WARNING: This IS NOT an smoke-free facility

WARNING: This is NOT a “Smoke-Free” hotel, it is a “dirty air hotel”. They only say smoke-free because in Florida all buildings now suppose to be smoke-free; however, this hotel allows guests to smoke in any balcony, around the swimming pool, at the beach bar and around the building. Moreover, there is not a single sign to inform people that the building is smoke-free (except in the elevator), so people smoke inside the rooms too. Not to mention the hotel personnel smoke by the door (nice greeting to your guests!). And the bar by the beach is also for smokers, so you won’t be able to a drink without dirty smokers polluting the air around you.
The biggest issue is that they are deceiving people into believing that it is smoke-free and people concerned about tobacco will fall into the trap an there is no chance you will get a refund. Talk about false marketing! The only good thing it that it is on the beach but you will not be able to enjoy with so many dirty smokers around.

During the only night we stayed at the Grand Plaza, we had unbelievable noise outside our door all night (doors were hollow), pot smokers in the maids closet just outside the door, only 1 elevator worked, and the entire hotel smelled like rotten fish. But the worst came after we left when we discovered from our credit card company that someone had stolen our credit card number and used it many times the day after we checked into the hotel. On one of the fraudulent charges, the crook was testing whether he could use the card for more charges and made the mistake of putting my home address in the on-line order. And of course, the only place the credit card was used where the vendor had my home address was the Grand Plaza Hotel. They make an imprint of your card to go along with the guest registration, unlike most modern hotels who swipe the card and their computers only reveal the last 4 digits to the front desk personnel.

I also believe that someone at the hotel is posting glowing comments about the hotel. When I read them, I get really angry. It is a bad hotel and has dishonest front desk staff and the general manager is into total denial.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Grand Plaza Beachfront Resort Hotel

A Little Dated, but

from nitzie
We (2 adults and 2 children) just came back from this hotel and I have to agree with the other reviews concerning the housekeeping. It's not that the rooms were filthy but the housekeeping was very inconsistent. Vacuuming was haphazard at best and the sinks and counters weren't always cleaned as well as they could be. Two days there were no coffee packets left in our room and one day there were no cups left. One time we had to call down to the front desk because there was no toilet paper in our room and once we returned at 5 PM to find our room had not been cleaned.
The girl told us she couldn't get into our room because she didn't have a key (???). We had to go to the beach until our room was done.
Having said this, I would still recommend this hotel, especially for families.
Even though we were there at the height of spring break there were no loud drunken kids roaming the halls or public areas. It was mostly families with children. The restaurants and staff were great and the Concierge (I think his name was Bill, was indispensible). In fact, even the housekeeping staff was very friendly, if not competent. The pool was clean, though a little small, and never crowded, but that didn't matter because we went there for the beach. The Gulf water was warm and the beach was clean, with lots of shells. The beachside bar, Bahama Mama's, had good food and friendly people. Most evenings there was live music (usually a single guitar player singing tropical songs).
The hotel itself looks like something out of the 70's but that's OK with me. Modern isn't necessarily better (although I was told the hotel will soon be undergoing a major renovation). Because of its circular shape almost all the rooms have a great view of the Gulf. We were in Room 601 and it looked north along the coastline. I think the rooms with the worst view would be 02 - 06, but don't quote me. All the rooms have balconies with chairs and the view is incredible. It's where we had our morning coffee and late afternoon cocktails.
If you can live with the less than perfect housekeeping, I think you will really enjoy your stay at this Holiday Inn.

Location Great...Amenities Great...Housekeeping...Not So Great

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family spent March Break staying in the one bedroom suite. First the good stuff......location is perfect! Right on the beach, near good quality restaurants and easy access off I-275. The room was well appointed and exceeded our expectations as far as size with a nice couch/lounger/table and 4 chairs in one room and two beds in the second. The pool, although small, was well maintained and had an adequate number of loungers. The beach location was picture perfect and was great to just watch from the two gulf view balconies. Entertainment was provided daily and the staff was generally friendly.
The bad news.....housekeeping was so inconsistent. Often, they would not vaccum the carpets, provide enough towels or even wipe down the coffee tables. It seemed like they just did the bare minimum and moved on to the next room. It was clearly not up to standard.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel if the little stuff does not bother you. It mattered not to me that some dirt was on the carpet or the kitchen counter was not sparkling......heck......that is how we live most of the time. What did matter is that our family had a well-appointed suite, at a reasonable price, in a great location on the beach at St. Pete's!

I am going to make this short and simple. The room was ok, a bit dated, the beds were very hard and uncomfortable. The idea of having the two king beds is great but it leaves little room. Our biggest problem was the restaurant, the service was lousy and the waitress very rude and to top it off they add a 15% gratuity to your check whether you like it or not - I don't think so you have to earn your tip and what do you do when you have poor service you still have to pay the tab. Speaking of the tab get this breakfast buffet 4 adults 2 kids $82.00!!!! Adult meals were supposed to be $11 and the kids free-not so. We went round and round with the rude waitress trying to get her to explain and she could not even explain it. We paid the tab and went directly to the hotel manager to complain he listened and said the food service manager would contact me on the matter, she left a message but never did get back w/ us and I never could get back with the manager. All in all I would say forget this place and look elsewhere.

