Give it a Chance!
from mastertraveler73The valet parking set up is a little awkward and pricey ($14 per day). But the Bell Services Staff were gracious and able to get us through the process very quickly.
The check-in was painless and we were quickly shown to our room on the 11th floor. The room was a little worn, but certainly not in any great state of disrepair as seen in other reviews. The carpet was clean, linens clean, etc. The grout in the shower was a little darker, but this happens as grout ages. There was a hairline crack in the marble counter, but again nothing that would greatly impact our stay.
We went down to the Legends Bar and Bistro the first evening and discovered that they have no beers on draft and no Amaretto. Other than this initial "hiccup" and a lengthy wait for nachos and chili, the servers were extremely pleasant.
The second night we went to a dinner at Luna di Mar. The food was nicely presented, the typical hotel "mark-up" pricing. This is not the place to go for a "quick" bite. But if you are planning on a nice, leisurely evening with someone you care about, or your co-workers, this is a very nice spot!
The pool is small and a little difficult to get to, but features nice views of the Harbour. The excercise room features a few nice stations. Again, this is a locale more for business than leisure travelers.
All in all, a nice stay. Nothing too out of sorts. Give the place a chance, don't expect the Ritz-Carlton and you won't be disappointed!

from lizzaWe took the trolley to ybor city several miles away had fun, lot's to do even a big gaming place my kids truely enjoyed.
Had dinner at channel side at a beautiful thai rest..called thai thani was very very good. down town tampa is a fun area could have stayed a few more nights..the marriott waterside across the road looked way nicer but more expensive..if you can get a rate under $120 for wyndham then it's worth it any more cough up the difference and stay at waterside marriott.
t Wait to Leave!
from A TripAdvisor MemberWhile the desk staff was very friendly and reacted to requests for assitance in a timely manner, it was difficult to communicate with room service and the house keeping staff because they either did not speak any English or they were unable to understand the questions asked of them.
The room and entire hotel had an ever present musty smell. We had to burn candles in the room in order to override the smell so that we could sleep. Also, we were on the top floor and could hear the compressors for the air conditioning run 24 hours a day.
The set up of the room is also odd. You must lay in bed to watch TV because you cannot pull it out of the cabinet and turn it because it is too heavy to move. The coffee pot is on a small table in the entry and one must make a mess on the table to make and serve the coffee.
As for the bathroom, it is poorly organized and the hotel is very tight with the towels and wash clothes. In order to get more than one per guest, you have to ask every day -- which is difficult due to the lack of English speaking capability of the house keeping staff previously mentioned.
If you decide to watch a movie on the pay-per-view system, be warned that the movies will stop before they are done. We watched two movies and both stopped before the movie was over. One was 2.5 hours long, and we still don't know how it ended. We were refunded the cost of this movie because I complained--I made the mistake of not complaining about the 1st until it was too late.
Room service is way overpriced. My wife ordered a chicken salad and a desert and ended up paying $25. Hardly worth the money--she should have walked down the street a block and had an excellent meal for that price.
We also had ants and cockroachs in the room. If we dropped a potato chip on the floor and did not get it immediately, the ants would come running in less than a minute! The cockroachs lived under the bed and were hugh--at least an inch long--and we asked the hotel to spray twice. We were never sure they did--the insects kept coming back.
You may wonder: why didn't we leave? The reason was that this was a business trip and we were required to stay at the hotel for one week for training. Otherwise, we would have left after the first night.
Surprisingly Good Stay
from A TripAdvisor MemberI was a little bit nervous after reading the reviews and normally stay at the Waterside Marriott when visiting Tampa which was already booked. All in all a great deal for the money. I contacted the manager and expressed concern over some of the negative tripadvisor reviews. She advsied that they had replaced the carpet a few months ago and that she had never heard of bug problems. When we got there, the hotel, although a little older, did not look worn out. Our room ($89 AAA rate +$10 self parking fee) was very clean and carpet looked and smelled brand new. The bathroom was clean, except for what felt like a little bit of soap scum on the shower floor. The toiletries are Golden Door and the hotel accomodated our late check out request. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel is much quieter than the Marriott, but the fitness room and on-site dining options are not too impressive. No big deal, however, as there are plenty of dining and entertainment options within walking distance. You can walk to Channelside and if you like great house music, the Hyde Park Cafe (we went for the Mark Farina show) on Platt Street is only a $6 cab ride. This is a bargain compared to the Marriott (which I still love) and I would stay there again.

Total state of disrepair!
from A TripAdvisor MemberGroup Sales Staff Great, Hotel is not
from BelasariaBut... the hotel itself was a disappointment. The front desk staff was not especially helpful. Guests that I left welcome packets for were not alerted that they had messages at the front desk even when they checked in. When I asked one of them to make copies because the business services had been closed, she wasn't that courteous.
The meeting rooms were stuffy and poorly ventilated. The doors to one of the meeting rooms didn't shut properly and the signage was difficult to follow. The catering services were okay, but nothing spectacular. The staff was slow to clear from the meals on all three days.
The suite that was part of our block was disappointing, especially for the cost of it. The furniture was older, carpeting outdated, and the room smelled musty. I was embarrassed because we had several important meetings in that suite and it was lackluster.
Again, great group sales staff. Very poor hotel
What a ripoff!

from cameshonThe parking attendants were not helpful, often refusing to put my car on a list for the morning even after a five dollar tip. No one opened a door at any time for me even though I was carrying lots of equipment and had a dog on a leash. When I walked the dog in the middle of the night no one was on duty at the door and there were teens chasing cars outside the hotel. The night before there was a security problem at about 11pm. The bill was incorrect for both myself and a friend. When she was accidently locked out of her room at night no one was available to help and they wouldn't give me a key for security reasons as I did not have her ID (it was locked in her room). She had to wait in my room for quite a while. Even though many competitors were staying there no coffee could be purchased in time to leave for the convention center. I had a DO NOT DISTURB sign on my door, and the maid service entered anyway. I had just stayed with my dogs at the W in Union Square NY and found everything perfect.

from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Tampa
Check out Ybor City at night! Ybor City is a section of town with great restaurants and nightlife. We visited during the Knight Parade (Feb.) and enjoyed a Mardi Gras type atmosphere. The trolley is convenient to get you there if you're staying downtown.
Driving and the GPS system The greater Tampa/St. Pete area is an amazing maze of roads, highways, legal U turns so be prepared for a challenge. Further, the GPS systems have a difficult time working well or dependably which adds to the chaotic driving exploration. I am from a major metro area so am no stranger to traffic, local nuances and so forth. Do not expect to have a leisurely drive to or from anything.
