Historical Traveller Reviews of Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina

from kurock_chalk
This Marriott was a standard Marriott and frankly, looked a bit upscale in the lobby. However, everything else except for the concierge lounge, was just standard hotel fare. The bed was not comfortable, actually the sheets were a bit like sandpaper. The towels were not soft or fluffy either. I had a nice corner room with a balcony and view, except the corner of my balcony opened up to the balcony of the room next door, and as a female traveller, I am always concerned about my safety. With this type of set-up, I was not comfortable opening my balcony door to enjoy the nice warm weather. I could hear every word and movement of the neighboring guest. The area of the hotel was OK but a bit industrial however the trolley across the street allowed inexpensive ($3) and safe transportation to some fun shopping and eatery areas. Internet access in the business center was incredibly expensive. I think it was $20 an hour, or frankly more because it cost me $10 and change to sign on, bring up the southwest website, print my boarding pass and log off. I had to visit the center twice during my visit. I should have found a Kinkos. The hotel does have a nice gift shop with a well stocked necessities shelf and the concierge lounge and concierge in the lounge was very nice. Would I stay at Waterside again? Maybe, maybe not. Oh, the valet parking was only $14 which is a good price.

Beautiful Hotel, Restaurant Staff mean, Someone tried to break into our room!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights this month. Upon entering the hotel, we were blown away. It is one of the most beautiful hotels we have ever stayed in. The lobby was amazing and so classy looking. Our check-in was the most efficient we have ever had. In less than 1 minute we were headed to our room, no kidding. We were on the 10th floor and were even upgraded to a canal view. Very nice. The bathroom was also great. HUGE. One of the biggest hotel bathrooms I've ever seen. We also had plenty of towels for the 2 of us, which seems to be a luxury, because most hotels only provide 2 towels. We were given 4, plus tons of hand towels and wash clothes. The Neutrogena toiletries were nice as was the sewing kit, cotton balls and cotton swabs provided. I was a bit disappointed in the beds as they are nowhere close to the comfort of the ones at the Marriott Tampa Airport. These were "regular" hotel-type mattresses. Not bad, but not good either. The ones at the Marriott Tampa Airport were more comfortable than my mattress at home! I was impressed that the cleaning staff followed the "Do not disturb" sign and didn't interrupt our sleep early in the a.m. But, if you forget to put it on your door, they did knock on one door near us before 8 a.m. As others have stated, the trolley is right outside and very convenient to take a ride to Ybor City. I was very surprised with Ybor city as I had the impression it was scary place to be at night. Well, 3 blocks in any direction is, but not the downtown section where the shops and restaurants are. It was acutually rather nice. Now for the negative parts to our stay.
The hotel pool and hot tub closes promptly at 11 p.m. This being said, a hotel employee is standing there at the strike of 11 to run you out of the hot tub. This I could live with. But, I couldn't live with how awful the restaurant staff treated the elderly guests staying there. One man, I wish I had gotten his name so I could post it here, treated them like total crap, being condesending and downright rude. These elderly people are here because they were displaced from their condos from the hurricanes and have been here ever since. We figure that they had no choice but to stay here, as this is probably where the management of their condos set them up. So, they were there every morning for breakfast. Being on fixed incomes and having your home destroyed is bad enough, much less being treated second class by a hotel staff. We couldn't figure out why all the staff seemed to be treating them like total crap and then kissing butt big time to the business people. Then it hit us, the elderly people are probably not leaving big fat tips that they can expense to their company like the business people are. Shame on you Marriott Restaurant Staff for treating these people like this. What if it was your mother or father who was having to stay here because of a natural disaster? Just because you may not be getting as nice a tip doesn't mean you should treat them this way. Also, the valet seemed to act differently toward the business crowd or those just there for vacation. That said, we were there on business. So, when my husband came down in his suit, they fell all over themselves trying to help him. Later that night, when we were in our jeans and sweatshirts, we literally had to run them down to get any help. And, yes, we did tip them, both when we were dressed up and dressed down. The final straw was when someone tried to break into our room while I was sleeping. Not once, but twice!!! My husband had already left for the morning and I was scared to death when someone started jerking on the connecting door from the room next to us. Thank goodness I had locked the deadbolt on my side. I lightly knocked on the door to let the people next door know that someone was in the room, thinking o.k., maybe I'm just hearing things. So, I lay back down. 30 minutes later, it happens again, this time I call security. So, security shows up and I can hear them talking (I listened thru the door and could hear every word). Instead of repremanding the folks for trying to break into my room, they sugar coat it and said that I had called the front desk because I thought that maybe children had been left alone in the room. Bull crap. I called because I was scared to death that I was gonna get mugged or worse by some freak next door. So, they guy blames it on his little kid, who was in the room with them and said that his son was "confused cause he didn't know where the bedroom was". Give me a break. Then he says, "I tried it too, cause I wanted to know where the door led." Now, these people didn't just try the handle once and realize it was locked. They jerked on it repeatedly, trying to force it open on two seperate occasions even after seeing it was locked. Plus, you have to be pretty darn stupid not know what a connecting door is in a hotel. So, basically, they were lying to security. Who knows what they would have done to me had they gotten in?! Then what does the security guy do, says, "no problem, it isn't a big deal" to the guy who tried to break in my room!!! I was so furious!! Needless to say these guests, who were, what's the term I'm looking for..."ghetto fabulous" gave us trouble the rest of our stay. It is always our luck to get put by people like this when we go to hotels. They were loud and obnoxious all day and night and kept walking by our room door and saying stuff so we could hear it--you know being a --------. Once I threw a water bottle in the trash can and since the can was metal it made a sound and the woman from next door says extremely loudly, "WHAT IN THE WORLD IS MAKING ALL THAT NOISE?!" And, looking out the peep hole, she indeed was standing right outside my door trying to start something with me, I guess. But, since security let them by with it the first time, I didn't see any reason to call and say we were being harassed again. So, lessons learned by our stay: Lock your doors, don't accept a connecting room or you risk your safety, don't depend on security to handle a safety situation, dress like a million bucks at all times, and most importantly don't be a senior citizen. Otherwise, you'll have a bad time at this place.