Great place

After booking this hotel for 6 days and then reading all the previous reviews, I was a little leary, however....what a great place. I am glad I did not read the reviews prior to booking. The hotel is an older Holiday Inn but it is beautiful with a great beach, clean room, a nice restuarant at the top that revolves and a great beach bar. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, the wait staff was also friendly. This was our first time at St Pete Beach and it was great. There were 5 weddings on the beach with the receptions held in different banquet rooms and all looked lovely. We will definately be back.

Housekeeping please

Quite possibly the worst holiday inn I've stayed at in a long time. Though the front desk staff was pleasant, timely, and very courteous, the cleaning staff was without a doubt in need of better supervision. When I first got to the room, it was in need of vacuuming and the the area near the sink over the fridge had not been cleaned. There was mold in the air conditioner unit (inside the room). Disgusting! There was white thread of approximately 2 foot long and about 12 strands that was never picked up. Needless to say I shall be trying a different hotel next time.

bad reviews are true

We are in our 50's and travel 4 times a year and have done so for over 10 years. We checked in Sept. 30 for what was to be a four night stay. Our gulf coast view room was not ready at 1 PM which is not unusual. We decided to upgrade to an ocean front rm and one was ready right then at $140. The rooms are very dated and you do not feel like you are close to paradise which is right outside the balcony. Dark woods, no pastels certainly not a tropical theme but an old, dated theme. The AC did not work, the glasses were visably filthy, there was spilled coffe grinds on the tray, the floor needed vacuumed, one of the two beds did not have a mattress cover, the sheets had what appeared to be eye lash makeup on them. We called the front desk and house keeping came and took care of everything and the fix it guy fixed the AC. We went down to Bahama MaMas which is the the pool bar. Susie from Tailand makes some really great drinks! She was delightful. The grouper nuggets are awesome. The pool is small and was a little cloudy. Lots of kids. We went to dinner upstairs at Spinners the roof top revolving restaurant. The food has always been good here and the service very good. We went back to our room only to find that the AC was not working again. I had had enough. I called the front desk and they did not have anyone on duty to fix it and said they would move us or give us a discount on this room. We decided to pack our stuff and get out of this place. We were not charged for the stay which was from 1PM to 10PM. We went next door to the Sirata Hotel which is the nicest propety of all of the beach hotels in all of St. Pete and all beaches north of St. Pete. We have been to many. See my review for the Sirata hotel. We got a beach front room in Building 2 for $109 per night. The Sirata saved our vacation. It is one gorgeous, clean, updated, tropical propety with great staffing, 3 pools and 2 whirlpols. If you are going to stay at this Holiday Inn, call the Sirata, you will be glad you did.

Needs updating

Went to St Pete's as part of our Florida trip, unfortunately, it was when Frances was about to visit. The staff were excellent, very friendly and polite. We arrived early, about mid- day, and found that our room was ready. However, on entering our room, it was very large, but also very outdated. The fridge seemed as if it was 20 years old, and housekeeping was not very good, as there was lots of dust, and hair etc. in the bathroom, and I did peak under one of the beds, and there was an empty beer can there from the time we booked in, until we checked out two days later. The balcony was facing the bay, but when you went out on it, it smelt of urine! Another problem was that neither of our phones worked. My sister had called us on serveral occasions, and in the end insisted on a written essage being taken to the room. Even though maintenence came, they were unable to get them working. Great public areas, and beach.

Holiday Inn was Great!!!

from sunshine4me
Have been to St. Pete Beach for the last 5 years. Have stayed at different hotels and not really pleased with anyone of them enough to stay a second time. Decided to try the Holiday Inn, and was very pleasantly surprised. First, our vacation was scheduled three different times because of the hurricanes that kept hitting Florida. Each time that we called to reschedule for the following week there was never a problem, we even got to know the staff over the phone. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. After finally arriving in St. Pete on Sept.22-30, everyone at the hotel was very friendly and said that they were glad that we were able to finally come. Our view was spectacular. We could see the bay and the gulf from our balcany and the room was CLEAN. When hurricane Jeanne came, the desk called to inform us that if the power went out, the service elevator, the lounge and the restaurant would be on generated power and that if we needed anything at all to let them know. The hurricane was not part of the vacation plans, but it was an experince that we will never forget. The weather was beautiful everyday of our trip except for the one day that Jeanne decided to visit. As for staying at the Holiday Inn again, you bet we will!!

Not as good as it used to be

from wetzcr
Not the hotel it used to be. My husband and I had remained faithful to this hotel since we stayed there on our honeymoon 5 years ago and had a wonderful experience. We are fortunate to return to the area a couple of times a year but won't stay at this hotel again. The rooms are not clean, staff not as helpful or accomodating when issues arise and on a couple of occasions have had problems with Palmetto bugs. Would no longer recommend it- there are other hotels in that area with just as good of a view.

Disgusting and rude!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our experience here was so horrible that we only stayed here for about 10 minutes. The room was dirty and totally outdated. It smelled like urine and mold in the hallways. The bathroom was filthy. The customer service was disgraceful. I simply asked to be directed to my room and was told by an employee "room 200 is on the second floor DUHHH! Do not stay here if you want to enjoy your vacation. It is the worst hotel I have ever been in.

Shuttle Avoid taxis if you must travel. Explore the shuttles along the road that takes you to downtown St. Petersburg.
