. One was 2.5 hours long, and we still don't know how it ended. We were refunded the cost of this movie because I complained--I made the mistake of not complaining about the 1st until it was too late.
Room service is way overpriced. My wife ordered a chicken salad and a desert and ended up paying $25. Hardly worth the money--she should have walked down the street a block and had an excellent meal for that price.
We also had ants and cockroachs in the room. If we dropped a potato chip on the floor and did not get it immediately, the ants would come running in less than a minute! The cockroachs lived under the bed and were hugh--at least an inch long--and we asked the hotel to spray twice. We were never sure they did--the insects kept coming back.
You may wonder: why didn't we leave? The reason was that this was a business trip and we were required to stay at the hotel for one week for training. Otherwise, we would have left after the first night.

Surprisingly Good Stay

Stayed June 18, 2005 for one night with my boyfriend.
I was a little bit nervous after reading the reviews and normally stay at the Waterside Marriott when visiting Tampa which was already booked. All in all a great deal for the money. I contacted the manager and expressed concern over some of the negative tripadvisor reviews. She advsied that they had replaced the carpet a few months ago and that she had never heard of bug problems. When we got there, the hotel, although a little older, did not look worn out. Our room ($89 AAA rate +$10 self parking fee) was very clean and carpet looked and smelled brand new. The bathroom was clean, except for what felt like a little bit of soap scum on the shower floor. The toiletries are Golden Door and the hotel accomodated our late check out request. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel is much quieter than the Marriott, but the fitness room and on-site dining options are not too impressive. No big deal, however, as there are plenty of dining and entertainment options within walking distance. You can walk to Channelside and if you like great house music, the Hyde Park Cafe (we went for the Mark Farina show) on Platt Street is only a $6 cab ride. This is a bargain compared to the Marriott (which I still love) and I would stay there again.

Total state of disrepair!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Wyndham Harbour Island 6 years ago for a wedding and remember it being a very nice hotel in a good location. I recently returned for a weekend and was in shock at the state of disrepair. Without exception, furniture was stained and work looking. The brass surrounding the elevator entrances was chipped and worn looking. The wood inside the elevators was chipped scuffed and marred. We checked into our room and there were red stains on the carpet, peeling wallpaper, horribly scuffed walls and stains on the one arm chair in the room. We called down to the front desk who agreed to move us to another room. This room also had peeling wall paper and smelled musty and damp. I also noticed a dark stain on the white blanket under the comforter on one bed. YUK! I will NEVER stay in this hotel again! I can not believe a company like Wyndham would let maintenance get this out of hand!

Group Sales Staff Great, Hotel is not

from Belasaria
First, the group sales staff was fantastic to work with. Not only did our company have its sales meeting but we were also attending our biggest trade show of the year, and the group sales staff was fantastic in continual communication with us and keeping up with our changes. I had to pick up the process mid-way because of personnel changes in our office, but the Wynham group sales staff helped out tremendously.

But... the hotel itself was a disappointment. The front desk staff was not especially helpful. Guests that I left welcome packets for were not alerted that they had messages at the front desk even when they checked in. When I asked one of them to make copies because the business services had been closed, she wasn't that courteous.

The meeting rooms were stuffy and poorly ventilated. The doors to one of the meeting rooms didn't shut properly and the signage was difficult to follow. The catering services were okay, but nothing spectacular. The staff was slow to clear from the meals on all three days.

The suite that was part of our block was disappointing, especially for the cost of it. The furniture was older, carpeting outdated, and the room smelled musty. I was embarrassed because we had several important meetings in that suite and it was lackluster.

Again, great group sales staff. Very poor hotel

What a ripoff!

I had to go to a conference in Tampa in March, and since I didn't book early, I ended up rooming here with a colleague. Becuase this was a HUGE conference, all the hotel prices were inflated but the Wyndham was $240 a night. Alright, I'm thinking, but at least it's a Wyndham. I was wrong. I have seen Holiday Inn's with nicer lobbies. The staff was friendly. There is no weight room - well there is, but it's in a room smaller than the size of a hotel room. I think I counted 3 treadmills and one was broken. The beds were full sized, not queens. The shower did have mildew in it, and it did not get cleaned. The bright side was our view- it was really nice - of the riverwalk and downtown. The key lime pie in the restaurant downstairs was really good. Overall not worth more than $80 a night if you have to stay there. But I had a friend staying at the Hyatt downtown, and her room was cheaper, had bigger beds, and a much livelier lounge and bar.

A dump

from A TripAdvisor Member
This place ---! I'm sitting in this dingy room with a headache from the gnarly mildew smell. This is my second room because the first one had a loud buzzing noise coming from the ceiling and the grout in the bathroom looked like a shower in a Turkish prison. Although the buzz was not very annoying when you're awake, it became unbearable when I was trying to sleep. The staff particularly Kandala were very nice, but the property needs a thorough douche!

poor service with attitude

from cameshon
I went to the Wyndham Harbour Hotel in Fl for the AKC Invitational.
The parking attendants were not helpful, often refusing to put my car on a list for the morning even after a five dollar tip. No one opened a door at any time for me even though I was carrying lots of equipment and had a dog on a leash. When I walked the dog in the middle of the night no one was on duty at the door and there were teens chasing cars outside the hotel. The night before there was a security problem at about 11pm. The bill was incorrect for both myself and a friend. When she was accidently locked out of her room at night no one was available to help and they wouldn't give me a key for security reasons as I did not have her ID (it was locked in her room). She had to wait in my room for quite a while. Even though many competitors were staying there no coffee could be purchased in time to leave for the convention center. I had a DO NOT DISTURB sign on my door, and the maid service entered anyway. I had just stayed with my dogs at the W in Union Square NY and found everything perfect.

No Added Value...

from A TripAdvisor Member
Wife and I stayed at the Wyndham this past weekend. Disappointed in the quality of rooms and service. Location of hotel is fantastic. However, with the Marriott across the channel, I cannot recommend this hotel. The Marriott offered many more services and quality that was far beyond that of the Wyndham. Again...our summary of the Wyndham is... an "ok" play to stay...but no added value to make it worth your effort.

Top Local Tips for Tampa

Check out Ybor City at night! Ybor City is a section of town with great restaurants and nightlife. We visited during the Knight Parade (Feb.) and enjoyed a Mardi Gras type atmosphere. The trolley is convenient to get you there if you're staying downtown.

Driving and the GPS system The greater Tampa/St. Pete area is an amazing maze of roads, highways, legal U turns so be prepared for a challenge. Further, the GPS systems have a difficult time working well or dependably which adds to the chaotic driving exploration. I am from a major metro area so am no stranger to traffic, local nuances and so forth. Do not expect to have a leisurely drive to or from anything.