Lovely, for a corporate chain hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
If you're happy to stay in a chain hotel, this one is lovely. Ask for a room with a balcony overlooking the marina. Rooms are clean and very comfortable. Breakfast is expensive but the buffet is amazing. We were the youngest guests in the hotel by about fifty years - and we're in our 30s - but for a business stay that doesn't really matter. I'd stay there again on business without hesitation.

Second stay at this hotel

from cacmlc
We stayed here for the second time as a weekend getaway during Tampa's Guavaween. Having the trolley right outside the hotel makes it very convenient to go to Ybor City or the Channelside shops and restaurants. The hotel is beautiful, but the pool area is noisy. The hotel spa sells memberships to locals and they seemed to be in the majority in the pool area, but it's probably better during the week. The rooms are clean and nicely furnished. We asked for a balcony and had a nice city view. The hotel restaurant is nice for breakfast, but not inexpensive.

Great Hotel and Service

from Rogers2
Stayed at the Marriott Tampa Waterside Hotel and
Marina on Sept 17th. We were leaving on a cruise
the next day and wanted to stay close to the Port of
Tampa. This hotel was a 10 minute walk or 5 min
trolly ride to Channelside/Port of Tampa. This hotel
is beautiful and spacious. Rooms are large, clean,
with comfortable beds and roomy bathrooms. The
staff are helpful, friendly, and ready to you serve you
in any way. I recommend this hotel especially for
cruise passengers. It is a great way to relax before
starting your cruise. There are many restaurants
within the hotel and within a 3-10 minute walk. You
will not be disappointed.

Very nice

from ScoobyVA
We stayed here 8/16-8/21 and had a great stay. The room we had overlooked Channelside shopping area and the water so we had a nice view. It was clean and comfortable for 3 of us.

It was a bit noisy the first 2 days we were there, but there was a conference going on so there were many people drifiting around. They also had many displaced senior citizens staying with them due to the hurricane further south the week before.

Everyone was friendly and helpful. This is definitely a hotel we'd stay in again when visiting Tampa.

Typical Marriott

from hotelhound
Stayed on night 8/25 on the concierge level with a city view. Typical Marriott room which would have been cramped with more than 1 person. Bathroom was also uneventful. Pool area is large but not particularly relaxing. Staff was very friendly. Concierge lounge is very large and well staffed. Not too much directly surrounding the hotel -- closest restaurants seemed to be at Channelside which is an easy walk or trolley ride although torrential rains kept me at the hotel for dinner. If location works for you this is a nice place to stay.

Great Hotel for cruising passengers

from socalalan
We stayed at this hotel for a few days before our cruise, it was great, good location, only 1/2 mile from the cruise docks, they even offer a free shuttle. Ask for the cruise ship special, you need to call the hotel directly it was only $ 99 per night and included breakfast, wow what a a deal. There is not much around the hotel as far a sightseeing , but there is an old fashioned troley that runs right in front of the hotel, you can get a whole day pass for a few dollars, it takes you to lots of great areas around Tampa for some great food and nightlife. So if you are cruising or want to be near the conventions center this is the place for you.

Nice Hotel/Great Staff

from cm1661
The Tampa Marriott Waterside was a nice hotel, I stayed there for 4 nights in July and was very impressed. The staff was just great, noting what they had to handle, during my stay there were about 200 gymnasts staying at the hotel for a competition at the convention center coupled with the visit of President Bush to a convention at the hotel. The staff was very helpful and calm during this, I would stay there again when in Tampa.

Top Local Tips for Tampa

Think again Do not be fooled by the pretty pastel-colored building. It is a trash hole inside and it lets the name "Marriott" down in a bad way.

Confusing The roads are a little confusing driving around Tampa. We had a rental car and we had problems find our hotel a few times. Otherwise the town is very clean and beautiful.

Don't Miss Columbia! The Columbia Restuarant in Ybor City is worth the trip! Great spanish food in a superb atmosphere, including live traditional dancing.
