Our accommodations were very comfortable; the service was friendly and professional; and even though, my husband and I went by ourselves and had the privacy and romance we wanted, we saw that Trade winds Island Grand in St. Pete Beach Florida, would be a perfect place for a family trip; there were many activities appropriate for all ages. We definitely would like to go back and bring our children next time.

Absolutely loved the Island Grand!

We had a great time at this resort with our 4 yr old twin boys and 17 mo. old daughter. We had a 2 bdrm. suite and it was plenty big enough for all of us! It was clean and very nice. The staff was wonderful.
They provided us with a crib, highchair and put up a balcony net for the toddlers safety. The pools were clean and very nice and the beach was beautiful! Lots of stuff for kids to do. All the restaurants were good too! Pizza Hut and the ice cream shop were the kids favorites.
Good breakfast buffet at Bermuda's. Great pina coladas!! They have paddleboats through a beautifully landscaped canal, a great kids program, miniature golf and a pirate show. The gift shops were very nice. We got the resort babysitter for a night, can't remember her name, she was the owner of the babysitting company, she was wonderful.
I was hesitant about getting a stranger but after researching and meeting her I was very comfortable. We are going back next year! I recommend this resort to anyone with kids! We also went on a pirate ship cruise on Madeira Beach at Johns Pass, just 10 minutes north, it was really fun for the kids and we saw dolphins!

This is a great resort for families with small children. Ours (age 4 and 6) absolutely loved the kids club. There is alot packed into the grounds here, and the beach is terrific. Staff was very friendly and attentive. The only drawbacks are 1) literature doesn't reflect the fact that the Sirata is no longer affiliated, and 2) Some rooms overlooking the pool area are probably noisy.

Great value

Had a quick weekend getaway and thought the place was nice. Our room was clean and they provided us with a crib and highchair for our little one. The hotel was very busy with lots of kids but it was never super noisy on our floor. The weather was sunny and warm and I do recommend it to someone on a budget who wants a resort atmosphere.

Really enjoyed the Island Grand. There was a lot for the kids to do. Knew the room would be small based on reading reviews & it was. We had a one bedroom suite. We had some trouble with our shower & hot water. They never got it fixed quite right, but I certainly thought they really put the effort into it! The staff was very friendly & helpful. There was a lot for the whole family, ranging from my teen to my preschooler. Nobody wanted to leave even tho we we're headed for Disney!

Fantastic Christmas Vacation

My family and I (6 people) just stayed at the Tradewinds Island Grand over Christmas Holiday 2003 and had a fantastic vacation. They have everything you need and then some. The had a Christmas Buffet that was outstanding. The employees were all very polite and friendly. We will definately be staying here again. So much to do for the kids. They were busy all day long we had to make appointments with them to see them.
Never a dull moment. Never a bad situation. I would definately suggest this to anyone traveling with children. They will never have time to be bored. Thanks for a great holiday. See you next year.

Not a grand resort!

I had read the reviews of the Island Grand before we booked it, so I was prepared for some of their pitfalls. I am used to super-luxury travel, but the Don CeSar was sold out. I was taking two kids to visit a third in school in St. Pete for the weekend, so we wanted to be on the beach. We booked a two bedroom suite. I was prepared for the entrance through the bedroom, so that didn't bother me. What DID bother me was the dirty, sticky floors and the total lack of amenities i.e.
conditioner in the rooms. And nothing seemed to be working. Our air-conditioning was broken, the plumbing wasn't functional -- engineering spent more time fixing things than anywhere else. On the positive side, there were many restaurants, so we never got bored. But the hotel did not carry any staples (like the conditioner I needed!).
Would not stay there again.

The Grand is not....

Our whole experience was terrible. We were told check in was at 4:00 PM, but that efforts would be made to provide us with early check in, as we were traveling with an infant. When we arrived at the hotel, I pre-registered, and was told that our room would be available shortly.
I asked if there was a facility that we could use to change into our pool clothes, and was told that there were none available. Shocked, I asked if there was even a restroom that we could use. Again, I was told that we could not use the hotel restrooms for changing, as technically, we were not yet guests. Frustrated, I went to one of the pools, schlepping a small suitcase, diaper bag, and an 18 month old child. I found an accommodating employee, who allowed us to change in the Conch Club kiddie rest room. What a treat! Then, I went in search of a towel, so that when our room did become available, I could dry off before re-entering the hotel. I was told that I could not have a towel. FOR $250 I paid for one night, they couldn't give me a %&*$#@* towel? At exactly 4 PM, I received a call that our room was ready. I asked if I needed to stand (again) in the sizeable line that had amassed out the front door, and was told that yes, I needed to stand in line. Great.
After standing in said line for one and one half hours, I finally got my room key. DO NOT EVER STAY IN THIS HOTEL! It is simply not worth it.

Tradewinds Island Grand is G R E A T!

We just returned from Tradewinds Island Grand and thought it was GREAT! There was way more to do at the resort than you would have thought from the website. For example, there is a 180 ft. inflatable waterslide right on the beach, and a boat called Coconut Island (docked offshore) that has an aqua rocker, rafts, a water trampoline, and a twisty tunnel slide that goes straight into the ocean. If you rent a waverunner, you get free use of the boat and its facilities for the day; otherwise you can pay $20 per person just to use the boat.

The beach has a bin full of beach toys such as boogie boards, rafts, pails, shovels, and sand castle molds, so you don't have to worry about packing bulky beach stuff.

Another plus for families: there is a take-out Pizza Hut at the resort, and the casual seafood restaurants allow kids to bring in their pizza while their parents have a grown-up dinner.

When you check in, you are given a schedule of activities, which range from poolside contests and games; nightime movies by the pool; and a wide assortments of crafts. Most are free; some have a charge.

The rooms are very clean and spacious, and the staff was very helpful.

The hotel is in walking distance of a number of restaurants, including a revolving rooftop restaurant at the nearby Holiday Inn, which has a spectacular view of both the ocean and harbor. It is also across the street from a very fun mini-golf course (Ruins de El Dorado). Gigi's Italian restaurant is a few blocks away and has really excellent food.

It's a lovely resort. It's aged in some ways, but the room I had was up to date even if it was small. My main complaint was that there were large windows in the tiny living room area of the 1-bedroom suite I had that were not as secure as I would have liked. I once left the room without the card key and was not pleased to find my 9-year old had figured out you could open the window by just applying pressure to slide the window open.Other than the small room for the not-so-small price, the resort was very nice. There were many activities for children.The strong point of the resort is it's beach. It's very lovely with very calm, user-friendly ocean.We paid $160 for a week-day rate. The other Tradewind resorts are very close and were less expensive. My advice would be to save your money and stay at at one of the lesser-priced Tradewind resorts.Also, as we were leaving Friday morning, an unbelievable number of people arrived at the popular resort. It was too crowded by 10:00 am when we left. It would not have been enjoyable to be at the resort at full occupancy. Definitely try to go there when occupancy is low.

Top Local Tips for St. Pete Beach

From the Tampa airport Use Studio Sedan Services as your to-from limousine shuttle from the Tampa airport. Much is within walking distance and there's a trolley you can ride all day if you want to venture further out. Who needs to with that beach?

A Great stay My experience at the Island Grand Beach Resort was exceptional. From the moment of arrival the service was beyond excellent. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The food in the restaurants(that I went to) was wonderful and the service within the restaurant was excellent. The pools are very clean and attended to. I enjoyed my full week at this resort.

Buy a week pass (or a daily unliimited) We are Nyers. so we rely on public transportation a lot. We bought the daily unlimited passes (3.50) each...and used it to go all over St Pete including the Dail Musuem. Be prepared for the trolley/bus to be off the schedule a bit, but definitely use it if you plan on sightseeing...:)
